Hello dear Sir or Madame, my name is Carl Leong and I am writing
this letter of application in hopes that you will consider accepting me
to computer science this coming fall.
On paper I am not really that interesting, I am a male in my early
twenties, and have thus far not done anything worth boasting about.
During my time in school I was an average student, did my
assignments without any fuzz most of the time, I did however excel in
one thing! That thing was: arguing. I have argued with my class over
politics, news and our most prominent interest, games more than I
can remember. I have collectively talked away hours of my time just
bantering with my teachers, just for fun!
I said that I was just an average student, and that might have to do
with me, myself, as person was not the type to just slack off after
school, on the contrary in fact! During my teenage years I did a lot of
things – I was a board member for a soberest organization under four
years’ time, I have been a martial arts and self-instructor for children
and teens for about the same time.
As for things outside non-profit work I have been fighting dragons,
robots and monsters across multiple galaxies and dimensions – I once
charmed a dragon to such a level that we became roommates, and I
have helped other people realize both these common dreams and their
own. By this I of course mean I am an avid table top role-player! This
does not mean that I have only limited myself to role-playing games
when it comes to playing games.
During my teens I have been up late nights playing table-top games
with friends, laughing, number-crunching and bonding. When it comes
to video-games some people might say that I have an addiction, I
would beg to differ, but I do not think I can do that wholeheartedly.
This of course means I have a seldom paralleled knowledge of games,
how they are built, work, tropes and their design, plus common flaws
– this is something that is beneficial to me since my dream job is
working with game design.
However I do not just play games in my free time, a lot of my time
goes to reading. I read fiction, non-fiction, basically anything that
catches my attention, and I read fast. So as long there is something
interesting I just keep absorbing information.
I do however have one flaw, a really big flaw, and that is that I have
hard time doing something wholeheartedly, otherwise known as fully
committing to assignments, people or things. This can make me
absolutely impossible to work with if I am in a bad move.
This is parts of me in a nutshell, I rather avoid mentioning some
things about me over a letter because I have a history of coming off as
condescending…
Take care and I hope I will hear from you soon, love Carl.
