1 TEACHING RESPONSIBILITIES
I have taught at Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia since July 1987. At that time I was a tutor. At undergraduate level, I teach core and elective courses. Most of the courses are related to structural analysis. I also teach design courses especially for steel and timber structures. Some of the analysis courses that I have taught are Applied Mechanic (SAA 2073), Strength of Materials (SAA 2122), Theory of Structures 1 (SAA 3213), and Structural Analysis (SAB 4223). Generally, each semester, two courses were taught, and there will be one section per each course. Number of student in my class is about 60 students. So far I have taught one elective course which is Finite Element Method (SAA 4254). Since, this is a numerical analysis course, normally the number of student is less than 40. The Head of Department has appointed me as a course coordinator. I was also appointed as Head of Analysis Panel. In addition to the lecturing, I also supervised laboratory classes (SAA 2052, SAA 3052 and SAA 3051). Most of the laboratory classes are related to the experimental works of structure models. The number of student per group is six. Besides that, I also involved in teaching for part-time student under School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE). The number of student per class are varies between 10 to 60. A detailed list of courses that I have taught can be seen in Appendix A. Every semester, I have to supervise between 3 to 5 students which are doing pre-thesis and thesis for undergraduate level. So far, I have supervised about 113 undergraduate students (see Appendix B).
Every semester I spent my time with the students to monitor the academic progress and personel affairs. The number ranging from 10 to 20 students (see Appendix C). Sometimes, few students which are not under my teaching class also come to my office to get discussion on technical advise and I entertained them immediately or ask them to come some other time if I am busy at that time.
I also teach post-graduate level on Finite Element Method (SAW 5253) and Bridge Engineering (MAB 1053) and also be a co-supervisor for Masters student project. Curently, I am supervising 5 PhD and one Master students (see Appendix D).
I obtained short term research grant from Research Management Centre (RMC) to develop physical models in teaching programme. Some of the models are shown in Appendix E.
I spend a lot of time in book writing and book translation. So far I have published 5 books, 3 translations and 4 adaptations. I have written 5 teaching modules (for the subject SAA 2212, SAA 3213, SAA 4214, SAM 4213 and SAA 4254). I have prepared 3 training notes on STAADPro and LUSAS softwares and 4 compilation of past year questions and solutions. In addition, I also prepared 2 modules for E-Learning. I have presented/published several papers in international and national levels. I also involved in writing some articles for “Ensiklopedia Sains & Teknologi”. Details of my publications are shown in Appendix F.
Almost every semester I was assigned to visit between 10 to 20 students which are doing training at various companies at the outside UTM campus. The main objective is to ensure that all the students should be exposed to the working environment and to make sure that the student capable to apply the theory that they learn at university to the site. Typical list of students which completed the training are shown in Appendix G.

-----------------------------------------My Teaching Portfolio--------------------------
I was appointed as a Committee of Book Panel. The Penerbit UTM has appointed me to give comment on engineering book which has been written by a lecturer from other faculty. I was appointed as a editor and pruff reader for 26 entries in Ensiklopedia Sains & Teknologi. The details are shown in Appendix H.
2 TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
I strongly believe that the method and style of teaching play an important rule to make our students understand. A good lecturer should be well-prepared. Course content and lecture notes should be developed with clear objectives in mind. Every time when I start teaching, I wish my student know the objectives of the lecture. The program outcomes should be clearly stated during lecture as this become the main agenda in OBE. The basic principle should be fully understood. Any theory mentioned during the lecture should be followed by examples. During the class, few minutes should be reserved for discussion. Feed back from student is important. Do not ever blame our student even the wrong answer is given by the student. The students should pay full attention to my lecture. The aim of my teaching is to make the student capable to relate the theories they learn from university to the real practice. To be an engineer is easy but my intention is to make my students to be a good engineer that can develop and expand the knowledge as the time and technology change.
I felt that a lecturer should never stop to earn knowledge and that by teaching we learns more and more. You should have a thorough knowledge of the subject area. You cannot teach well unless you know it well. The more you teach the more you get, and hence the more you expert. I intent to teach my student until they appreciate my teaching style and would to say that they have learned much in my class. I willing to teach my student until they fell that I am very close to them. I hope that I can be one of the best lecturer they have had.
I always allowed two ways communication during the lecture for Active Learning (one of the learning method). Students are free to ask me at any time, even they threw a silly question. If there is no question from the students, normally I asked them with simple question to make them think. Make your student to be active, not passive. Students should responsible for their learning. Every student has their own style of learning. I let them to choose which learning style is the best. But, I prefer if they can study in a group. Be patient when facing weak students.
Since I taught technical subjects, I believe that the students should be given work examples to strengthen the theory. The examples should reflect the real practice in order to make the subject interesting so that the students are more likely to learn it. Sometimes, students felt bored when attending technical class and when I realize it, I try to make them alert by giving some jokes intermittantly.
Infrastucture of learning such as facilities in the classroom should be conducive and receptive.
As one of the university staff, I will try my best to educate our student to gain the highest level of knowledge.
I believe that the students are the foundation of every university. Students are our main customer. No students means no lecturers and hence no university exist.

