General information about subjectsFIRST YEAR

This subject offers an overview of thedevelopment of Spanish Primaryeducation from 1838 (when it becamecompulsory) to the present day within aEuropean context. The programmeaddresses important educationalquestions, firstly, by examining the ideas,individuals, and institutions of the past todetermine their influence on their owntime; and, secondly, by bringing historicalknowledge and perspectives to bear oncurrent educational issues. EducationActs and school practices are alsoexamined in this subject.

General Didactics is a core educationsubject that addresses some of the essentialtheoretical-practical foundations of theprofessional development of prospectivePrimary Education teachers such as generalapproaches to didactics and teacheridentity construction.

In this subject some of the most important issues of today’ssociety that affect the family and school education areanalysed and critically appraised: social and educationalimpact of audiovisual languages, changes in gender relationsand intergenerational, multicultural and interculturaldiscrimination, as well as social inclusion and sustainabledevelopment.

This subject introduces the students to psycho-social and ethicalissues as well as to basic sociological concepts and processes,and social institutions that impinge on education.

This module aims at facilitating the development of thenecessary methodological strategies to implement thePhysical Education curriculum in Primary Education and usethem to teach content in other curricular areas. As the mainobjective of Physical Education at this stage is the acquisitionof long-life healthy habits, the students will receive input in avariety of motor skills activities and in how to carry them out ina motivating way. The module fosters critical analysis and theapplication of scientific knowledge to teaching practice in thearea of Physical Education.

In this subject, a constructivistorientation to the learning of science isadopted. Contents covered by thearea of Nature Sciences in the schoolcurriculum are analysed. Activitiesinclude student presentations, practicalactivities, simulation exercises, fieldworkvisits and debates.

The nature of science and scientificknowledge, new approaches in theteaching of sciences,misconceptions in the field ofexperimental sciences anddifficulties in the learning of schoolscience curricular content are someof the topics that are covered in thissubject.

In this subject, the student develops professional skills aimedat addressing the teaching-learning process of Mathematicsin Primary Education in a reflective and critical way. Morespecifically the learning objectives in this subject are:

1. acquire the basic mathematical notions aboutmeasurement that a Primary Education teacher shouldknow;

2. know about the treatment given to measure in thecurrent curriculum; and

3. get familiar with the main didactic proposals to teachdifferent magnitudes: length, surface, volume, amplitudeof angles, mass, time and monetary value.

This subject aims at providing studentswith a largely practical knowledge onhow to develop languagecommunicative competences inEnglish in Primary Education learners.

The focus of the subject is mainlypractical and students will be mainlyasked to design and evaluate learningactivities and materials.

This subject pursues to provide the learner with a comprehensive and thoroughknowledge of the essentials of planning and assessing in the foreign language (FL)class in the context of Primary Education. Classroom Management is also scrutinisedby analysing concepts such as monitoring, the quality of student behaviour, theorganisation of a class, the effect of establishing certain routines, of the learningenvironment, or of student engagement in class. Teacher development is alsoexplored. The focus of the subject is predominantly practice-orientated and studentswill be primarily asked to get involved with activities and materials.

405 CURRICULAR CONTENTS FOR THE PRIMARY FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASS

This subject aims to offer learners with a broad knowledge of different aspectsof foreign language (FL) development in the context of Primary Education, notcovered in subjects already taken by students, such as how to teachpronunciation, how to deal with phonics, the use of songs, the importance ofthe intercultural aspects or the analysis and design of learning materials in thefield of FL teaching, among others. The focus of the subject is essentiallypractical and students will be asked to design and evaluate learning activitiesand materials.
