Prologue: Sept 15, 2012

Flew United from Austin to Bakersfield Airport, de-boxed & assembled the bikes at

the luggage carousel…

… rode from Bakersfield Airport… to dinner at Milt’s coffee shop… and on to hotel.

Dinner detour @ Milts Coffee Shop. (missed Hodel’s –closed @ 9:00pm)

Road closed due to RR track work. (walked bikes thru)

Day 1a : Sept 16, 2012 Bakersfield to Ridgecrest

Ascended beautiful Kern River Canyon, past Lake Isabella, up over Walker Pass, descending to the desert floor, past China Lake Naval Base (cameras NOT welcome) and into Ridgecrest, stopping 25mi short of our intended destination hotel in Pioneer Point (due to contact failure… later found up for sale). Ate dinner at Kristy’s.

Buzzed by F-16 flying low along the valley.

Day 2a : Sept 17, 2012 Ridgecrest to Furnace Creek

Left Ridgecrest before sunrise (@ rush hour) passing many chemical plants… up a long grade, descending a

windy fast grade to Panamint Valley Road (long, straight and ROUGH), then met “Rich” ascending a brutal climb over Towne Pass and down into Death

Day 2b : Sept 17, 2012 Ridgecrest to Furnace Creek

DEATH VALLEY

This climb reminded me of the Col du Tourmalet… ~1200 ft less climbing, but in the desert! Avg. 8-9% with no breaks!

Day 3a : Sept 18, 2012

Furnace Creek to Las Vegas (Circus-Circus) Left Furnace Creek ascending, and then descending to Amargosa Opera House & Hotel where

we loaded up with ICE water. Then ascended a low grade climb before descending into Pahrump where we feasted on massive cheap calories. Then the long ascent with wind mostly in our

faces, getting to the top of Mountain Springs Summit and descending at 30-40mph in the dark to Las Vegas.
