We’re well into the “summer” months now but as usual the good old British weather is letting us down. Hope you guys and girls aren’t getting too wet out on your bikes. Shame the sun didn’t shine too much for the Queen but it seems like everyone had a good time despite the rain. Maybe you lot had the weekend off from calling points to enjoy the Jubilee celebrations instead but I suspect most likely you stayed at home with a cuppa and a copy of CallOver.

Your response has been fantastic with more and more subscriptions coming in every day. We are getting great feedback which I always enjoy reading and passing to all concerned. A good way to stay in touch is via Twitter and Facebook, just search for TheCallOver. Here’s a couple of last month’s mentions:

We hear a lot that people you meet while on the Knowledge are probably friends for life, but could you travel around the world with them? We recently heard about the trio who set the world record for completing the longest ever journey in a black cab. They drove through 4 continents and over 50 countries with just a few hiccups on the way, finally making it back to London after driving 43,319.5 miles. The guys say they are still the best of friends!

We mentioned in the last issue that, thanks to TfL, we recently had the opportunity to attend a badge presentation and interview John Mason, Director of London Taxi and Private Hire. In this issue we bring you the first of four very special features which we hope will give you some helpful insight into those all important Appearances and the knowledge process generally. As always the support we receive from all at TfL is greatly appreciated and we hope it helps you prepare better for your days at Palestra.

As usual we have our regular contributors offering some amusing and helpful advice into the world that is the Knowledge of London. This was my best appearance yet! Called confidently and fluent all the way through.

That now puts me on 9 points and up for my drop to 28’s on my next appearance!

I’ve got to work extremely hard from now until then. Time goes so fast and the next

appearance arrives before you know it so can’t take my foot off the pedal at all! I’m

going to keep on doing what I’ve been doing and turning my weak areas into strong

areas! Next app is Big!! But then again I say that for every app!!

WHAT WILLYOUBE ASKED ?

You’ve passed scrutiny by Palestra’s security, you’ve relaxed as much as you can in the waiting area, and you’ve been called in by the examiner. It’s now time to convince your examiner you’ve been eating, drinking and sleeping one way systems, river crossings, and all those little turnarounds that examiners like to ask.

On your first Appearance you will be asked runs based on the Blue Book. This gives you a sporting chance to demonstrate what you have learned and to get you off and running. On subsequent Appearances more is expected of you as you progress - particularly if you are in a position where you might get a drop. The Blue Book will re-appear throughout your Knowledge career and you neglect it at your peril.

The Knowledge is not an exact science and the “best” route for a particular run is open to interpretation. You will see a variety of examiners, all with their own specialities and different interpretations. That is the strength of the Knowledge system.

Hesitation is probably the area most open to interpretation. What one examiner sees as reasonable thinking time, another will see as not knowing, and may dock points. In my spiel to candidates on their first Appearance I would say that all you have to do is connect two Points. If you manage that, you may score. There’s no harm in keeping your runs simple. Don’t over complicate things, if you’re not sure don’t call those out. I’d see candidates sit there with their brains whirring trying to get the line spot-on. You’ll get maximum points for perfection if it comes off, but many people lose more marks for hesitation than they do for dropped Points or a wide line. Also, bear in mind you are allotted twenty minutes (thirty for New Starts). Some candidates are shocked when they’re told they’ve run out of time on the third run. And however confidently you call; you’ll almost certainly be rumbled if you do anything illegal. Many candidates make the mistake of learning the Points from the schools’ sheets while failing to look for their own. Examiners can get a lot of sport by asking major hotels and train stations. Before you get your badge they want to make sure you know all the hotel cab ranks, and how to get in and out of stations. You shouldn’t be victimised over an obscure Point, but if you can’t find your way out of Waterloo Station you deserve low marking. My advice to those on Finals is to physically drive the runs including Heathrow and have a good look around. It’s easier to learn now than waiting until you’ve a cab full of passengers with a coach behind you.