3 TEACHING METHODOLOGY
First of all, I prepare lecture planning, notes and students list. Before I go to the class, I ensure that all these things should be well prepared.
Since I teach very technical subject which involved a lot of calculations, step by step procedures are important. Therefore, I used white board marker during my lecture. Although this is an old method but I believe that it is an efective method of teaching for this subject. The theory they learn in the class will be strengthened by engineering software application, especially for topics which involved with tedious calculations that cannot handled by hand. The software is taught in hands-on session. In order to ensure the student can grap the knowledge, an assignment is given for homework. The objectives of each topics are given at the beginning of lecture.
I have prepared a good lecture notes for each analysis subject. Course outlines are also important and should be given to the students (see Appendix I). This is to ensure that the students can pay full attention during my lecture. Before I go for teaching, I have to go through my notes at glance. I should follow the lecture planning. I also published my notes in web page which is called E-learning. This will provide supplementary to the students if they willing to get extra understanding. I always upgrade my notes from time to time. At the end of the day, I can produce a book. Although, I ask my student to use my book as a main text book, I also encourage them to refer other books because I believe that each book has their own strength and creativity. Since, a lot of students used my book, I have been awarded “Buku Paling Laris” in 1998.
Attendance should be recorded so that the student aware that the attendance is compulsory. I believe that the attendance is very important. When the students missed a lecture, it is difficult to understand the next lecture. I strongly believe that the attendence is one of the important factor to the student learning performance. This become a reason that UTM put as one of the rule to sit for examination (see Appendix J).
Give pop-quiz to the student for immediate indicator of my teaching assesment. At least, I gave two tests to the student.
I used informal method of teaching. Create happy environment (jokes) and good relationship between me and the students. Make them a good friend. Use simple language for communication and emphasize the basics things. Make them fell a good sense of engineering by giving simple things.
Ask the students to form a study group. Let them discuss and express their ideas.I am one of the committee in preparing Teaching Document for ISO9002 : 2000.

