Ford Performance Vehicles is building a new limited edition model to celebrate a milestone
for the Falcon GT.The FPV GT 40th Anniversary
car commemorates 40 years of the Falcon GT legend, which stretches back to 1967 with the original XR Falcon GT.
Petrolheads like to believe the origi-nal GT was really just a hot rod built by Ford Australia staff. The legend is that a handful of management and staff stuck the Mustang 289ci V8 into the XR for fun - and never looked back.
Whatever the truth, I visited the Ford Museum at Geelong in April and Ford Australia is obviously very proud of its ‘downunder ’ heritage - especially the GTs, which feature prominently.
Only 200 GT 40th Anniver-sary models will be built, each with a unique build number badge and certif-icate of authenticity. Just 15 examples are set to cross the Tasman.
They will be fi nished in Silhouette Black with a striking gold over-body stripe kit, reminiscent of the classic GT stripe kit last seen on a locally pro-duced Ford model with the XC Falcon Cobra Hardtop in 1978.
Gold GT lower body stripes with a 40th Anniversary decal, accent colour treatment on the side skirt fl utes and rear spoiler pillars, and special GT-P 19-inch alloy wheels with gloss black accents complete the standout exterior package.
The interior of the anniversary model is equally distinctive, with FPV sports seats fi nished in a combination of leather and suede, featuring silver thread highlights and an embroidered GT logo. FPV fl oor mats with 40th Anniversary logo inlay match the exterior touches, while an iPod/MP3 audio player connection, which inte-grates with the FPV audio system will be fi tted as standard.
In addition to the unique 40th An-niversary features that transform the GT visually, FPV has also designed
a new suspension package to enhance the handling.
The new R-Spec handling pack incorporates an advanced level of suspension tune, allowing customers to fully exploit the potential of the GT 40th Anniversary. It will also feature a higher capacity oil cooler on automatic transmission models, which increases the effi ciency of the transmis-sion cooling system under the extreme conditions and temperatures often experienced on race tracks.
Manual and automatic transmissions are both six speed.
“We’re constantly monitoring the feedback of existing and potential FPV customers and a track pack version has been high on customer wish lists since the launch of the fi rst FPV GT in 2003,” said Prodrive AT Asia-Pacifi c managing director, Bryan Mears.
“The new R-Spec package will allow drivers of this unique limited edition model to extract the best possible performance out of their vehicle.”

Falcon - big on features, big on fuel economyBy Dean Taylor
With fuel prices on the rise it is tempting to
think small when it comes to cars - but is that what is best.
Refi nements in design mean bigger cars can be powered by smaller and more effi cient engines devel-oping more power.
It would be fair to say Australasia has a bit of a love affair with the six, be it straight or on two rows of three. Kiwis lap up the Aussie built sixes from Ford, Holden, Mitsubishi and Toyota - so what do you get.
Ford’s Falcon has been the company’s downunder main-stay long after the Americans dropped this as the ‘compact
sedan’ model in the 60’s.That was a shame really,
because in my mind the Fal-con got better over the next few years.
It’s only my opinion, but the Falcon then went off for most of the 80’s. Having said that there aren’t very many classic 80’s cars.
At least its heritage was continued in the early (and best looking) Mustangs.
I have to admit to some bias here - I own an XY Falcon and can see (or like to imagine) similarities to the mid to late 60’s Mustangs.
The early technology was always pretty simple - straight six, gearbox, driveshaft all in line to the back wheels.
Holden went to a V6 and the Japanese went front wheel drive - the Falcon

