Me again, cops, tweeps or padawan’s (Jedi apprentices’ – Guess who’s been watching the Star Wars re-runs on a Saturday afternoon!) Yes the Knowledge is like the Force, it should flow through you!

As for twitter it has gone barmy, by popular demand we launched point sheets as designed by our Knowledge student subscribers. Since the launch you have all been calling and tweeting and poking, so much so, I almost got pulled over by the boys in blue I was looking at the my phone so much.

After many requests from you guys about whether CallOver would be launching point sheets, I decided enough was enough and called for a lunch / board meeting East End style! As a working green badge it was hard enough to sacrifice the lunch hour rush so there was no way I was trudging over to HQ miles outside the 6 square miles, so the team were assembled at the famous G Kelly. One of the invitees was a ‘pie mash virgin’ and whispered he didn’t like the look of the liqueur so he will have it dry! No chance of that! Being from the sticks and not understanding east end etiquette they foolishly sat at the tables and allowed yours truly to deliver four portions of double pie double mash whilst having my mobile crooked between my ear and shoulder. When I then had to get the forks and spoons (the spoons caused much confusion to the pie mash virgin) the lovely owner belted out ‘oh you just sit there and he’ll bring it over, do’u want him to feed it to you too?’. Whilst enjoying the east end grub I listened to ‘team techies’ that had designed the input system, the email system and of course the point sheets, having seen the end product I gave the nod of approval for them to be launched in November free of charge.

We have really gone to town in the launch of the points, but only after some testing and consulting from our very own recruits, one of which, who we shall refer to as ‘DeeJhay’, recently got the drop from 56’s to 28’s, well done you, and also scored his first 3 points very recently on 28’s!

The main principle behind the sheets is ‘More 4 Less!’ as it was proposed by our own recruits that if they promote them and get the majority of K guys and gals subscribed, would it be possible to drive the cost down? We are very pleased with the positive feedback, and for you all to read more it is on the centre fold of this issue.

BTW – for the point sheets, check your bloody SPAM folders!!!!!!!! Oh and as they were a freebie in November, you crashed the subscriptions page in the first day, oops!

The usual suspects are here with a few little newbies so get your reading glasses on and don’t miss the news page as it has some good information for you.

We are now on to our next little bonus for all you hard working folk during these miserable cold wet and dark months. We shall be launching another little surprise involving your actual runs, again to help with your journey through the knowledge.

You have once again exhausted our supplies of Hi Vis so we are currently working on another promotion whereby we hope to increase the number of monthly cash prizes – watch our website for more details.

Page 12: TCO10 For Web
Page 13: TCO10 For Web

Points mean prizes! Well, sort of. In our game, a good collection of points can set you on your way to a rewarding self-employed career. Hopefully, CallOver will now help to make your quest for Points a little easier. Anything that keeps Points fresh in the mind is a help.

Like many things, Points are subject to fashion. When I was one of six new Knowledge Examiners starting in the summer of 2011, some candidates were worried. Many candidates had become used to the established Examiners and they wondered what we might bring to the table. Examiners have their favourite runs and Points and candidates know that sooner or later the “bankers” are going to come up like a lottery win. We were an unknown quantity, with no published history of bankers. No-one knew what we would ask.

What became apparent to us was that many candidates relied on the Points listed by the schools. Points listings are always helpful, but candidates also need to pro-actively seek out their own. If you make the effort to view listed Points you’ll remember them better. Any prominent Point is fair game and you’ll need to see them with your own eyes. Don’t neglect the obvious: make sure you learn the hotel forecourts and your way in and out of train stations.

As for fashion and the Examiner’s personal whims, I would often draw blank looks when asking Points that I was asked myself in the 1980s. A couple of my fellow Examiners shared my interest in restaurants that were all the rage twenty five years’ ago. A couple are in Beauchamp Place (Lady Diana’s favourite restaurant anyone?). Another I visited recently is in Stratton Street (for my wife’s birthday I should add; I don’t want you all to think I live like that all the time).

It’s Good to TalkPoints still cause confusion and misunderstanding when the Knowledge is over and you’re out in your big black beetle (or bread van). In the days before comprehensive Points directories and satnavs I was asked for a hotel near Heathrow. I never knew the airport hotels, and I still don’t. On the way I asked another cab driver who confidently told me It was the one you can see as you come up to the Heathrow exit on the M4. No problem. Only thing was, it wasn’t the right hotel and I’m still heading west on the M4. After much embarrassment driving up and down the motorways of West London I finally delivered my passengers to their hotel. I think it was in Slough.

A couple of more recent jobs have caused me anxiety over the last couple of weeks. On a quiet Saturday afternoon in Covent Garden, an

Arab woman with not much English asked for Westfield. I explained there were two Westfields and which one did she want? She passed her phone to me so I could speak to the husband. “The one in the west in Shepherd’s Bush, or the one in the east by the Olympic Park?” I asked. “The one in the east” came the reply. I reiterated the request and we set off.

