Dear Teachers,

Thank you so much for being part of the “GoldiRocks” musical experience. We are so excited to bring this high-energy, fun-filled theatrical presentation to your students.

Please have a quick glance through this Teacher’s Resource Guide. Our goal is to give you some quick, easy suggestions to extend the experience of the show into the classroom. Whether you decide to do a major lesson plan or you just photocopy some colouring sheets, we hope that you will find this guide helpful.

This year many classes did not get to come see the show because the performances they wanted were sold out. If you would like to be among the first to find out about next year’s musical, please send us a note at: [email protected] and ask to be notified.

We would also like to make you aware of a program in which your students can re-ceive their own autographed copy of the GoldiRocks CD/CD Rom. The CDs are made available at a discounted price and the school receives a portion of the proceeds. You should receive more information about this program separately. If you do not, or you would like any more information, please do not hesitate to contact Sylvia Cal-laghan at 905-763-0852 ext.111 or send us an email at the address below.

Thank you again for coming to the show and for helping us to bring more music and theatre into the lives of your students. We would love to have any feedback you can offer about the program, this guide, or any other aspect of GoldiRocks. Give your feed-back and find out more about other great school programming at: educationarts.ca

Thank you!

Section 1:Colouring Pages & Activity Sheets

The following pages contain colouring pages for GoldiRocks. As with all the material in this guide, you may freely copy and distribute the pages if you are part of a school that has come to see our production of “GoldiRocks”. You may also like to print the colouring pages directly from the electronic/pdf version available at:judyanddavid.com/teachers

Colouring sheets are also available on the CD-ROM portion of the GoldiRocks CD (accessible on most computers).

Some suggestions...

Colouring sheets can be a great activity to accompany listening to the GoldiRocks CD. Every school that attends the theatrical show should have been supplied with at least one complimentary CD. Additional copies are available online at judyanddavid.com.

The colouring sheets can also be extended into other activities:

• SONG BOOK: Combine with printout of lyrics to make your own GoldiRocks song book

• STORY BOOK: Use the pictures to write and illustrate your own version of the story.

• PUPPET SHOW: Cut out the characters and mount them on cardboard or card stock, backed with popsicle sticks, tongue depressors, etc. to make cardboard puppets. Act out the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

• COLLAGE: Combine elements of the colouring sheet with other pictures from magazines, etc. to make a thematic collage and a basis for discussion. Themes could include:

Running Away: Goldi runs away when she doesn’t get what she wants. What dangers does she face? What are the possible consequences of running away? What better ways could she have solved her problems?

Emotions: Goldi shows many different emotions in this story. What are some of the emotions she shows? Why is she feeling that way? Do you sometimes feel that way? How do you show how you feel?

Section 2:More Opportunities for Learning

The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears can be used as a catalyst for many learning oppor-tunities – from existing fairy tale curricula to creative classroom activities and discussions. This section contains:

• General Discussion Ideas and Activities

• Science Activity: Rubber Band Guitars

• Nutrition Activity: Perfect Porridge Party

• The “Traditional” Story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The story can be used to read aloud and for purposes of comparison, etc.

• Compare and Contrast worksheet in which students use a Venn diagram to chart the similarities and differences between GoldiRocks and the traditional version

• Retell the Story worksheet in which students break the story up into a beginning, mid-dle, and end

• GoldiRocks Character Sketch worksheet

• GoldiRocks Theatre Review worksheet

• Song Lyrics which may be used to make your own GoldiRocks song book or to sing along with the CD. Lyrics are also available

by accessing the CD ROM portion of the GoldiRocks CD (works on most Mac and PC computers).

GoldiRocks • Discussion Ideas And Activities

Discussion Topic: The Moral of the Story Many stories have a moral, or a lesson that they are trying to teach. This is especially true of fairy tales. What types of lessons is the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears trying to teach us? Goldi thinks she can do anything she wants with no consequences. Is this true? Should Goldi go into the house of the Three Bears without their permission?

Discussion Topic: EmotionsGoldi shows many different emotions in this story: anger, fear, excitement, sorrow. Find the parts of the story where she feels these emotions and others. Would you feel the same way if you were her? Would you act the same way?

