Visit the Teague website to download our Parent Handbook @ www.TE.centralunified.org click on~~PARENT RESOURCES. PFC – Parent Faculty Club is a great way to get involved at Teague. Each fall the PFC votes on annual goals and how they plan to achieve their goals. The PFC is a parent lead and run organization that supports the students at Teague through fundraising coordinating, activities coordinating and other supportive endeavors that benefit the students. Please look for PFC information and events on the Teague Website Calendar and plan to attend the PFC meeting held monthly (TBA). SSC – School Site Council sets four regularly scheduled meetings a year at Teague. During these quarterly meetings the School Site Council reviews Teague’s Single Plan for Student Achievement to ensure we are making progress towards our goals. This committee also makes recommendations for the categorical budgets and works with the Principal in prioritizing expenditures. Elections are held each fall for vacant positions. Community members not elected to the council are welcome to attend meetings and give their input as well. Agendas are available for review 72 hours prior to the meeting. ELAC – The English Learner Advisory Committee is composed of teachers and parents of English Learner students at Teague. Parents and teachers elected to serve on the committee give their input and suggestions for schoolwide goals and spending to be included in the Single Plan for Student Achievement. Agendas are available for review 72 hours prior to the meeting. Principal’s Coffee Chat – The first Thursday of every month, the Principal of Teague will host an open coffee chat, where parents and community members are invited to the cafeteria to have a cup of coffee with principal and chat about thoughts, suggestions, concerns or anything else involving Teague and the Highway City Community. Teague Knight PRIDE

At Teague Elementary, all students are expected to show PRIDE in their school at all times. This chart was designed by students for students of what behaviors they expect of each other while at school. Every student is expected to be able to name what PRIDE stands for; be Proud, show Respect, have Integrity, be Determined and show Empathy. Posters and signs are displayed throughout campus highlighting those expectations. Students who exhibit these behaviors will be provided with PRIDE incentives and awards.

Student Expectations

Dress Code

Refer to the District Handbook

Technology Policy Only CUSD approved devices are permitted on campus. All cell phones must be kept in backpacks and turned off. The device (cell phones, electronic video games, etc.) will be taken from the student on the 1st offense and the student may pick up the device after school. On the 2nd offense, the parent must come to the school to pick up the device. The 3rd offense will result in a parent/administration/student conference. Students in grades 1-6 will receive a chromebook for school use. Kindergarten will have access to tablets for school use. An Acceptable use policy will be require a parent/guardian signature and kept on file in the office. Students who violate the acceptable use policy will be subject to disciplinary action and potential loss of technology use while at school. Parents who wish to check out a tablet for home use will need to schedule an appointment with the office.

Homework Policy Homework is an integral part of the educational success impacting the student’s growth in academic skills and their development of good study habits. Homework extends the classroom learning by providing opportunities for reinforcement and practice cultivating self-discipline and self-confidence. Homework also provides a mode of communication and partnership between home and school, and gives parents an opportunity to see what their student is doing at school. Generally, homework should be 10 minutes per grade per evening, not to exceed 45 minutes. For example, students in first grade should spend about 10 minutes per evening on homework, students in thirst grade may spend 30 minutes and students in sixth grade should spend no more than 45 minutes per evening. If your child is spending an excessive amount of time on homework every evening, you are encouraged to speak with your child’s teacher. These homework times are in addition to the required reading your child should do each evening.

Attendance Policy

School attendance and achievement go hand-in-hand. We ask that you make every effort possible to see that your child attend school regularly. The day your child is absent, notify the school of the reason for the absence. No response within 72 hours of the absence will result in an unexcused absence, which is a truancy. Please leave a message on the 24 hour attendance line ~ 559-276-5260. Information required:

1) Student’s name 2) Name of person calling 3) Date of absence 4) Reason for absence

Verification must be made each day that the student is absent. No contact from the parent regarding their child’s absence will be documented as an unexcused absence.

Teague will make a courtesy call to the house to verify the absence using our automated system. If the absence has not been verified in 3 days, the absence becomes unexcused and parents can

either receive a S.A.R.B. (Student Attendance Review Board) warning letter or a S.A.R.B. classification of truancy letter. Students with excessive absences excused or unexcused will also be referred to the Student Attendance Review Board process.

Students who are absent 5 consecutive days or more will be dropped if parent/guardian does not contact the school with a reason for the absences; the attendance clerk will make a courtesy call to all numbers listed on the Emergency Card. The student will be dropped if no contact can be made. If a student returns after being dropped, the parent/guardian will have to re-register the student. The student may not get the same teacher or may be sent to one of our overflow schools if Teague does not have space.

