Two baskets are up for grabs this year, as the 12th annual Youth Benefit Golf Tournament organizers get started with their annual youth grant and scholar-ship fundraising efforts. This is the year they hope to break the $100,000 mark of distributed funds, said Mike Long. It all started with the goal of one $500 scholarship for a local student. The fundraiser has since grown to become a significant resource for Santiam Canyon youth organizations. The two baskets up for raffle - one for the men and one for the ladies - showcase

wines, beer, meats, cheeses and many other goodies, all put together to set the stage for a football or girls night. The men’s basket is on dis-play at US Bank in Mill City and the ladies basket at the 1317 State St. branch in Sa-lem. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. All proceeds from the basket raffle and the golf tournament on August 4 go toward schol-

arships and funding assistance for youth programs in the Santiam Canyon from Stayton-Sublimity to Detroit-Idanha. Info: www.ybgolf.com or call Mike Long at 503-897-4902.

The activity was part of the Bakery’s one year anni-versary celebration - which marked a milestone with free samples, tea and other goodies. Sugar and Spice Bakery started in the home kitchen of Lyons resident Sarah Smith, and quickly grew

into a full retail location as they became known for their decadent scones, fresh morning biscuits,

mini pies and muffins.

Mill City Fire: thanks for your donations The Mill City Volunteer Firemen would like to thank everyone who donated to next year’s fireworks. This year, the volunteers spent $5,500 on the fireworks and collected approximately $1,900 in the crowd on the night of the 4th. The volunteers spend a lot of hours preparing and keeping their certifications cur-rent so that we can have a nice display every year. For those of you that did not get a chance to donate and still want to, we will be putting up donation cans around town for the next couple of weeks, or you can stop by the Fire Hall and donate if you wish. We would like to thank the City Of Mill City for allowing us to use the waste water treatment plant to set the fireworks off each year. We hope everyone had a good time during the 4th and hope to see you next year.

Hey! We caught you waving!Remember that red-headed ball of energy sporting a

camera and tossing out free issues of The Canyon Weekly? Yup, that was our publication’s owner, Karen Widmer -

and she was taking photos of you from the inside of Mill City’s Fourth of July Parade!

Can you find your patriotic self?

The Cascade Foothills Saturday Faire kicked off with a bang this year - with a new location, some new vendors and a new one-man, stilt-walking, juggling, balloon twisting-comedy-clown act who goes by the name Chris Corrado. Corrado, a juggler who owns “Bring Home the Circus” kept the crowd enter-tained last Saturday at the vendor event on Grove St. at Odds and Ends Collect-ibles (former Branch Equipment). The veteran circus clown from Cincin-nati recently relocated to the Oregon; during the week, he’s is a medical device engineer. But on the weekend, he teaches as he performs. The Cascade Foothills Saturday Faire was organized by Joyce Trout of San-tiam Hearts to Arts. The next events will be on Saturday, August 4 and September 1 from 9:30am-5:50pm. Vendor spaces are still open; 10x10

spot is $30. Call 503-897-3116 or email [email protected] to reserve your spot. For a digital application, email [email protected] weekend, the shady grass area next to Hwy 22 proved the perfect spot for Chris Corrado to cut volunteer Tim Widmer in

half (below). Later that day, special guest Woody (a young paint foal, bottom right)

owned by Into the Wild Equine Adven-tures, allowed several children to hold his head in their laps as he slept. Fresh to You Produce brought fresh, locally grown fruits

and veggies to the Faire and the North Santiam Chamber of Commerce (left) was there handing out local maps and business