I would often ask the Blue Book staple, Victoria to Liverpool Street. “What does he want?” they would ask on the Knowledge forums, thinking it was a trick question. No trick. I wanted to see if you could get from Victoria to Liverpool Street. I didn’t care if you used the embankment or two bridges; I just wanted to satisfy myself that you’d be confident with the bread and butter runs when you are out in the cab. Another run I liked was Waterloo to St. Pancras. Candidates would go shooting up Kinsgsway thinking they’d ten points in the bag, then grind to a halt at Russell Square. There are several acceptable options from here, but there are ample options for illegal turns too. Some people would be suddenly stricken with

doubt and could be panicked into doing something silly.

Some examiners want to see you have gone out and found obscure Points, while others like to see an interesting line. I was never a Points man. For me, the line is the most important thing. I’d ask my favourite pubs and restaurants, but many were asked simply to hang an interesting line on. If the line went through a park or around an awkward bend in the river, all the better.

As many runs will be based on the jobs examiners have had in the cab, new Points and runs can be expected on Monday. You may learn the bank runs as all examiners have a stock of their favourites, but their Monday Morning Special may come as a surprise. Runs asked are sometimes taken from the top of the examiner’s head after you’ve sat down, but it’s more likely they are decided upon that morning or on the previous day. Everyone involved with the Knowledge lives with the nagging truth that they could always learn more. You can’t prepare for every unexpected question, but if you’ve been putting the work in by keeping on top of the Blue Book, and perhaps devising your own runs into areas you’re weak on, you’re probably doing all you can. Points dropped could be asked next time, so best learn them afterwards. If your file suggests you are weak on the south, expect a trip out to Crystal Palace sometime soon. Work on your weaknesses until they become strong points.For best results, call with confidence. You can conceal a multitude of sins if you sound convincing. Examiners don’t like candidates who call so fast they can’t be followed, but a steady-paced, confident, call will hold you in good stead. Rushing off seemingly without thinking works for a minority, but most people prefer a bit of thinking time. If the run doesn’t come to you quickly, try reversing it in your head. If you know the run but can’t recall the name of a particular road, say so and continue. I didn’t care too much if you confused Cab Road, Station Approach and Spur Road; I just wanted you to make it clear you’d been there and wouldn’t make yourself look daft with a cab-full of passengers. If you don’t know if you’re allowed to leave on a particular side of the road, try asking. If no response, you could say “I think I can leave on the right, but if I can’t I’d...” , then describe the turnaround. Even if you can’t think of the road names you should score something.

Welcome to the M&M Column, with a special mention to all those who enjoyed my debut in the last issue. My main objective is to shed some light on controversial topics within the Knowledge. So naturally my first port of call is to address the wonderful topic of ‘Turn-arounds’ and points that are ‘Leave on Left/Right ONLY’ (Lve/L or R from now on).This topic primarily concerns knowledge candidates as a ‘normal’ person would not put their mind through such unnecessary trauma, attempting to make sense out of such a contradictory mess.

Some Knowledge bods say that ANY point can be set-down on L or R. MYTH!The problem is that you hear so many ‘Myths’ through the appearance grapevine and most candidates are simply too nervous to ask an examiner a direct question. This doesn’t leave us with much ‘Method’ to go by.

An obvious example of a Lve/L ONLY point is SECRETS Club 1. This is clearly on a one-way road, Glenthorne Road. When you leave this point you have no choice but to go left and head east towards Hammersmith. The turn-arounds to leave this are easier than to set-down. It is wise to learn the latter, as it can be an old favourite for examiners who don’t want you to use King/ Studland Streets. They expect you to be able to cut across from Trussley Rd, Hamm’ Gr, Adie Rd Etc.

The following examples were always problematic when I was re-cently on appearances, so hopefully they will help you make some sense of things.