12

EARLY PICK-UPS : If a child is being picked up early from school parents must check their child out of school with the attendance office. All early checkouts are monitored by the school. Students checked out of school early 3 or more times without a verified medical note will result in a parent/administration conference and may initiate the S.A.R.B. process. EXCUSED ABSENCES: The state of California declares three reasons why a child can be excused from attending school in the Education Code. They are: illness, medical/dental appointments, or funeral of an immediate family member. Ten or more excused absences in a year are considered excessive. After 10 excused absences, the school will then initiate the S.A.R.B. process. VERIFIED UNEXCUSED ABSENCE: When a parent calls the school and says the child did not attend school and the reason does not fit the excused absence definition, the child will receive a Verified Unexcused Absence. Verified means the parent made contact with the school. Unexcused means the parent’s reason does not count with the state Education Code. After 10 verified unexcused absences, the school will then initiate the S.A.R.B. process. Personal business, family emergency, car trouble, missed bus; oversleeping or other reasons not listed above will be documented as verified unexcused absence.

*A combination of excused absences and verified unexcused absences that equal up to 10 absences constitute a reason to begin the S.A.R.B. process.

UNEXCUSED ABSENCE: includes any reason not listed as excused and the school was not contacted regarding the child’s absence. Missing the bus, “waking up late”, or out of town without an Independent Study Contract, are some examples of unexcused absences. Unexcused absences are considered as truancy by California law. Three unexcused absences will initiate the S.A.R.B process.

TARDIES: Tardies do affect a child’s progress in class. In order for students to receive the maximum benefit in class, a student needs to be present in class by 8:30AM. If your child is late to school, he/she must report to the office to receive a pass before going to class. You should provide a note stating the reason he/she is late or you, the parent, may come to the office and provide the reason verbally as well.

Below are definitions of several types of tardies: Excused Tardy: Illness, medical/dental appointments or funeral of an immediate family member may be excused if the tardy has been verified by a parent/guardian by a note, a phone call, or if the student is accompanied by the parent to the office. The parent/guardian must verify the reason for the tardy within 72 hours or the tardy will be unexcused. Students who have an excessive amount of tardies due to illness may be subject to the S.A.R.B. Unexcused Tardy is any other reason given. Missed bus, car trouble, oversleeping or other reasons are not excused. Truant Tardy: If the student is over thirty minutes late when arriving at school, it is considered a partial absence. A total of three tardies over thirty minutes is equal to one day’s absence. Tardies will not be excused without parent verifications within 72 hours.

13

ATHLETICS

Sports and their seasons are as follows: Fall: Girls Volleyball (4th-6th), Football (5th-6th), Cross Country (3rd-6th) Winter: Wrestling (4th-6th ), Girls Basketball (4th-6th), Boys Basketball (4th-6th) Spring: Track (3rd-6th), Boys’ Baseball (4th-6th), Girls’ Softball (4th-6th)

Coaches will notify parents of the practice schedule prior to the beginning of the season. Students must sign the Teague Code of Conduct form Participation in elementary athletics is generally open to 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students that have not reached their 13th birthday prior to September 1st. Football is only open to 5th and 6th grade students and track and cross country are open to 3rd thru 6th grade students. Grade Point Average: Students are expected to maintain a 2.0 grade point average and adhere to district and site policies. Grade Point Average will follow CIF guidelines. If a student’s GPA drops below a 2.0 at any grading period, they will be placed on probation. If the student has two consecutive grading periods below 2.0, the student will be deemed ineligible. The grading period will be from Monday to Friday each week during the season. Grades are cumulative and not just work turned in that week. What does this mean to your child? If your child’s grades fall below a 2.0 within a two-week grading period during the season, they will be deemed ineligible for that week’s game. Once they raise their grades above a 2.0, they will become eligible to participate again. Discipline Issues: School administration, parent and coach are the only people allowed to keep a player from participating. Teachers cannot keep an athlete from participating unless a school administrator has approved the case. Any referral to the office may result in loss of game privileges; however, the athlete will still be required to participate in practices and attend the game (only if it is a home game). A student who receives any type of suspension will not be allowed to attend practice the days of the consequence and will result in loss of game privileges for the next scheduled game.

