CAC SF29 / CAC SF29A Revised – April 2004 CAC SF29 / CAC SF29A SOLVENT-FREE ADHESIVE SYSTEM DESCRIPTION CAC SF29 / CAC SF29A is a solvent-free two component adhesive system consisting of a polyurethane based adhesive CAC SF29 and a polyester based additive CAC SF29A. APPLICATIONS CAC SF29 / CAC SF29A is suitable for the lamination of film-to-film, film-to-foil, film-to-metallized film, film-to-paper and other such structures. It offers excellent chemical and thermal resistance and good bond strengths. In the case of printed substrates or substrates that contain film additives, it is essential to ensure compatibility between the adhesive and substrates used. We recommend comprehensive laminate testing prior to commercial production. FDA STATUS CAC SF29 / CAC SF29A can be used to make laminates for food packaging in accordance with regulation 21 CFR 175.105 of the Food and Drug Administration, USA. SPECIFICATIONS CAC SF29 Isocyanate Component (NCO) CAC SF29A Hydroxyl Component (OH) Solids Content (%) 100 100 Viscosity (cP) 2,000 +/- 1,000 at 40ºC 3,500 +/- 1,250 at 25ºC Specific Gravity 1.15 1.1 Appearance transparent to dull, yellowish transparent to dull, clear to yellowish Mix Ratio 100 80 Note – (1) Viscosities Measured with a Brookfield Viscometer (2) 1 centipoise (cP) = 1 millipascal.second (mPa.s) MIXING AND DOSING The adhesive and additive must be mixed in the required ratio (100 parts by weight CAC SF29 to 80 parts by weight CAC SF29A) using a mixing and dosing unit. The adhesive and additive in the holding tanks of the mixing and dosing unit must be maintained at 40 – 45ºC to ensure that freshly mixed low viscosity adhesive is supplied to the multi-roll application system. In the event of a machine stop, the mixing and dosing unit should automatically stop mixing and supplying fresh adhesive. POT LIFE The viscosity profile of the mixed adhesive is shown in the table below: Time From Mixing (minutes) Approximate Viscosity of Mixed Adhesive at 40ºC (cP) 15 1,600 30 3,500 45 5,000 Note – (1) Viscosities Measured with a Brookfield Viscometer (2) 1 centipoise (cP) = 1 millipascal.second (mPa.s) Mixed adhesive that has not been consumed within 30 minutes from mixing should be discarded. PRE-TREATMENT OF FILMS All polyolefin films must be corona treated to 38 – 40 dynes per centimeter prior to lamination to obtain the minimum required surface wettability level. Care must be taken to ensure that the treated surface is used for bonding. ADHESIVE APPLICATION CAC SF29 / CAC SF29A is processed on solvent-free laminating machines using a multi roller application system. These machines are equipped with precise web tension control, which is required for processing adhesives with low initial tack. DEPOSIT WEIGHT It is very important to ensure that a sufficient quantity of adhesive is deposited and that the deposit weight is uniform and continuous at all times. Based on results obtained in our laboratory, we recommend a deposit

DEPOSIT WEIGHT It is very important to ensure that a sufficient quantity of adhesive is deposited and that the deposit weight is uniform and continuous at all times. Based on results obtained in our laboratory, we recommend a deposit

  • weight of 1 to 3 g / m for most unprinted or lightly printed substrates. Heavily printed and thicker substrates, including those required for special applications, may require higher adhesive deposits. CURING TIME Laminates can be processed for secondary lamination, rewinding, slitting etc. after 24 hours of the initial lamination. Optimal chemical and thermal resistance develops within 7 to 14 days. CLEANING All machine parts in contact with the mixed adhesive must be cleaned thoroughly before and after each production run. Solvents like Ethyl Acetate, Methyl Ethyl Ketone and Acetone can be used for cleaning purposes. It is imperative that the cleaning operation be carried out as soon as possible in order to avoid difficulties associated with progressive curing of the adhesive. STORAGE In the original unopened, undamaged containers, the adhesive and additive have a shelf life of at least 9 months. Materials in opened drums must be consumed as soon as possible (preferably within 24 hours). PACKAGING AND AVAILIBILITY CAC SF29 is available in 230 kg or 25 kg MS drums. CAC SF29A is available in 230 kg or 20 kg MS drums. The adhesive and additive are readily available from our factory or depot stocks. SAFETY INFORMATION This adhesive system contains diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and requires special care in handling. An important point to note is that the adhesive must be processed in a well-ventilated area. The vapor pressure of MDI at room temperature is very low and no significant amount of MDI vapor is likely to accumulate in the environment during lamination. However, when the adhesive is heated, the vapor pressure increases significantly and hence it is very important to ensure that lamination is carried out in a well-ventilated area in order to prevent the accumulation of MDI vapor in the environment. This can be done effectively by employing an efficient exhaust hood on the coating unit.

Caution The adhesive system mentioned in this leaflet has been thoroughly tested in our laboratories. Our comprehensive quality testing includes preparation of laminates employing a wide variety of constructions on our laminating machines. These laminates are also used to package a large number of products in order to check end use stability. However, it is important that converters evaluate the suitability of the adhesive on a pilot scale, not only for its compatibility with the film / coating / ink system used, but also for its resistance to the product to be packaged in the final laminate. All the suggestions given in this data sheet are provided without any guarantee as the actual conditions of handling and use are beyond our control. We strongly recommend that the converter determine the suitability of our adhesives and suggestions before adopting them on a commercial scale.