City of London Coroners Court; This ‘point’ (point of INTEREST to normal people) is found on Upp Thames St, just West of Cousin Lane on the South Side. Technically (since they removed the centre reservation, ‘CRev’ hereafter) this point could be S/Down on R, but in reality it’s very tight to do so and not quite safe to Lve/R afterwards. That tends to be a good rule of thumb. NOT always as the knowledge is full of contradictions, but usually.

St Georges’ Cathedral;This is a trick question as its one of the few points in London where you’re forced to Lve/L yet there is NO turn-around to be done. You simply either ‘Lve/R’ which is technically impossible due to the position on the lights/crossing or use common sense and actually tell the examiner the problem you’ve noticed and they will tell you what they want.

Royal College of Arms;A real nightmare IF you get this wrong, so be careful!Sometimes certain points will have a forecourt or private entrance. This fills us with the confidence that we can leave or enter a point from BOTH ways. However this particular point proves to be an

exception. There is clearly a ‘CRev’ on Q.Victoria St running outside the point, but there is also a ‘slip’ section left for vehicles to leave the premises. This is where the Knowledge can be technical, even cruel.

One of my top tips for studying The Knowledge is that you can’t always be fool-proof as there are many exceptions and views or in-terpretations. I would encourage you to ask the examiner if a point is suspect and you’re unsure. They will either tell you or they won’t, in the case of the latter I hope you will have your turn-around ready!However if you don’t use your initiative and ask, then you are chanc-ing a ‘D’ score. So take a pro-active approach because contrary to general belief, most the examiners do not mind you asking a simple question. I did this in at least 3 different appearances.A definite exception to the rule would be a Fire Station. I have long understood that you can leave or enter these from L or R. Again there are ‘Myths’ that certain examiners will not allow you to do turn R into Euston Fire Station. I’m sure they’ll usually specify if such a restriction applies for that particular RUN.

I hope those examples have given you some insight into the hot topic of ‘Turn-arounds’.

N.B. You can’t know everything. So know what you know and know it well.

Last February our Queen, Elizabeth II became only the 2nd Monarch in England’s history to reach the Diamond (60 years) Jubilee, the other being her Great-Great-Grandmother Queen Victoria.

Q. Victoria reigned until her death on Jan 22nd 1901, marking 63 yrs, 7months and 2days.

Q. Elizabeth II has reigned since the death of her father King John VI, Feb 6th 1952 to date, taking her to 60 yrs, 4 months and counting.

It seems the ladies have the upper hand regarding Sovereign Longevity!

I was pleased with this appearance having scored 2 D’s on the bounce following 5 C’s on the bounce previously and Sir was extremely complimentary and encouraging throughout. Overall I was more than happy and look forward to the next one.

Start at the beginning, Manor House Station…

As with any endeavor you have to start somewhere and in most cases the start is probably the best place to begin and for me, doing the knowledge, that place was Manor House Station.

Anyone who has ever tried, is currently attempting, or has already completed the knowledge; chances are they’ll remember this one for as long as they live - List 1 Run 1 – Manor House Station to Gibson Square and as I pulled up at Manor House Station it suddenly dawned on me that I was at the bottom of the Mount Everest of climbs, I was a small dot on the landscape of London, preparing myself for what would be a mammoth journey.

The green badge I was trying to get my hands on seemed like a million miles away, at this moment in time, in reality it was a little less, as most Knowledge students do on average around 22,000 miles on a scooter, but it wasn’t mileage that was bothering me, it was

retention, and to be honest I wasn’t sure if my brain could retain so much information. It’s not called the knowledge for nothing; because that’s exactly what you need to pass it, knowledge, I just wasn’t sure if my mind was going to be able to take it all in, every bit of information, and then be able to recall it in front of an examiner.

I would have to learn everything, impossible right? Well, if it wasn’t for the fact that there were already taxis out on the road, men and women who had already completed the knowledge, then yes, I would have thought such a task would have been impossible.

