Peteris Zarins

Peteris Zarins teaches private lessons and is currently an instructor of piano, piano pedagogy, and all levels of music history at The Royal Conservatory School and The Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy of The Glenn Gould School.

Peteris completed a Bachelor of Music degree (Performance),

at the University of Toronto and a Masters of Music at the University of Michigan. He also achieved the ARCT (Performer’s) and ARCT (Teacher’s) from The Royal Conservatory.

Mr. Zarins is a sought-after workshop clinician for Royal Conservatory Examinations, The Frederick Harris Music Co., Limited, the Piano Pedagogy Summit at The Conservatory, and teacher information sessions for The Music Development Program. He presented as a clinician at the MTNA/CFMTA Collaborative Conference in Toronto and at MTNA conferences in Denver and Austin.

Festivals at which Mr. Zarins has adjudicated include Kiwanis Music Festivals in Winnipeg and Windsor, Brantford Contemporary Showcase, the Brockville Lions

Festival, and numerous festivals across Ontario. He has done scholarship adjudication for The Conservatory and for ORMTA in Mississauga-Etobicoke, Halton-Peel, and Toronto Central.

Peteris Zarins has undertaken several tours of EasternCanada for Jeunesses Musicales. He has performed both as a soloist and as a collaborative artist; venues included Weill Auditorium in New York City, Chicago Symphony Hall, The Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, the Orford Center in Quebec, Glenn Gould Theatre, the AGO, Hamilton Art Gallery, and Hamilton Place. He has performed with soloists of the Riga, Stockholm, Vienna, Stuttgart, Houston, Santa Fe operas, the Canadian Opera Company, and Opera Atelier. Performance highlights include his participation in the Penderecki Tribute Concert at Massey Hall, and playing both solo and collaborative roles at The Latvian International Song and Dance Festivals in Toronto, Montreal, Cleveland, Chicago, and Indianapolis. Peteris is a member with flutist Jamie Thompson and saxophonist Bruce Redstone of the Kalais Trio, which has premiered works including Talivaldis Kenins’s Chamber Concerto and the song cycle Songs for Amanda.

Formerly the chief examiner, Training and Development, at The Conservatory, Peteris Zarins is currently the program specialist for The Music Development Program. He served as chair of the theory department at The Conservatory School, and is a long-standing member of Academic Council. Mr. Zarins is co-author of the three-volume music history series, Explorations, with Janet Lopinski and Joe Ringhofer.