Great river level and weather conditions this week make the North Santiam River one of the best places for summer fun in the Willamette Valley! The cool water (50’s) provides relief from the heat and good habi-tat for the fish. Temp around Packsaddle is good for fish most of the day now, and it gets a little cooler in the evenings and mornings. Mehama and Stayton are a little warm in the afternoon; very good in the early mornings. The warmer temperatures cause steelhead to be interested in attacking large flies with various colors including purple, black, red, orange, and green. Oval silver tinsel and osprey feathers add interest to the offering. Spoons and spinners also work well. While most anglers are using flies and spoons, some interest is gained by standard but small lures like single corkies with a little egg or shrimp or worm attached. This is the

time of year that bobber and jig fisher-men love, and it will last for 3 months. Big trout often stay in deep pools and feed on the bottom of the river, where there are plenty of crawdads, little fish, and other morsels. They sometimes come into shallower water to feed on bug hatches or just to roam around. We found one of those three pound beauties last week in the area of Mill City, and it nibbled just like a minnow. North Santiam River Guides Association met on June 27 and discussed plans for the July 14 club picnic. RSVP to Chap Milbank (503-585-4569) for a steak or salmon deal and potluck dishes. Social (and fire starting) at 5pm and dinner at 6pm at North Santiam State Park. Guests are welcome. The “Learn the River” trip of July 7 went very well. We had several boats that all had successful runs through the best white wa-

ter on this river. Other trips are available through North Santiam River Trips. We saw two big birds sitting on a branch near Mad Creek (in the middle of Minto Park) last week, and they had grey bodies and white heads. I really could not tell if they were eagles or osprey until they flew away and the huge white tails were visible. In this same area, we often see turkey buz-zards and sometimes Great Blue Heron. Fishing around Mehama in the early morn-ing and around Packsaddle and Minto Parks in the early evening make sense. If fish think like humans, we will be able to find them. Running the river any time of day is de-lightful; the conditions are ideal and are pre-dicted to continue. Summer is finally here.

The entire staff of the Mar-ion County Sheriff’s Office was shocked and saddened by the news of Sr. Deputy Tyler Chapman’s death this afternoon. Chapman died in an off-duty motor vehicle crash on Interstate 5 near Albany. The Oregon State Police is conducting that in-vestigation. Sheriff Jason Myers recog-nized Sr. Deputy Chapman’s service with our Office with the following comments, “We share with his family the grief of his passing as he was also a part of our law enforcement family. Tyler was beloved by his peers and known for his infectious sense of humor. He was consummate professional, dedicated and committed to training and educating law enforcement officers of the future. He will be sorely missed” Tyler Chapman was born in Califor-nia but developed strong local ties after coming to Oregon. Tyler graduated from

Sprague High School in Salem and served in the United States Navy before returning to his hometown community to pursue a ca-reer in law enforcement. He served with the Gervais and Mt. Angel Police De-partments before joining the Marion County Sher-iff’s Office in 1999. During his 13-year Sher-

iff’s Office service, he worked in the Enforcement Division as a patrol deputy and detective. He also served in the Civ-il Unit and the Court Services Division. Most recently he worked as a deputy assigned to patrol the Chemawa Indian School in Salem. Chapman assisted with the Regional Reserve Officer Academy and also taught law enforcement courses at Chemeketa Community College. Deputy Chapman lived and made his life in Salem with his wife, Torry, two children and their extended family and friends.

Ant was born April 13, 2007, in Salem OR, to parents Brittany Endicott and Jacob Allen. Anthony loved Lightning “Dude” McQueen. In fact, he loved all the char-acters from the Cars mov-ie, though “Dude” was his favorite. Later he came to love playing ‘Angry Birds.’ Recently, he found his love for shooting zombies on any game system that his dad or uncles would play with him. He was a sweet Angel and will be missed so much. He made us all smile. Ant made us a stronger family. We will be patiently waiting, until we see him again. Anthony is survived by his mother Brit-

She will be laid to rest with her husband in the Claggett Cemetery in Keizer. Daphna was born Aug. 28, 1916 to John P. and Lucy H. (Burney) Thurman in Cochiss, Arizona. After graduating from high school, she went to beauty school. On June 7, 1941, she married James E. Pyeatt in Tucson. He brought 3 children into this marriage, Virginia, James and Donald, and to them one son, Benton, was born. They lived in Arizona for several years before moving to Salem, where they spent many years. They returned to New Mexico, where they owned a mobile home park. They returned to Lyons, where they lived for most of the rest of her life, where she worked at the Post Office. In 2005, she moved with her foster daughter, Barbara Trombley to Soldotna, where she re-mained until her passing. Daphna belonged to the Methodist