Two thoughts ran through my mind, as I prepared to do the first run. The fact that my brain had recently been compared to a certain kitchen utensil (a sieve) and the other was a more positive one with regards to people who had already passed the knowledge, well, I thought, if they could do it then so could I.

So, off I set, leaving Manor House Station on my left down Green Lanes and all was going well until the bit where I had to Comply Highbury Corner, which I did, in fact I complied Highbury Corner at least six times before leaving by Upper Street and finishing the rest of the run reaching my destination point of Gibson Square. The first run of 320 done and I kind of surprised myself that I hadn’t taken a wrong turn. Yes, I had gone round Highbury Corner more than once, but all in all it was a good start, in fact it seemed like a stroll in the park this knowledge malarkey and as that thought entered my head I knew that at some point it would come back to haunt me because the words ‘easy’ and ‘stroll in the park’ are not the kind of words that are normally associated with the knowledge.

‘knowledge’ in this area as I’d ‘showed off’ a little in the 1st question with the cut thru at the end.

Needless to say after a long pause I scored a 0. Run 3 I couldn’t remember the points I dropped. But

they were quite obscure. I got a 6/7 for this.Run 4 This last call was fluid as can be. Along with

the 1st question my calling impressed the examiner. It saved me getting a ‘D’ after my ZERO for the 2nd

Question. So it must have been a 9/10.

This was a super smooth ‘banker’ to start. It’s obvious Victoria Station to Liverpool Street Station,

just with a turnaround at the start & an extension at the end.

It was my first 21 appearance so I wanted to keep it simple; however I couldn’t resist showing the cut

through around Brick Lane with Deal Street etc.

All in all I scored a ‘C’ from 3 runs. Approx 24-25. So it was close! But that’s why you learn all the

‘missing pieces’ you can!

The examiner did state my calling was superb. However the 2nd Question nearly ruined me and I

dropped some points they considered important. But they also said you cannot know ‘everything’.

Happy Jubilee to you all! Taking advantage of the lovely long weekend (thanking you kindly Ma’am), Mr Moggy and I have escaped the dreaded road closures and fled our treasured London, making for the wilds of a remote spot in the country. Don’t worry, it hasn’t stopped the endless calling of runs, but we have enjoyed the local festivities, including the lighting of the beacon and copious amounts of cake and bunting. Although the celebrations have taken place all over the country, the main events have taken place in the Capital – a Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, a National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral, a reception at the Mansion House, a Diamond Jubilee lunch at the Palace of Westminster and of course the colourful Thames Pageant.

The estimated global audience was a staggering 2 billion, and I couldn’t help but feel an immense amount of pride in London whilst watching the progress of the Royal Barge and the impressive if soggy flotilla as it wound its way around the Thames. The endless illustrious landmarks, the size and enthusiasm of the crowds, and the overall effort put in by everyone – from the hordes of bobbies in hi vis jackets to Mrs Miggins and her cake competition. I think even the rain brought out a bit of the old London Spirit with people determined not to let the downpour ruin the day.

Aside from playing the game of calling every point named by the presenter, and trying some comedy point to points taking into account all those bridges being closed, I was very aware that the eyes of the whole world were looking at our beloved London – where we spend every day driving around, being frustrated by that elusive point, gritting our teeth in the rain and cold often during unsociable hours. It is easy to become blinkered by the traffic and the grime and general Knowledge slog and forget just how wonderful our Capital is, and just what we are striving to do on the Knowledge. We are aspiring icons - palaces, crown jewels, Kings and Queens go hand in hand with black cabs, cabbies, and The Knowledge of London. Hopefully if you felt the pride in London as I did, it will serve to spur you on. London will become, in effect, our office. What lucky people we will be.