Discussion Topic: The MusicHow does GoldiRocks use music to help tell the story? (Adds excitement, emotion, conveys moods, etc.)

Activity: Put On a ShowHave your class put on their own version of GoldiRocks. If you have the GoldiRocks CD, you can use it to help, or you can do a play ‘from scratch’. Students can make simple masks from paper plates, markers, rulers, scissors, and sticky tape. You can also use the colouring sheets to make simple puppets and do a puppet show version of the play.

Activity: Mystery GuestWhisper the name of a character from the show to a child. The child then stands in front of the group and answers yes or no questions. The group tries to guess who s/he is from the questions.

Assignment / Activity: Theatre ReviewHave students write their own theatre reviews and report back to the class (see Theatre Review worksheet).

Assignment / Activity: Character SketchesHave students pick a character from the show and write a character sketch. What are some of the traits of this character? What does the character like and dislike? What does the character look like. Decorate the character sketch with a drawing or with a completed colouring sheet (see Character Sketch worksheet).

Physical Activity: Goldi Rock!Students stand in a circle. As the GoldiRocks music (or other music) plays, one leader goes in the middle and starts dancing and playing air guitar. She then taps a person on the shoulder and says “Goldi Rock!”. The new person must now come in the centre and the two of them must dance and play air guitar. The leader keeps choosing people to join the centre. When the leader taps someone on the shoulder and yells “Goldi STOP!”, then everyone must run back to their positions stand-ing in the circle. The last person to make it back is the new leader. For a variation, try it without recorded music, but with the people standing around the circle making music -- singing, clapping, etc.

GoldiRocks • Discussion Ideas And Activities(continued)

Activity and Discussion Topic: Dressing Up / Gender ExpressionIn the GoldiRocks show, one actor plays himself as a narrator, then he plays Mrs. Locks, then he plays Papa Bear. Dressing up as different characters and different gender roles can be fun. It can also help us see things from different perspectives, and maybe learn something about ourselves and others.

With a big bag of dressup clothes, have students dress up as characters that are all very different. How is each character like you? How is each character different from you? Why can dressing up in a way that isn’t expected make other people laugh? How would it make you feel to be laughed at for the way you want to dress, just because it’s not what people are expecting?

Science Activity: Rubber Band Guitars Materials:Small box (shoe box or facial tissue)Pencil or dowel rodRubber bands of various sizesDecorations (could include paper towel tube for guitar neck, paint, stickers, etc.)

Assemble guitars as shown (note: the illustration shows the rubber bands going under the cardboard tube, but it’s easiest to go around it).

What produces the sound? (The vibration of the strings).

What happens to the sound as you move the pencil?

How do the different sizes of rubber bands change the sound?

What happens when you shorten the string with your finger?

What happens when you make it longer?

Nutrition Activity: Perfect Porridge Party

“Dip your spoon, take a bite. It’s the porridge of your life.” – GoldiRocks

After turning her nose up at it, Goldi discovers she likes porridge, after all. What she doesn’t real-ize is that it’s also really good for you. Oatmeal is a great source of dietary fibre and helps lower bad cholesterol.

After checking food allergies and school policies, have a class Perfect Porridge Party with prizes for the most original ways to use oatmeal -- and prizes for the best crowd-pleasing recipes. You may want to limit it to ways of eating oatmeal as hot cereal (what favourite add-ins can you do... for example: raisins, cinnamon, pure maple syrup, various fresh fruits, dates, etc.). Encourage kids to try as many different kinds of oatmeal as possible. This would work particularly well after a cold morning recess.

Discuss the importance of fibre in a diet and the importance of good nutrition, in general. Stu-dents may make collages of healthy ‘any time’ foods and not-so-healthy ‘once-in-a-while’ foods.

A long time ago in a cottage on the edge of a great forest there dwelt a little girl by

the name of Golden Hair; she was an orphan and lived with her grandmother who loved her dearly. The grandmother was very old and so most of the house work was done by Golden Hair; but she was so young and strong she did not mind that a bit, for she had plenty of time to play and was merry the whole day long.

