Foreword

“The Language Menu” is an educational project from Learnwell Oy which provides teachers and students across the world FREE resources and ready-made exercises to be used in classes, along with the much needed tools to create original and personalized materials. Teachers seeking to use web-based activities in their classroom and students who seek material for independent study will find a common space on The Language Menu website. At the moment we offer 34 languages, which in the next few months will be increased to over 50. This will enable you to make bilingual material in more than 2244 language combinations. Our collection of online tools, currently numbering over 15 , is also expanding over the following months. The Language Menu has already been contacted by the Pools EU language project in Denmark for possible cooperation in EU-project in 2007. We already have funding support from:

Project Goals: The ultimate goal of project is to provide teachers from all over the world with free tools to create teaching material in an easier, more ac-cessible and more fun way. The Language Menu in collaboration with Inforteach Great Britain offers support and information on available courses for the Comenius program.

Description: The Language Menu project has now 17 online tools: Bingo, Board game, Categories, Crossword puzzle, Fill-in the blank, Flashcard, Framework, Label the pictures, Lines, Matching exercise, Multiple choice, Missing words, Split words, Scrambled sentences, True or false, Word spiral, Wordsearch. Teachers can complement their teaching with ready-to-print materials, custom-make vocabulary or grammar worksheets in 34 lan-guages with or without pictures or mixing and match these language options when making bilingual material ( 2244 language combinations). Objectives in 2007: Albanian, Bosnian, Catalan, Farsi, Indonesian, Korean, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maori, Montenegrin, Pashto, Slovak, Slovene, Somalian, Swahili, Thai, Ukrainian, Urdu and Uzbek will be added. We hope teachers seeking to use web-based activities in their classroom and students who seek material for independent study will find a common space on The Language Menu website.

Students Tools Learnwell Oy

The clip-art gallery contains more than 30 categories and over 2000 pictures to choose from for creating worksheets for the classroom. When creating materials, the clip-art gallery opens as a pop-up window. You can also go directly in the section “Clip-art” un-der “Material bank” to download pictures.

CHOOSE CATEGORY 1. Click on the drop-down

SELECT THE PICTURES 1. Click once on a picture in

order to select it (the item will be highlighted in green)

2. Click on “Save and close” to continue creat-ing the worksheet

3. Click on “Clear selected” if you wish to erase from the memory of the pro-gram the pictures you have previously chosen

4. To deselect only one picture, simply click on it

5. To browse through the whole category, click on “Next page” to see all the pictures

At the bottom of each website page you have the option of clicking on the “[Show key-board]” button, in order to open the keyboard for special characters. English (US), Ca-nadian, Russian, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Czech, Greek, Hebrew and Finnish keyboards are available at the moment.

PLAYING THE GAME: This game is played like BINGO, but pictures are used instead of numbers. Print out a page for each of your students. Each student will also need a dozen of small pins to mark their board. Someone (the teacher or a stu-dent) picks cards from the deck , and if a student has that picture on his board, he covers it . The winner is the first person to cover all pictures in a row (horizontal, vertical or diagonal). The winner calls out "Bingo!" PLAYING THE GAME: This type of exercise is very good for beginners as well as for advanced lev-els (can be used for suffix, prefix, phrasal verbs practice). Choose up to 15 words, then split each word so that it is separated from its suffix (for exam-ple). The tool allocates each suffix to a different word part, in such a way that all the words are mixed up. Students will then have to 'unjumble' by placing the correct suffix on each of the word parts. A fun and interesting activity for students of all levels.