Coronation Cabbing - Jubilee Cab TriviaIn 1952 when our illustrious Queenie first came to the throne, horse-drawn Hackney Carriages had only just left service, being used as late as 1947. The newest motor cab in use would have been an Austin FX3, the body being built by Carbodies of Coventry with a Mann and Overton engine producing a whopping 50 bhp, compare that to my scooter Elsie who has 9! They were petrol but uneconomical so a diesel conversion was offered in this year – funny to think petrol prices were perhaps as relevant then as they are now!

On a more modern note – singer/songwriter Gary Barlow recently faced wrath from a London Cab driver over the traffic chaos caused by the Jubilee concert – apparently he was in a cab on the way to the Palace when he asked the driver if there was any way round. The cabbie replied “nah, some twit decided to build a stage there.” Gary bravely said “yeah, I can’t believe it” and kept his head down!

ESCAPE TO THE HIGHLANDSMore Royal recollections, this time from North of the Border….

It was 5.30 am as I lay in the bath thinking about the previous day which I had spent driving and assisting my taxi passengers around London as usual. Today would be completely different however as I’d be collecting a Land Rover from Buckingham Palace and driving it to Birk Hall near Ballater in Scotland; the Scottish holiday residence of Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

This had been my regular part-time job for 17 years, for which I held the Royal Warrant. For 14 years I travelled all around England and Scotland but then based myself in London, to combine this more easily with my role as a Cabbie, whilst other drivers did the long range work.

As I drove to Marlborough House (where I would leave my car) I heard on the radio a Land Rover had been stolen from Buckingham Palace during the night. When I reached The Palace I was informed the stolen Land Rover was in fact the one I would be driving that day. The police had recovered the vehicle and arrested the thief; I just hoped all the other local police forces had been informed otherwise I’d be getting stopped all the way to Bonny Scotland.

It was now 6.30am and the sun was shining, as I made my way up Constitution Hill and across London towards the M1. Then onto the M6, cutting across the top of Birmingham to Charnock Richard where I’d stop for breakfast. Then it was back on the M6 and A74 with the miles zipping past until I reached Gretna Green, where I’d stop again for lunch. Passing the edge of Glasgow on the M9 and A9 to Stirling, Perth and finally on country roads through Braemar to Balmoral.

On my first trip to Birk Hall I was instructed to go to Balmoral Castle and was told it was “the next building along the road”. They forgot to mention there were eight miles between the two and to say this part of the journey was somewhat different from driving an FX4 around London would definitely be an under statement. In this remote part of Scotland there are very few people to ask for directions if you’re lost, just trees, heather some deer and a few bunnies - not much help there!

On arrival at the royal residence I would have a cup of tea, freshen up and then explore the estate which extended to some 53,000 acres. The flower gardens during spring and summer are a beautiful spectacle of colour with a huge variety of flowers and shrubs. Part of the flower arrangement is on a slope with a flight of steps in the middle; quite often made into a royal design. After walking through the flowers you arrive at the River Dee where the Queen Mother used to go fly fishing in May and (when the water was high enough) during the summer as this was one of her favourite relaxing pastimes.

In the evening the housekeeper would provide myself and the other chauffeur who had driven up with a dinner, after which we might take a trip into Ballater for a leisurely pint before a good night’s sleep.

Next morning it was up early for a substantial breakfast before setting off for Castle Mey. Now I was driving a specially adapted coach which had been filled to the roof with luggage for the holiday, everything from clothes and household silverware to shotguns and fishing rods. The journey was about 200 miles mostly through isolated countryside so if the coach broke down, boy would you have a long walk!

Castle Mey is the only property owned by the Queen Mother; it was purchased in 1952, renovated and adapted to her specification. On arrival

you drove round the back to unload and from here there’s a magnificent view of Pentland Firth, a stretch of sea I had previously only heard about from BBC shipping forecasts. I was told by some of the other chauffeurs that if I was ever given the job of driving the royal corgis and a mishap occurred, when I got to Pentland Firth I might as well just keep going out to sea as my life wouldn’t be worth living!

