Digital literacyAccording to UNESCO’s ICT Competency Standards for Teachers (2008) to

live, learn, and work successfully in an increasingly complex, information-rich and knowledge-based society, students and teachers must utilize technology effectively. Within a sound educational setting, technology can enable students to become:

• Capable information technology users• Information seekers, analyzers, and evaluators• Problem solvers and decision makers• Creative and effective users of productivity tools• Communicators, collaborators, publishers, and producers• Informed, responsible, and contributing citizens

What’s the real reason? Poor investment in technology Living in a developing country Limited Internet access Slow speed connection Power problems Poor knowledge on technology use Teachers and students’ reluctancy Misconceptions about technology

Misconceptions about technology

Page 15: Teaching Languages in the 31st Century

Izquierdo, E (2013) Teaching languages in the XXI century: Going beyond our own borders

Some misconceptions are: Technology is the solution. Technology must be taught as a separate

subject. Technology must be the focus of the class. Technology must be “off” in class. The class must be teacher-centered. There is nothing we can do if we don’t have

Internet connection or a computer lab.

in the traditional way?
