CHAPTER 4 : Climate & TourismTHE WORLD CLIMATE CHANGE

Climate is determined by three (3) main factors

Latitude or distance from the Equator

The distribution of land and seaRelief

CHAPTER 4 : Climate & Tourism

As a traveler, we need accurate information on the climate of a destination

This is due to the many recreation types that are weather dependent. Like surfing, skiing, sunbathing etc.

It creates seasons/seasonality On a world scale, the importance of climate is shown in a

broad pattern of movement from colder, cloudier tourist generating countries to warmer, sunnier destinations.

COLD to WARMWARM to COLD

Determines the length of holiday season. Determine factors such as resorts development and operating

costs-sales of beverages and leisure equipment are affected by weather changes.

Seasonality also affect the profitability and employment in tourism industry.

CLASSIFYING CLIMATES

The best way is to look at distances on global scale and look at climate zones.

A way of recognizing tourism potential based on climate by dividing climate into 8 zones. (8 major climate zones)

By doing this, the weather can be investigated on the suitability of weather/temperature for tourism and plot it accordingly on tourism development chart.

CHAPTER 4 : Climate & Tourism

TOURISM IS RESPONDING TO CLIMATE CHANGE IN TWO (2) WAYS :-

MITIGATION of the effects of climate change by altering behaviour, through reducing the carbon footprint of travellers.

ADAPTATION where destinations develop strategies to cope with the realities of climate change as shown in BOX 4.1, Page 87.