Here, at this spectacular and unique location you can experience weather from all four seasons in the same day; snow, rain, wind and brilliant sunshine. Whist walking in the gardens with Sandy the Estate Manager, sampling the beautiful tended fruit crops and looking out to sea, I would think why the hell do I torment myself by sitting in London traffic all day breathing in fumes when there is an alternative which is so peaceful and where you can relax and fill your lungs with clean clear fresh air.

If you ever take a holiday in Scotland you’ll probably go to view John O’Groats. If so stay over on your way at the Castle Arms in Mey; pop across the road and take the tour of Castle Mey, the gardens and the farm. Then you’ll be tracing the steps of the Queen Mother where she used to take Ranger and his corgi colleagues on their daily walks.

After a day’s rest I’d then accompany the other chauffeur to Wick Airport. He would be driving the special edition Daimler and I would follow in the specially extended Ford Granada Estate. At the airport we’d await arrival of the Royal flight and then drive straight onto the apron and park right next to the plane. Once the Equerry alighted with the Queen Mother I would exchange roles with him and he would take over driving the Granada.

Then I would climb the aircraft steps and be flown back to London, sometimes alone or I may have a Royal Protection Police Officer as a travelling companion. During the flight we enjoyed the same service as royalty, quite an experience.

Next day it would be back to reality of course: “Kings Cross cabbie and hurry because I’m late” with no please or thank you. But I wonder if any other London Taxi drivers are able to treasure memories of strolling through those beautiful Castle gardens where occasionally the Queen Mother would come along smiling as always and stop to exchange pleasantries.

As mentioned in last month’s issue, CallOver recently spent a day at Palestra at the kind invitation of TfL attending the badge presentation, talking to successful candidates and interviewing John Mason, Director of London Taxi and Private Hire. Here, in the first of four special features we report on the sound advice provided to knowledge candidates proudly receiving their Green Badges.

“Congratulations you are now joining the best cab drivers in the world”

Those were the warm words of welcome from knowledge examiner Tony Swires at the badge presentation on 15 May 2012. Tony then spent about an hour providing valuable words of wisdom for those just starting their careers as London cabbies:

Rent or buy?For the first six months, I would advise you to rent a cab while you decide if you like the job. Learning the job and doing the job are two different things. If you decide you don’t like the job and have signed up to buy a cab over five years, you’re going to lose money.Also, you will still be learning and might well have a little prang. If that happens in a cab worth over £30,000, you will not be very happy. If you have an accident in a rental cab, they will give you another rental in its place.Be aware when you first rent a cab, garages might try to fob you off with the cheapest cab and charge you top rates. Remember, you are paying for a cab which should be decent. Check it over before you take it away as once you leave the garage you are legally responsible for things like bald tyres. Take it round the block for 15 minutes. If it doesn’t drive right, take it back. Make sure things like tyres, lights, tax disc and insurance are all right.As and when you do decide to buy a cab, keep a maintenance kit with you – including a couple of light bulbs, fuses, etc – to keep you going.

AppearanceWhether you rent or buy your first cab, always keep it clean. You are a public service. It does you a disservice when a cab is like the inside of a dog’s kennel. Every day, check your cab and make sure it is clean. There are lots of cab washes around who will give you a receipt for your accountant.I’m not expecting anyone to drive around in a shirt and tie, but always look respectable. There was an occasion I know of when a businessman needed a cab. The driver he called was wearing flip-flops, a t-shirt and cap, so the businessman walked away and called a private hire driver instead who was wearing a shirt and tie. That does not give us a good image. Every day, keep yourself clean and the cab clean. We will no longer be the best in the world if we let these standards slip.

MoneyMost of the time, you will be dealing with cash so you will need a

float. I have a rule that I only deal with £5 notes so in my float I have ten £5 notes. Every time I am given anything above this, I put it away in a separate money bag hidden away. That way, I know exactly how much is in my float at all times. Plus, if I happen to lose my cash bag or it is stolen, I will only ever lose £50 and not my whole night’s takings. I also have 30 £1 coins, £10 in 20ps and £5 in 10ps in my cash machine.If you’re given a large note, leave it on the dashboard while you sort their change. That way, they can’t argue that you’ve given them the wrong change as the note will still be in front of them.When you finish a shift, take everything out of your cab.

