The Lion’s Den Brimm Leads the Way Fall 2019 At the 2019 Sustainable Jersey for Schools awards ceremony in Atlantic City, Brimm Medical Arts High School won the Sustainability Champion Award in the high school category. The school displayed exemplary action in a number of categories and earned silver certification. Through efforts to recycle, reduce energy, conserve water, and create a greener society, Brimm achieved the highest number of points. Ms. Deborah Goodman and Principal Macrina accepted the award on behalf of Brimm. In addition, Brimm placed 1st out of 3,500 high school across the country based on other schools that are certified. The school was recognized at the district 2019 convocation on October 18. Thank you Ms. Goodman for your efforts to help Brimm lead the way! Brimm Leads the Way

Fall 2019

At the 2019 Sustainable Jersey for Schools awards ceremony in Atlantic City, Brimm Medical Arts High School won the Sustainability Champion Award in the high school category. The school displayed exemplary action in a number of categories and earned silver certification. Last summer, seniors Abigail Mercado-Rivera and Janiyah Taylor began an internship with Dr. Peter Gallie at the Rowan University, Bio-medical Engineering school. This past summer, juniors Johnson Le and Alexis Watson joined the internship. On October 17, the students presented their research project at the national conference for the Biomedical Engineering Society at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Over 5,000 scientists from across the United States and Canada attended the conference.

How have you changed through the years?: I matured and learned not to say everything on my mind. I’m more confident in myself too.

Chavarria. He always talks about what’s coming next and helps us prepare for the next step. He helps us grow and feel confident.

Ms. Elliott: I would love to meet the

late-great science-fiction author,

Octavia Butler. When I read her novel,

“Wildseed”, I fell in love with her

words and characters. She died in 2006.

Ms. Elliott: I have worked for the

Camden City School District for about

5 years.

What are your expectations for

students?

Ms. Elliott: My expectations are high

for my students because I believe in

their abilities, skills and talents. I want

them to excel in strengthening their

communication skills because it is their

After 25 years of service to the district and 22 years at Brimm Medical Arts High School, Dr. Lewis has retired. Dr. Lewis has

been part of the Brimm family since 1997 and has seen every graduating class since the first class graduated in 1998. Dr. Lewis

was instrumental with helping make the Coriell Institute for Medical Research science fair a success and he helped write the

curriculum for Anatomy and Physiology and Genetics. In addition to being the department chair, Dr. Lewis taught AP Biology,

Anatomy, Genetics and created the course Medical Terminology. Dr. Lewis plans to spend more time traveling oversees and

spending time with his family in Chicago. We wish him well in his retirement and hope to continue his legacy.

Rutgers University, The State University of New Jersey, is a public 4-year research university and the largest institution for higher education in New Jersey. Founded in 1766 and called Queens College, the university has expanded to include three regional campuses. The main campus, located in New Brunswick, NJ has five mini-campuses in New Brunswick and Piscataway. New Brunswick is accessible by car and NJ Transit.

The most popular majors include Psychology, Computer and Information Sciences, Biological Sciences, Economics, and Information Science.

Students can join more than 400 student clubs and organizations, including more than 80 fraternities and sororities. The New Brunswick campus offers many services including health services and first year seminars. In sports, Rutgers is part of the NCAA Division I and also offers club sports and intramural leagues. Scholarships and financial aid are offered.

Message from Guidance Seniors should create their college list, apply for financial aid and begin asking for recommendation letters. Consider applying to several colleges: in state schools, out of state schools, liberal arts colleges, HBCUs, and Camden County College. By winter break, complete a minimum of five college applications and your financial aid application.

On Saturday, November 16, join the Camden College Access Network for a Launch Party at the Kroc Center from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. There will be food, games, and prizes. There will also be a FAFSA information session, and more free workshops for parents and students. There is also an HBCU College Fair on Tuesday, November 19. More information will be communicated soon, but save the date.

December 4 is a district wide FAFSA night for all seniors in the district. A location will be announced shortly, but save the date.