Teague Elementary PBIS

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Proactive approach to School-wide Discipline

Definition of Discipline: Unfortunately, “discipline” commonly is defined by procedures that focus on control with punishment consequences. This traditional discipline perspective is incomplete without attention to the development and support of pro-social behavior. Research suggests that punishment by itself is ineffective in achieving long-term suppression of problem behavior and enhancement of pro-social behavior. Therefore, a useful definition of discipline is “the steps or actions teachers, administrators, parents, and students follow to enhance student academic and social behavior success.” Proactive Approach to School-Wide Discipline Schools that implement school-wide systems of positive behavior support focus on taking a team-based system approach and teaching appropriate behavior to all students in the school. Instead of using a patchwork of individual behavioral management plans, schools are moving toward school-wide discipline systems that address the entire school, the classroom, areas outside the classroom (such as hallways, restrooms, cafeteria, offices, classrooms), and the individual students with challenging behavior, that result in a continuum of positive behavior support for all students. Schools that have been successful in building school-wide systems develop procedures to accomplish the following:

1. Behavioral Expectations are Defined: A small number of behavioral expectations are defined in positive, simple rules. Teague’s expectations are PRIDE – where every student can be Proud, show Respect, has Integrity, is Determined and shows Empathy.

2. Behavioral Expectations are Taught: The behavioral expectations are taught to all students on campus and are taught in real contexts.

3. Appropriate Behaviors are Acknowledged: Once appropriate behaviors have been defined and taught they need to be acknowledged on a regular basis.

4. Behavioral Errors are Corrected Proactively: When students violate behavioral expectations, clear procedures are needed for providing information to them that their behavior was unacceptable and for preventing that unacceptable behavior from resulting in inadvertent rewards.

5. Program Evaluations and Adaptations are Made by a Team: School-wide systems of behavior support involve on-going modification and adaptation.

6. Administrative Support and Involvement are Active: School-wide behavior support involves the active and on-going support and involvement of key administrators.

7. Individual Student Support Systems are Integrated with School-wide Discipline Systems: School-wide behavior support is a process for establishing a positive culture in school.

Student Support Programs

Students at Teague are provided with several programs to support their social and emotional development in addition to the academic programs and interventions. This year, Teague has the following support personnel in place for both students and teachers / staff;

Administration – Principal, Guidance Instructional Administrator Student Services – Behavior Intervention Counselor, Psychologist, County Youth Services, and

PRIDE Academy teacher Instructional Support – Instructional Coach

Page 16: Teague Elementary School 2017/2018 Parent & Student Handbook · Parent/Student Handbook – Please refer to your Parent/Student handbook for information regarding Teague’s policies

15

The Student Support Program at Teague is a newly defined program that is still in development as to how to best serve students with their variety of needs. Beginning in 2016/17, the team worked with students in the following manners and will continue to do so in 2017/18;

Check In Check Out - CICO Counseling Youth Services – CYS Alternative Student Placement – PRIDE classroom Small Group Therapy – Group sessions Connections – Teacher Student connections Student Discipline – Referrals System

The PBIS team (Positive Behavior Intervention System) meets weekly to review all student discipline data and issues from the previous week. The team will also coordinate with parents and teachers regarding reoccurring behaviors in the classroom or on the playground. Recommendations will be made as part of the intervention system. PBIS Incentives Students have the opportunity to earn Golden Knight Tickets for demonstrating PRIDE behaviors. The tickets are saved for the monthly student store where they can be redeemed for prizes and treats. Students can also earn a quarterly incentive with PRIDE Reward Party! At the end of each quarter, students who have no unexcused absences or more than three tardies, and have no minor or major behavioral referrals for the classroom, playground or bus will receive a reward. Some of the items may include a field trip, dance, movie or other activity. Each quarter students start over with a clean slate and are able to earn the reward again! Green and Gold Teague Spirit Fridays are always a fun way to show school spirit! The upper grade (4-6th) and primary grade (K-3) class with the most school spirit at the end of each quarter will receive a prize or treat for showing their Knight PRIDE!

Teague Elementary Parental Involvement Policy

The intent of this policy is to clearly define current practices in a more efficient, consistent, and effective manner, as well as generate new ways of strengthening the partnership between the parents, students,

community and Teague Elementary.

Home School Compact and Implementation Components:

Teague Elementary will take the following actions to involve parents in the development of the school site policy and home-school compact. Teague School and parents will agree to create and maintain a positive two-way communication

between school and home. Teague will develop and present the home-school compact and parental involvement policy to the

SSC. Public input and participation is welcomed in the development of these documents. A copy of the parent involvement policy will be sent home with each student at the beginning of

the school year. At the last SSC meeting of the year, the school parent involvement policy with be revisited and

updated with input from the SSC and any other community members. Parents will be informed of curriculum used at Teague during Back-to-School Night and parent

conferences. Parents will be informed of evaluative tests and procedures used at the school to assess the

academic progress of the students. Parents will be informed of the academic progress of students through the use of written forms
