Oldrich Duras v Rudolf Spielmann, Pistyan 1922.

Duras, a Czech government official, was among

the world top ten of his day, and the gifted but

    inconsistent Spielmann was his favourite

opponent. Here Duras (White, to move) is a

pawn down, but what really matters is the

danger to both kings. White can't checkmate by

Rxe8 because the black queen pins the rook

against the white king. Duras then saw that 1

Qf4?? escaping the pin is met by Qxh6+ and

mate next move, while 1 Kh1?? suffers the same

fate. Duras found a way to win, and experts

were so impressed that he got the brilliancy

prize. What was White's winning move?

KenKen is the new puzzle that's taken the world by storm, occupying the

#1 slot for Puzzle Books on Amazon for several months now. KenKen is

described by Will Shortz, New York Times Puzzle Director and internation-al puzzles guru, as 'the most addictive puzzle since Sudoku.

    Rules for playing KenKen

    1. Each row and column must be filled with numbers 16 without any

number being repeated2. The numbers in each heavily outlined set of squares, called cages, must

combine (in any order) to produce the target number in the top corner,

using the mathematical operation indicated3. Cages with just 1 square should be filled in with the target number in

the top corner4. A number can be repeated within a cage as long as it is not in the

    same row or column