stayed the same.The latest BF XR6 I
drove from Fairview Motors features that confi guration. I was surprised to open the bonnet and be able to see around the engine - that doesn’t happen much these days.
It’s a 4 litre straight six, slightly down on the old 250ci (4.1 litre) that is in my Falcon, but about twice as powerful, with twice the torque and twice the economy.
The new six develops 190kW and 383Nm of torque. Fifteen years ago these were the V8 specs for FPV and HSV.
Power is slightly less than Holden’s high output 3.6 litre V6 - but the delivery of torque across the range, and through the fantastic six speed automatic gearbox, makes it a winning combi-nation.
Yet despite the power, the engine size and the size of the falcon, average economy is around 10 litres per 100km. There are fam-ily sized fours only doing that mileage.
The beauty of driving the XR6 was the ease which the engine handled itself - cruising in top at the speed limit at just 1600rpm, but leaping into life, and down through the gears, when a bit of extra go was needed.
Rear wheel drive is less common these days, and I haven’t been able to drive my XY for a while, so handling felt different and
a little unusual at fi rst. But once I got the feel of things, this proved to be a well bal-anced, big car.
I compare the experience to how we all fi rst felt driving front wheel drive Minis after growing up with Vauxhalls, Holdens and Zephyrs.
The XRs come with a bucket load of extras - in-cluding 17” alloy wheels, sports body kit with side skirts, front and rear bumper spoilers and full wing spoiler, Independent Rear Suspen-sion (IRS), unique XR leather steering wheel, very cool sounding 100 watt au-dio system, fog lights, trac-tion control (which I couldn’t
fi nd out how to turn off) and alloy pedal covers.
The car has a fantastic stance and a great range of new colours to enhance its look.
Ford has used a lot of technology to achieve its goal - engine management, gearbox, traction control, braking control, stability control - plus intelligent safe-ty systems - work together in a neat package.
The XR6 sits in the middle of an eight car lineup, which includes the base XT with Sport and Wagon variants, a turbo version giving 245kW, the XR8 with the Boss 260 V8 and two Fairmonts.

Fleet Image ‘Top Shop’
BEST SHOP: Fleet Image co-owners (from right) Kris Browne (speaking), Pam Browne, Chris McLeod, Glenn Tervit and Roy Browne receive their award from Collision Repair Association chairman Wayne Houghton and major sponsor Margaret Watterson of Nexus Insurance Brokers.
Fleet Image has been awarded top honour by peers in the in-dustry - taking out Overall Best
Shop award in the Collision Repair As-sociation’s inaugural industry awards.
The local fi rm was nominated in all four of the six main categories: Best Presented Shop; Outstanding Achievement Shop Upgrade, Environ-mental Awareness and Commitment to Training.
Co-owner Kris Browne says it is a huge honour for the team at Fleet Im-age to be recognised as being at the top of their game by peers in the in-dustry, and to be the inaugural winners of the major award.
The Collision Repair Association (CRA) represents 900 member busi-nesses of an estimated 1200
panelbeating shops
in New Zealand. The awards are designed to recog-
nise the very top achievers and are to be an annual event in conjunction with the CRA annual conference.
Mr Browne says Fleet Image made a huge investment in the future of their business building new premises, and it is great that that investment has been recognised.
He says Fleet Image is set up to meet all current, and future, compli-ance requirements in an increasingly more regulated industry.
Meeting, and exceeding, those re-quirements gives clients peace of mind, knowing their vehicle is as good as, or better than, new if it has been repaired at Fleet Image.
Mr Browne says the computerised chassis straightener plays a huge part in meeting those requirements, but high tech equipment, extensive staff training and environmentally friendly practices and procedures all play a part in bringing the best possible serv-ice to clients.
Fleet Image has always played a role in the CRA as well, and co-own-ers Mr Browne, his parents Roy and Pam Browne, Glenn Tervit and Chris McLeod were proud to stand in front of over 400 people at the conference and receive their award.
Mr Browne senior has served on the CRA at regional level, and now his son has taken over and is playing an im-portant role in the organisation of next
year ’s conference being held in Taupo.