SicknessUnfortunately, people will sometimes be ill. If you are working at night and are unsure about a person hailing you down, drive five yards past them before stopping. If they stagger towards you, you do not have to take them, just keep going. Keep all your doors locked and only let them in when you want to let them in. If someone is extremely drunk, you do not have to let them in.If someone is sick in your cab, you have a right to charge them a penalty of £50. I keep lots of large, good quality plastic bags with me for anyone who looks like they might be ill.

EtiquetteIf a cab driver lets you out in front of them, the first job that comes up is not yours, it’s theirs. It’s not a dog eat dog world out there, we are one family.When you’re at a station or taxi rank, the first two cabs on the rank must have their lights on and the drivers sat in the cab and ready to go. The rest can stand outside or walk away until they become one of the first two cabs.There is also a 12-mile rule. Any jobs which come up under 12 miles, you must take. Any jobs over 12 miles, you can refuse. Bottom line is, if you don’t want to work, turn off your light. Do not pick and choose the jobs you do.

AbuseMost of the time, people are as good as gold. But, there are occasions when you can’t do the right thing by them. If you are given abuse which is unbearable, ask the passenger to stop or to get out of your cab. Don’t let the red mist gather and be tempted to chase after them if they owe you the fare.

Cashpoint stopsIf someone asks you to stop at a cashpoint, do it as soon as possible into the journey. If for any reason they claim to not be able to get any cash out, you will not have lost a whole fare.

DepositsIf you’re doing a long fare and are not sure about the person, you can’t really ask for money up front. If you ask for a good will deposit and they start umming and ahhing, be wary and ask if they want to stop at a cashpoint or pay by card.

Left propertyIf property is left in the back of your cab, take it to the nearest police station and get a receipt to prove it. Bear in mind the customer may remember whose cab they left it in so you always have to cover yourself in this way. That’s what makes us the best in the world; we are honest and decent.

Lone femalesOccasionally, you will get lone females in the back of your cab who are worse for wear and fall asleep. This is a very delicate situation and must be handled with caution. If you are near a busy high street and see a group of women, pull over and ask them to get in the back to wake the passenger and ask for their destination. If that’s not pos-sible, go to the nearest police station and ask an officer to approach the woman. Never, ever get in the back of the cab yourself with a lone female passenger.

Getting lostSometimes, you are going to go wrong. If you do go wrong, admit it to your passenger and cut their fare. Tell the passenger your plan and make sure it is alright with them.

I had to go out very early in the morning to get to Palestra. One dark morning I picked a pair of shoes from the rack in the porch, slipped them on, and drove to London. Parked at King’s Cross, I was walking along when I

realised my shoelace was undone. Something was wrong, as I didn’t remember putting on shoes with laces. Well, I had put one shoe with laces on! I’d actually left home wearing one laced Dr Marten and one slip-on loafer. Although they were both black, they were very different and looked ridiculous. I was too far from home to change so I had to

sit on the tube wondering if people were looking at my feet (and on the return journey of course). The other examiners

noticed well before coffee break and the event passed into folklore.

I was up for my appearance, I felt good about it as the sun was shining so no coats just the suit! But then it all went from bad to worse I went up got a D from my nemesis of an examiner,

then got on my bike to go home and the sky opened up and got soaked right through then was only 30 minutes

away from home and got a puncture on my bike! I could not believe my luck but this could only

happen on the knowledge!

entrances to the square were one way.) So there was no possible road to leave the square. So I told the examiner I couldn’t leave the square and he sat there and shook his head. He gave me a

D straight away, then I forced myself awake!! Woke up sweating!!