Although little Golden Hair lived far from other children she was never lonesome, for she had many friends and playmates in the wild crea-tures of the wood. The gentle, soft eyed deer would feed from her hand, and the wild birds would come at her musical call; for she knew their language and loved them well.

Golden Hair had never wandered far into the forest. But one day in the early autumn time, as she was gathering bright leaves and golden rod, she strayed farther than she knew and came upon a lonely, gray cabin under the mighty trees. A slab of wood beside the half open door told who lived within. It read:

“Papa Bear, Mamma Bear, and the Tiny Bear.”

A Story of Goldilocks and the Three BearsTRADITIONAL

The story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears was first printed in 1837 in a story by poet Robert Southey in his book The Doctor, although it is likely much older. The story has been told and retold by countless authors and in many adaptations. The version below was taken from a book by W. Denslow, published in 1903. There are many differences between this traditional story and Judy & David’s GoldiRocks. Most obvious is that the original story has nothing to do with a guitar! What other differences can you find? What similarities? Is this traditional story the same as the way you know the story? How is it the same or different?

“So this is where the jolly bears live!” said Golden Hair, as she knocked upon the door. “I want to meet them.”

No answer came to her knocking, so she pushed the door wide open and walked in.

It was a most disorderly house, but a bright fire burned on the hearth, over which hung a big, black kettle of bubbling soup, while on the table, near by, were three yellow bowls of dif-ferent sizes.

“A big bowl for Papa Bear, a medium sized bowl for Mamma Bear, and a little bowl for the Tiny Bear,” said Golden Hair.

“That soup smells good,” she went on to say, “but my! what an untidy house! I’ll put the place to rights while I am waiting for the bears to come home.”

So she went to work to sweep and dust and soon had the room in order. Then she went into the bed room and made up the three beds: the big one for Papa Bear, the medium sized one for Mamma Bear, and the little one for the Tiny Bear; she bustled and had everything as neat as a pin when in bounced the three jolly bears.

Traditional Story • Page 1

For a moment the bears stood speechless, with wide open eyes, staring at Golden Hair, who stood, like a ray of sunshine in the dusky room; then they burst into loud laughter and made her welcome to their home. When they saw how nice and clean it was they thanked her heart-ily and invited her to share their dinner, for the soup was now ready and they were all hungry. Golden Hair spent the rest of the day with the three jolly bears playing “hi spy” and many new games which the bears taught her.

When the afternoon sun was sinking in the west the little girl said she must be getting home, for her grandma would be anxious about her. The three bears would not let her go alone, so they all set off together through the twilight woods,--a merry company.

Golden Hair rode upon the broad back of Papa Bear, while Mamma Bear and Tiny walked gaily on either side. In this way, before night had fallen, they came clear of the wood and up to the home of Golden Hair.

To be sure the grandmother was much sur-prised to see this shaggy company with her little Golden Hair; but when she saw how jol-ly they all were and how handy they were in helping Golden Hair get the supper, she was delighted to have them stay, and gave them welcome. Papa Bear split the wood, brought it in, and built the fire; Mamma Bear got the tea kettle and filled it with water that was carried from the well by the Tiny Bear, and soon they were able to sit down to a good supper of hot

biscuit, wild honey and pumpkin pie, with tea for the elders and nice sweet milk for Golden Hair and the Tiny Bear.

The grandmother liked the three bears so well and the bears were so delighted with the com-forts of home that they all decided to live to-gether for the general good.

Papa Bear would do the chores and stand guard over the house at night; Mamma Bear would do the housework under the direction of Golden Hair, while the Tiny Bear would wait upon grandmother and run errands for the household.

And so it came about that the three bears moved their three bowls and their three beds to the home of

Golden Hair and her grandmother, the very next day; and from all accounts they were hap-py ever after. At any rate the fame of Golden Hair and the three bears spread far and wide through all the countryside, so that on holidays troops of children came to play with the four jolly friends.

The good natured bears were always anxious to please the children; they would get up games under the greenwood trees in the summer, and merry sports upon the icy lake or snowy hills in winter. They did their best to make life for all, one glad round of joy. Just how long they lived thus, no one seems to know; for it was a long, long time ago and nothing is left but a joyous memory of a happy golden time.
