The History of Tea

The legend & history of tea• Discovered in 2737 BC by the Emperor of China (wink::wink)• Historically consumed for medicinal benefits• Later for religious reasons during the Zhou Dynasty • By the Han dynasty in 200 BC it was consumed for taste (only for the rich)• By 618 tea became common among the commoners • By 900 tea was encouraged to be grown and could be found in tea shops for

everyone to enjoy! • At this time, tea makes it way to Japan• Buddhists develop the Japanese Tea Ceremony

The History of Tea

• By 1600, tea made it to the British Royalty • The East India Company makes tea the most popular drink in England

• Afternoon tea time becomes the normal• The EIC brings tea to America• Because of the heavy taxes on tea, we throw the Boston Tea Party

• Many Americans make the switch to coffee

• By WWII, we can no longer get tea from Asia and switch to our ally, India.

• The south creates sweet tea.

Preparation of tea

Time the Steep• Different teas require different steep times. • If tea steeps too long it often becomes bitter. Leaf Expansion• All teas require room for the leaf to expand as it

steeps.• Make sure there is enough room for the leaf to

expand 3-5 times in size as it steeps.

Stop the Steeping• Once the tea has steeped for the proper amount

of time, separate the leaves from the liquid. • This stops the steeping process so the tea does

not oversteep and become bitter.