4 DESCRIPTION OF COURSE MATERIALS (SYLLABI, HANDOUTS, ASSIGNMENT, EXAM, ETC)
For this topic, I like to take a subject called Structural Analysis (SAB 4223) as a sample for discussion. This is a core subject for the civil engineering course. The subject focuses on the analysis of two dimensional structures. The subject consists of the flexibility method, the stiffness method, introduction to finite element method and structural modelling using existing softwares (probably STAAD.Pro i.e Structural Analysis and Design). A complete notes including a guide for computer softwares are given to the students. A detailed course materials is shown is Appendix I. After following this subject, the students should capable to analyse any type of civil structures and this become important when come to the design stage. The performance of the student is assessed from assignment on theory and project using computer software. Appendix K shows a typical examples of assignment, test and exam papers. The assessment for my students are as follows:
1. Assignment 5%2. Project 1 (software application) 5%4. Tests (2 x 1 ½ hours) 40%5. Final exam 50%
5 EFFORTS TO IMPROVE TEACHING
I discussed the syllabi among collegues, Head of Panel and Head of Departments in a workshop. One of the workshop is called “Bengkel Penyelarasan dan Keberkesanan Pengajaran”. From this workshop we have coordinated analysis and design subjects so that the knowledge from the analysis subjects will have good continuity to the design subjects. From this workshop, we also check for pre-requisite items to ensure good flow of teaching.
I obtained short term research grant from Research Management Centre (RMC) to develop physical models in teaching programme. Some of the models are shown in Appendix E. I found that the use of model can increase the level of student understanding.
As I mentioned earlier, I always upgrade my notes. I gave more examples to the students. I have published 5 books and translated 3 books. These books have been used by many students.
I also attend related seminar and courses (refer to Appendix M). One of the important short course that I have attended was “Training of Computer Software – STAAD.Pro). Thus, it help me to strengthen the theory. In addition to that, I will be conducting a training on STAAD.Pro to my collegues. This help me a lot to familarize the use of STAAD.Pro in teaching programme to the students.
Sometimes, I arranged a site visit for my students to expose them to the real world. As a lecturer we should go for industrial training. This help us to relate between the theory and the real application. This training will also increase our teaching confidency.
6
-----------------------------------------My Teaching Portfolio--------------------------
I allowed discussion with students. Ask them personally of my teaching style. Let them give comments and behave gently when receive bad comments. Try to overcome it.
I am one of the committee to revise the curriculum and syllabi. I make sure that the syllabi can suit with the current environment and current needs.
I am one of the committee in preparing Teaching Document for ISO9002 : 2000. The total number of committee involved which related to teaching is more than 50 (Appendix L). I used e-PPP as a guideline to improve my teaching skill.
I was appointed to be one of the committee in organising a seminar called “Seminar Kejuruteraan Awam” which actually a compulsory subject to all undergraduate students. The aims of this seminar is to expose the student to the professional talk.
In order to increase my teaching skills, I have attended more than 70 courses, seminars and discussions which related to teaching (see Appendix M). I tried to implement the good things into my class.
I have attended Dr. Peter Seldin workshop on the Teaching Portfolio at UTM on 2nd
Sept 2002 and also the same workshop at Sofitel Hotel on 23 – 24 Dis 2002. This workshop helped me to produce a teaching portfolio and it was most helpful.
In future, I will try to take video while teaching a class to evalute myself.

SYNOPSIS
This course is designed to expose the students in analysing two-dimensional structures using a matrix operational method
and computer applications. The matrix operational method is also suitable to be programmed in computers as the
solutions adopt the matrix concept. The course consists of the flexibility method, the stiffness method, concept for solving
matrices, an introduction to finite element method and also structural modelling using existing software. The structures
include beams, trusses and frames. At the end of the course, students should be able to analyse the structures by using the
numerical methods and/or the existing computer software. The students should also have a problem solving skill on
problems of interest in Civil Engineering structures.

Solution:
Since the deflection and slope at A need to be determined, three unit load cases should be considered, i.e. vertical unit load at B (due to the existance of 10 kN load), vertical unit load at A (to determine vertical deflection at A) and moment unit at A (to determine slope at A). The three load cases are shown in Figure Q2(b), (c) and (d). End momens for member a and b are determined to setup the matrix [T].

Q1. Figure Q1 shows a frame structure subjected to point load of 80 kN, distributed
load of 25 kN/m and moment of 10 kNm. Support A is a roller while support C
is a fixed. Shows that the frame structure is statically indeterminate to the first
degree. Assuming the reaction at support A as a redundant and by using
flexibility method, determine the member end moments for the frame structure.
Use only two members AB and BC in your calculation. Assume EI is constant
for all members. Effect of axial forces can be ignored.

Q2. Figure Q2 shows a truss supported by a roller at node 1 and 2 and pin at node 3
and 4. The truss is subjected to a load of 50 kN at node 2. Modulus elasticity, E
and cross-sectional area, A, for all members are 210 kN/mm2 and 500 mm2,
respectively. By using the stiffness method,
(a) Determine the displacement at node 2.(23 marks)
(b) Determine the reaction at node 2.(5 marks)
(c) If node 4 is allowed to move horizontally 5 mm to the left, determine the force in member 4.

FIGURE Q2
Q3. Figure Q3 shows a frame which is supported by a roller at node 1 and fixed at
node 3. The frame carries a lateral load of 20 kN at node 2 and a concentrated
load of 40 kN on member 1. Flexural rigidity (EI) for each member of the frame
is shown in the figure. By using the stiffness method,
(a) determine the end moments of all members. Axial effect of the members is
neglected.
(30 marks)
(b) Propose and describe an alternative approach to reduce the horizontal sway
of the frame without changing the support conditions.
