Teaching understanding and application of tables
How to teach your children tables!
1. Find out which times table tables your child is learning.
2. Test them on the whole times table and find out which ones they find difficult.
Learning Multiplication TablesChildren need to understand what multiplication tables are
3 x 5 is displayed in stamps
2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 10
2 x 5 = 10
2 multiplied by 5
10 + 10 + 10 = 10 x 3 = 30
10 multiplied 3 times
multiplication as repeated addition

Make up a rap.• Say a ‘difficult’ fact in a funny voice – low, high, squeaky, a whisper.• Add interest by asking children to shout, whisper, croak answers

Nine’s Pattern - Step 1Subtract 1 from number you
are multiplying
9 x 3 = 2 9 x 7 = 6 9 x 8 = 7
Nine’s Pattern - Step 2Add a 2nd number that totals
nine with the 1st number
9 x 3 = 2 9 x 7 = 6 9 x 8 = 7

Use mnemonics to help remember the tricky tables
A robot needs 4 batteries. How many batteries do 3 robots need?
How many batteries do 4 robots need?...
What about 5 robots?
Answer word problems and apply to real life situations
Don’t forget division!
Rapid recall of tables
Knock! Knock!
Play ‘Knock, Knock’. The children work in pairs. Both knock their fists twice on the floor. One child puts out the same number of fingers as the multiplication table being practised. The other child puts out any number of fingers. The winner is the first to say the answer.(Make sure the children take it in turns to be the constant number)This can be played with both children choosing random numbers.
• Skipping games: chant the multiples of the times tables as you skip
• Pass the Bean Bag: stand opposite each other and ask a question, they have to answer and throw the beanbag back
• Hopscotch: Draw on playground and write different calculations in the squares
