Teaching notesCourse Overview

The Cosmic B1 course is ideal for learners who are interested in taking different international exams at B1 level. The great variety of task types makes it appropriate for successful preparation in a range of different exams. The structure of the book has an enjoyable and modern design that attracts teenage students and it is easy and simple to use for both teachers and students. The topics presented in the Students’ book are appealing to teenagers and directly related to their interests and hobbies. The material in presented in an a way which appeals to teenagers, including a graphic novel type comic strip featuring the Gadget Gang and fun revision activities in the Data Track sections. There are plenty of revision slots found in all components.



Students' Book format

There are 12 Units in the Students’ book with a revision section for each unit. Every unit is divided into 5 spreads, each one specially designed to promote a specific skill or language system (Grammar / Vocabulary).

The first page is specifically designed to introduce learners to the main topic vocabulary, in order to facilitate pre- reading discussion of the overall unit topic and to make the reading text more accessible to learners. It always starts with a blog to introduce and personalize the topic

The next two pages present learners with warm up activities and a reading text followed by a variety of different tasks, representing the task types found in most current English language exams. The final task is always a blog, featuring one of the Gadget Gang characters, which sets a context and poses a question for the students, providing them with the opportunity to use the language they have met so far to express thoughts, beliefs and personal opinions.

The page following the reading spread deals with extra Vocabulary input that reinforces and extends vocabulary work associated with the topic of the unit / reading text. Vocabulary items are grouped into recognizable lexical sets to make it easier for students to learn and retain new words.



The grammar page follows, with clear grammar tables and practice exercises. Students are invited to remember the rules by filing in simple tasks in the grammar table. A blog feature at the end once more allows for activation of vocabulary and grammar in a speaking task.

The Listening and Speaking spread is prefaced by a Gadget Gang episode. This provides extra, non-intensive listening for the students in a fun way, as well as recycling some of the key language.

Listening skills are on the fifth page of each unit. Listening tips help learners to acquire and build up listening strategies and become active and successful listeners by raising their awareness of what to anticipate, creating expectations or distinguishing between main information and details. Listening task types reflect those in a variety of different English language examinations

The speaking section builds on the language already taught and supports speaking skills with the Language Upload box, which gives learners the language they need to do the tasks. Speaking task types reflect those in a variety of different English language examinations

The last two pages of every unit, a double-page spread, focus on developing learners’ writing skills. This section activates language already learnt in the unit through the Memory Flash feature and helps learners to plan their writing through the Writing Plan feature. Connecting words are also focused on here. Writing task types reflect those in a variety of different English language



examinations. A Writing Bank section is found in the Workbook with models for the different writing types.

At the end of the book there is an extensive endmatter section including: o Use Your English sections for each unit for extra exam style practiceo Unit by unit word listo Grammar file which expands on the grammar boxes within the unit

ComponentsActive Teach: Fully interactive whiteboard software accompanies the course. The workbook is included in the software.Active Book: Each students’ book comes with a fully interactive e-book which allows students to practice on their own. However, correction is left to the teacher.

Cosmic B1 Workbook : The Workbook consists of 12 units that correspond thematically to the Students’ Book with a wealth of tasks that provide extensive consolidation; further practice and extension of the points covered in the Students’ Book. It focuses on all four skills and lends itself to homework or self-study. Every three units there is a revision section. The Workbook is accompanied by an audio CD for extra listening practice.

Cosmic B1 Companion: This is student-friendly with an appealing design. Every entry has both an English definition taken from Longman Dictionaries and the L1 equivalent. It also includes sample sentences or phrases illustrating the usage of the word in context to help learners understand the true meaning of the



item and a phonetic transcription is also provided. It recycles Vocabulary from the Students’ Book, unit by unit, including Cosmic Check sections. A Look at This box helps learners with easily confused words, collocations, idioms and expressions.

The Companion also includes a Grammar File with the grammar explained in Greek.

Cosmic B1 Grammar: In this component learners can find extensive grammar practice and a theory box to help them memorize rules or clarify points. Each unit is rounded up with a Get it Right section which focuses on common errors made by students at this level. There is a review section every two units. The majority of the tasks are exam based, familiarizing learners with different exam tasks. At the back of the book are three Vocabulary extension sections, intended to help students extend their knowledge in key areas.