My pride and joy...
ORIGINAL ‘Z’. Ken Brough with his 1971 Datsun 240Z - believed to be the fi rst in New Zealand - and (below) as it appeared on the cover of New Zealand November 1971 Motorman magazine.
As a school boy Ken Brough began a love affair with Datsuns
- initially when they brought out the SSS models, but especially when some Japanese boffi n decided to drop a straight six into a two door and call it the ‘Z’ car.
He wanted a Z - but they weren’t that easy to get hold of, despite them being regarded as the fi rst real mass produced, affordable sports car.
But he did indulge his Datsun passion - driving his mother ’s 1200 and then purchasing a 160J SSS. The Datsuns had a deserved reputation for being reliable and unbreakable - yet good performers. Unfortunately the unbreak-able didn’t apply to being rolled at
speed onto a strainer post (not by Mr Brough). The SSS was wrecked,
the driver was thrown clear, luckily as it turned out,
but she was still badly injured, and
Mr Brough was also lucky to be able to
walk away.The Datsun story
didn’t continue until 1996 when Mr Brough
was working at a client’s home in Hamilton. He was
restoring a 240Z and had just brought the shell home
from the paint shop. ‘It looked great.’The desire was rekindled and he
began searching - in the old-fashioned way by hunting through newspaper clas-sifi eds. He found his 240Z in Welling-ton in 1997, buying it over the phone and fl ying down to drive it home.
It transpired that the 1971 car be-longed to Datsun importers Nissan Mo-tor Distributors and was driven by them as a show vehicle for 18 months. It is also a English spec model - not available here when they started bringing them in. Over the years it was repainted red and now has a 280Z injected engine - but he also got the original 2.4litre with the car.
She gets driven weekly and goes out for Datsun Z Club runs occasionally.
The Z has a rebuilt front end, designed to improve handling. Long term plans are for a complete rebuild, with original engine and colour - and hopefully a set of the rare-as-hens-teeth Datsun competition wheels.
Mr Brough is also looking for a cleaner copy of the magazine that features FV 4253, and would like to know where that aerodrome is so he can recreate the cover shot - maybe for the car ’s 40th birthday.