Church and North Fork Quilting Club. She also baked and decorated all of the families birthday cakes and other occasional cakes. She canned for the family and strived to help the fam-ily at all times. She loved to work in the flowers and garden and did fancy work, such as cross

stitch, crocheting and quilting. In her older years, she loved to paint and color pictures and read animal and bird books. She was always happy and had a smile on her face. We will miss her so much as she was a wonderful asset to our family. She was preceded in death by her par-ents, husband James Pyeatt, sons, Ben-ton & Donald Pyeatt, daughter, Virginia Roles, twin brother, David Thurman, brother, Merlin Thurman & sister, Clarice Trombly. Survived by a stepson, James Pyeatt of Wickenburg, Ariz., sister, Nellie Sheppard of Yuma, Ariz., several grand-children, nieces and nephews, a many good friends, including, Margaret Kergil and Donna Hamilton. Serving the family, North Santiam Fu-neral Service, Stayton.

Diane, loving wife, adorable Momma, special friend to so many, claimed vic-tory over cancer by receiving her angel wings on July 2nd at the age of 61. She battled breast cancer since 2000. Her un-wavering faith in God and the will to be here for her children, grandchildren, and her husband has been an inspiration to so many. Our family finds peace knowing that she is dancing with Je-sus and no longer in pain. She has provided hope for so many. We are ever thankful and honored to have had her in our life! Diane was born in Aberdeen, S.D. to parents Edna and Donald Nelson. She ultimately ended up re-siding in San Diego, California where she met, and very quickly fell for the man of her dreams, the love of her life, and her best friend JR Nye. They shared an intense and deep rooted love from that moment. They officially joined their two hearts with a promise of unconditional love and commitment to one another on July 15th, 1978. Together from this love for each other they cre-ated an extremely close-knit family of 8, lovingly known as “The Nyes” They raised their six chil-dren on large doses of love and values, that Diane instilled in each of them. Their home was built on this very love and togetherness that was so impor-tant to both of them. One of these values is the im-portance of family. A near weekly tradition at the Nye house is “Family Night” for which her loving children have awarded her “Mom of a Lifetime.” Diane is preceded in death by her father Don-ald Nelson; mother Edna Wiseman; sister Phyllis Phyle; and brothers Tony Jacobson and Ronald “Ronnie” Nelson. She survived by her husband JR; daughter Sara (Kary); son Joshua (Melissa); son Gabriel (Nicole); daughter Christiana; son Noah (Courtney); daughter Danielle, daughter Julie Shafer, granddaughter Annabelle Diane; and sister Opal Marangon (Rudy). There was a celebration of Diane’s life at the Morning Star Community Church in Salem July 10 with a reception following. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Youth Missions at Morningstar Community Church in honor of her. The family asks that you jot down a special memory that you have of Diane, so that we can share them amongst family, friends, and grandchildren for years to come. She was certain-ly an angel walking amongst us, and what better way to help keep her memory alive! We love and miss you terribly Mommafay, thank you for the

Public Hearing Notice The City of Lyons is completing the North Santiam Regional Microenterprise Assis-tance Program funded with Community Development Block Grant funds from the Oregon Business Development Department. This project offers free general classroom training and assistance in multiple business topics to entrepreneurs who reside in the non-entitled cities and unincorporated areas of southeastern Marion County and north-eastern Linn County who want to open or improve a microenterprise. It is estimated that the project has benefited at least 45 per-sons of whom more than 51% are low or moderate income. A public hearing will be held by the Lyons City Council at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at Lyons City Hall, 449 5th St, Ly-ons, Oregon. The purpose of the hearing is for the City Council to obtain citizens’ views about the

project and to take comments about the lo-cal government’s performance as it relates to the handling of the grant. Written com-ments are also welcome and must be re-ceived by Monday, July 23, 2012. Both oral and written comments will be reviewed by the Council. The location of the hearing is accessible to the disabled. Please contact Lyons City Hall at (503) 859-2167 if you require special ac-commodations to attend or participate in the hearing. More information about the Oregon Com-munity Development Block Grant program and the project is available for public review at Lyons City Hall during regular office hours.
