Victoria Village P.S., 88 Sweeney Dr., North York, M4A 1T7, 416-397-2930, Principal: L. Miklasevics, Superintendent: Curtis Ennis, Trustee: Ken Lister Part 1 June’s Principal’s Message: Liga Miklasevics Victoria Village has had a productive year of learning! We are grateful for the active parent representation and leadership from each class on the school council. We began the 2016 year celebrating the incredible improvement in reading and mathematics scores and are looking forward to continued improvement. We had amazing student leadership in our EQAO Trick Club tutors. We had Principal’s visiting from Norway and Denmark. They loved our library and were incredibly impressed with the high level of learning in Kindergarten. They admired how seamlessly Science Technology, Engineering, Math and the Arts were integrated into our regular day. The Kindergarten team has created an outdoor learning space in the courtyard. A robin loved the space so much that it built a nest, laid eggs and nurtured its babies until they were ready to fly. Our Kindergarten students watched from the windows as these baby birds were learning to fly. The Eco Club continued to take care of the gardens in front of the school and in the courtyard and started a walking school bus. They have truly beautified our school and made it so much more welcoming as well as increased ecological awareness. The whole school took a trip to Young People’s Theatre to see Seussical. Our children love going to the theatre and again this year people commented on how well behaved and polite our children were. As a result, we had a talent assembly to showcase our own home grown talents. Our students excelled in Soccer and 3-Pitch tournaments. Thanks to parent donations and support of our fundraising, we have been able to purchase 5 IPads, projectors and speakers for the Kindergarten Team. Finally, we have had a collaborative staff who worked together to make Victoria Village the best it can be! Thanks to everyone for all of your hard work in making this such an awesome year! Staff Changes: We bid Farewell to Mrs. Pepaj, Ms. Kim, Ms. Fulton and Mrs. Burch Jones. We thank them for enriching our school with their talents. Wherever they go, they will make a difference and raise the learning bar. We extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Dumevski, Ms. Easton and Mrs. Stroud who are joining our Kindergarten team.

Room 101 Kindergartens Our chrysalids hatched and we let our beautiful butterflies fly free. As a final art project, inspired by Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar", we made our own painted tissue paper to create this "beautiful" story board in our Kindergarten classroom.

Room 205 Mrs. Burch Jones’ Gr. 3 Class In Grade 3, we've been learning all about Soils and Plants. In one lesson, we learned about chlorophyll and how it is used to give plants energy from sunlight in a process called "photosynthesis". It also is the same chemical that makes leaves green. We tested this by using some leaves and soil to do some "natural art" at the front of the school. No paintbrushes or pencil crayons needed - just some crushed leaves (we scrunched them up to colour in our leaves) and a patch of dry soil (rubbed on the paper to make the tree bark brown)! Now we know why we get grass stains on our knees when we crawl around on the grass!

Pen Pals Since January, the students of Room 205 have been perfecting the art of letter writing with Pen Pals! Our Pen Pal friends were a Grade 3 class from Fenside Public School. We got to know each other through exchanging letters back and forth. We learned to ask thoughtful questions and "continue the conversation" with each new letter. In June, we had the pleasure of meeting our Pen Pals in person at a picnic in Morningside Park. We played games, splashed in the water, and had a ton of fun getting to know our Fenside friends even better.

Soccer Tournament On June 8th, the Grade 2/3 Soccer Team headed to Three Valleys P.S.  to participate in a tournament. After having to cancel a few weeks prior, the sun came out and a wonderful day was had by all!!