If only we knew!!By Dean Taylor
Ken Brough’s 1971 Motorman maga-zine (see story page 8) reinforces that old saying - ‘If only we knew
then what we know now’.Like many magazines it features a new car
price list, so we know what was on the market and what we missed out on.
It’s an interesting mix - much like now - but with more emphasis on our English heritage.
Austin, Daimler, Hillman, Lotus, Jaguar, Morris, MG, Rover, Singer, Sunbeam, Tri-umph, Vauxhall and Wolseley outnumbered basically everything else - but the Japanese were making an impression, other Europeans were popular and the big Aussies from Chrysler, Ford and Holden represented great value for money.
Investment wise the best buy would have to be Ford’s XY Falcon 351GT. At $5408 it was similar in price to an Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina, BMW 2002, Chrysler Regal 770 V8, Citroën D20, Datsun 240Z, Fiat 124 1600cc Sports Coupe, Ford Mk IV Zodiac V6, Holden HQ Statesman, Rover 2000, Triumph 2.5PI and Vauxhall Viscount.
The Ultra White GTHO Phase III pic-tured below sold in Australia at auction for $A525,000 recently, and in March another fetched $A680,000.
I would suggest none of the other cars in the same price range would be worth that now. The GT was also considerably cheaper than most BMWs, all Jaguars, all Mercedes, all Porsche, Triumph Stags and all Volvos.
And the GT was the world’s fastest four-door saloon of its time.
Other affordable gems from 1971 include Holden’s GTR XU1 Torana ($3950 - top), Jaguar ’s huge 420G ($8510 - centre) and the fi rst production rotary - the NSU Ro80 ($7950 - bottom).
Only the Germans made it into double fi gures - the Porsche 911s ($13,000 to $18,000), BMW 2800 Coupes (around $13,000) and Mercedes Benz 280s ($11,000 to $12,200).
Cheapest car was the Honda N360 Scamp at just $1784 - $200 cheaper than the smallest Minis and a massive $700 cheaper than a Skoda S110L.
New profi le for motorcycle shopTrevor Hall Motorcycles is a
genuine example of a couple turning their hobby into their
business.Established 10 years ago, Trevor
and Suzy Hall (pictured) have grown the business to the stage where more room and a higher profi le site was warranted.
The shift from 493 to 503 Sloane Street is more signifi cant than it sounds - the new address on the corner of Sloane Street and Kihikihi Road has road frontage and higher visibility on the State Highway. It also provides a larger showroom and workshop area.
With the district well serviced by franchise motorcycle specialists, the Halls’ business fi ts into the niche market for British, European and American bike enthusiasts.
Mr Hall has over 30 years experi-ence with bikes and the couple belong to several classic motorcycle clubs, so he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the business. This is especially useful with the many com-pliance issues today and when helping owners with their own projects.
Services include import and export of bikes to order, parts and accesso-ries sales, custom builds, repair, serv-ice, engine rebuilds or re-powering, restoration and preparing vehicles for Warrant of Fitness and Low Volume Vehicle Certifi cation. Trevor Hall Motorcycles is in the latter stages of applying to be able to undertake WOF checks - another service that
will benefi t customers.Bikes on sale have ranged from a
veteran 1904 Peugeot to the latest offerings.
Custom bikes are a growing busi-ness, and Trevor Hall Motorcycles can offer clients one-off designs powered by S&S, Ultima or Revtech Harley Davidson type aftermarket engines.
They also have experience in work-ing on older technology, such as mag-netos and generators, to spark those vintage models back into life.
In fact high quality, full restorations
of classic bikes is a passion. To get that classic ‘just right’ they
undertake such jobs as custom making cables, refurbishing spoked wheels, repairing speedos and tachos and rec-reating classic paint styles, including hand painted pin stripes.
Their expert panelbeater and painter also undertakes custom work, including airbrush designs.
A new part of the business is ca-tering for newer riders restricted to 250cc bikes.
The Halls endorse safe riding, and believe it is important all riders
become experienced before handling the bigger type of machines they sell predominantly.
To cater for the less experienced rider, but still maintain their point of difference, the Halls have sourced the Keeway 250cc Cruiser, a smaller V-twin design bike that appeals to peo-ple wanting a more distinctive look.
They are also stocking scooters as people look to get that motorcycling experience, or simply a more conven-ient and economical way to travel.

Industry is in the bloodBeaurepaires For
Tyres Te Awamutu store manager Gary
O’Hanlon has a passion for the motor industry, a trait he believes couldn’t avoid given his family background.
And he works from the premesis on the corner of Alexandra and Mutu Streets which is part of Te Awamutu’s motoring history.
Growing up around hot rodding and motorsports, Mr O’Hanlon soon found himself racing go carts and speedway. The experience has helped him in the in-dustry, especially in terms of setting up vehicles to suit their owner ’s needs.
He soon found himself working in the motoring industry and credits employ-ers of six years, Mike and Jackie Cosgrove, with teach-ing him about business.
It is that combined knowl-edge and experience Mr O’Hanlon takes into the workplace everyday.
He says he genuinely enjoys going to work and helping people get the best from their vehicles, no matter what they drive.
Beaurepaires For Tyres Te Awamutu offers a number of specialist services.
They use the massive buy-ing power of a large organi-
sation to bring the best pric-es to customers, then make sure all the elements come together to make the vehicle perform as well as possible. To drive well vehicles need good tyres, properly bal-anced and aligned wheels and good suspension.
When these elements are right, vehicles handle better, stop more effi ciently and generally drive better.
Mr O’Hanlon says he and his staff have huge vehicle knowledge and their aim is to get a client’s vehicle right, or if the customer is not happy, do it until they are.
He says modern cars have
a set of criteria to work to, and generally these are the best guidelines.
However, with his knowl-edge he says it is possible to make the vehicle even better, or different to suit the owner.
This may include chang-ing the ride fi rmness, fi tting different tyres for different driving conditions, or simply fi tting a great set of mag wheels and tyres to improve the vehicle’s aesthetics.
Older or specialist ve-hicles, such as hot rods or race cars, are a challenge, but also make the job worthwhile.
Mr O’Hanlon says this is where experience and knowledge plays its part.
Beaurepaires For Tyres Te Awamutu are able to source specialist tyres for the more unusual vehicles, from the unusual vintage sizes to modern white walls, that give that classic or hot rod just the right look.
He says he and his staff are dedicated to treating all customer ’s vehicles as their own and taking pride their work.
Other services are the 24 hour callout and they will start vehicles with fl at batteries.

