LINK http://www.brighthub.com/education/k-12/articles/79912.aspx What is it: Special education students often develop learned helplessness. Students displaying this tendency often begin to expect failure after not succeeding academically. Students may also expect someone to come to their aid or feel that nothing they do matters in terms of the outcome of an assignment. Students with learned helplessness often feel theres no connection between their own actions and achievement outcomes. Success or failure, in their eyes, is beyond their personal control.Past successes and how they were achieved, The factors within their control (getting extra help, studying, strategies to compensate for learning disabilities, etc.) New support structures or things they could try All the other strengths and areas of competence they have (keeping the failure in perspective) How mistakes are good, expected, and are opportunities from which to learn--not things to be avoided. Stress strategies and improvement rather than specific level of performance

Possible responses "I know you can do it" "I'll start it for you, then you can finish it" "What strategies have you already tried?" "Let's find a way you can do this yourself" "How could you get more help with this? Steps for helping in the classroom 1. Show how to find answers. (i.e key words, bold faced words) 2. Give opportunities to use different types of representation of work. 3. Reduce the number of problems or questions to the ones that highlight what is part of the lesson being taught. 4. Provide outlines of notes that are part fill in the blank. 5. Provide choices as to how to complete an assignment. This gives them an opportunity to feel in control