Driving with headlights on at all times is being promoted as a safety initiative, espe-
cially over winter when fog and poor daylight is an issue.
“Be safe, be seen” is the catch cry of a new campaign encouraging mo-torists to drive with their headlights on day and night, to be rolled out in the district over the next few months.
Road Safety co-ordinator Megan Jolly says that with winter months approaching it is extremely important that motorists can not only see the
road ahead but are also clearly vis-ible to other drivers.
“Driving with headlights on day and night will make you more visible. A recent snap survey in the Waipa district found 15% of drivers did not use their headlights at all when driving in fog. In the last fi ve years, there have been 75 crashes in the Waipa district where fog was a contributing factor. We have to change the mindset of drivers to stop this risky behaviour”
The survey also noted numbers of motorists driving with park lights only,
which is illegal. In the last few years, numbers of cars on the road with ex-tra lights fi tted have increased. How-ever, lights used in the wrong way, or that are too bright, or distracting can also be a hazard. Those with cars that have extra lights fi tted should en-sure they comply with legal require-ments. Information can be found at www.landtransport.govt.nz - see get-your-lights-right.
The ‘be safe, be seen’ campaign will include radio, newspaper and billboard advertising.

Courier team gets JazzyBy Dean Taylor
Recently Te Awamutu Courier staff were seen out-and-about
in Honda’s Jazz Sport thanks to Ingham Honda.
The initiative from Honda aims to get its new cars on the road - so loaning out the demo vehicles to local fi rms for a week gives people the chance to experience driving a new Honda, and gives the public the chance to see the cars on the road.
Our very cool black Honda Jazz Sport featured the 1.5litre VTEC engine with a more than respect-able 81kW of power and 143Nm of torque.
It comes with CVT trans-mission, but has the option of a seven speed mode which can also be used as a paddle operated manual.
Standard extras include 15” alloy wheels, sports bumpers, side skirts and rear spoiler.
The combination makes for a pretty agile and nifty car. It had get-up-and-go both around town and on the open road, cruising ef-fortlessly, but with plenty of power to pass.

The Jazz is also pretty roomy. The front driving position was fi ne for me, but I wouldn’t attempt getting in the back.
I actually enjoyed the car more in the seven speed mode, even using it as an automatic, as it felt more controlled and gave me engine braking and a better feel on the road - but in all facets this is a great car.
Most of the driving was undertaken by our sales team of Alan Price, Heather Andrew and Dori Courtney - so here’s their chance to be motoring journalists.
Alan PriceA visually appealing car with a sporty look.
Importantly for a tall person like me, heaps of leg and head room and just a real feel good car.
The Jazz has lots of power, a good stereo and is a hatch back that would be a welcome
addition to the Courier or my own fl eet.Heather Andrew
The Jazz is a spunky little car.I drove it over the Kaimais and was sur-
prised at its pickup on the hills and how safe it felt on the road for a smaller vehicle.
It has a great stereo sound as well, which is important to me.
A little winner.Dori Courtney
This is a nice looking car that is surpris-ingly roomy inside for what I thought was a compact model.
The Jazz has perfect manoeuvrability around town - and defi nitely turned a few heads.
It is very comfortable to drive and has just enough space for me to keep my sanity between me in the front and my kids in the back.