Sometimes people don’t realise how big London is. We made good progress, but in Bethnal Green, madam indicated it already seemed a long way to her destination. I agreed. She passed her phone to me and I told the husband the same. Another call at Hackney Wick. Her and the husband had clearly not understood the distance involved. The journey ended with an anxious passenger, an anxious husband, and an anxious cab driver doing his job to the best of his ability. I didn’t get a tip.

On the following Sunday I was asked to go to a hotel in Ilford from the rank at St Pancras. It was a foreign lady with a baby in a pushchair. The husband was already at the hotel, and already on the other end of the phone in a mission control role. He seemed surprised when I told him it would cost around £50 (a pretty accurate guess as it turned out). The journey followed a similar pattern as the Westfield job, as a series of fraught phone calls between her and him ratcheted up the anxiety from Hackney onwards (thankfully I wasn’t involved in these particular conversations). There was bad feeling all round, though I couldn’t gauge how much she thought I was to blame . Another couple who had underestimated distance. Hitting traffic in Forest Gate and she was shout-ing in Turkish at the husband and baby (who I was told needed a toilet pretty soon. Lovely).

I know Ilford about as well as I know the backstreets of Istanbul, but thankfully found the hotel. The young husband appeared surprisingly calm and pleasant and gave a small tip. The woman also calmed down and got out smiling. Once I swept the baby’s chips out the back I calmed down myself.

I don’t get too many difficult jobs like that, but a couple more fraught epi-sodes involving stopping at cash machines made for a handful of awkward jobs in a short space of time. If there is any moral to this story I’d say tell people how far a destination is if they’re obviously a visitor, and communi-cate as much as possible. And don’t blindly trust other cab drivers knowl-edge of Points without attempting to check things yourself.

LTI NEWS

It is with great sadness that the original Black Taxi – currently at the TX4 model – which has hit a

stumbling block. The Old Bird is so very iconic and we hear that there are hopefully buyers and the problems on the 400 steering columns are to be sorted which is good news for the sake of the

drivers and the trade generally. We did hear that were are some fantastic offers out there for ‘cash’ buyers, cash is always king, and anyone with cash on their hip were able to bid on the second hand

stock held by administrators. Whilst they are hopefully negotiating a buyout no sales are taking place currently, but if a buyer is sorted there may be some good opportunities for recently passed

out drivers who want to own an iconic traditional TX Taxi. If you are unsure because of the hearsay,

our very own well informed supporters of CallOver at A&N are willing to advise on what

vehicles are available and if there are any reported ‘no go’s!’

We are pleased to announce that we have set list of questions for the head examiner and will be

questions to be sent to HQ on [email protected]

I scored with 25 points ( 7, 6, 5, 7). The examiner wanted me on question 3 to use Blackfriars

Bridge, St. John St and Liverpool Rd. I also dropped one “point” on the beginning of Question 2.

I was very happy with this Appearance as I knew the questions well even though a couple were a bit

wide. Still more work to do and I’m happy that I’m moving in the right direction.

Page 21: TCO10 For Web

I started the knowledge in 1996 doing the old blue book of 400 runs.

It was something I wanted to do for a few years. I spoke to my cousin who had been a London taxi driver for 15 years. He went to the knowledge point school in Caledonian Road and collected my runs. He dropped them to me on the Saturday and I started on the Sunday. The first run in the book was Baker Street station to the Caledonian Club.

I had already done my CBT and got my bike but was very new to riding it. I remember going up to London and not having a clue where I was going and eventually found the station and from there done my first run, I think I done three that day then came home and thought how am I going to remember these but after calling them a few times they stuck.

I was working full time at the time in the Print trade so went out on my bike every Saturday and Sunday and maybe two evenings in the week.

It took me just over a year to complete the blue book but then I done all the quarter mile radius points with each run, this as I look at it now wasn’t the best thing to do because I was too busy concentrating on remembering the runs and when the runs were finished I couldn’t remember all the points so needed to visit them all again which I did.

After doing that and collecting loads more points I put in for my test then had my first visit to Penton Street.

The place was very daunting and I was very nervous I sat the test and passed quite easily.

I remember I was called up for my first 56 day appearance within two

weeks, I got there very early and went into the cafe and had a few cups of tea then wandered over to the carriage office sat in the quiet waiting room and was called in by Mr Price he seemed very nice and gave me some big points but I only managed a D.

I then went up three more times, once more with Mr Price and unfortunately was given D’s each time, so therefore was redlined and back to the beginning.

It didn’t seem to bother me too much because I felt I did not know enough. So there I was starting the appearances again and managed to score a C on my next two appearances.

I seemed to be doing really well then had problems in my private life and after much thought I gave it up. Which I have regretted ever since.

I always knew I would start it again as I said it was something I wanted to do. So in 2010 I applied again and started from the beginning and was up to Manor House Station. I went out about four days a week for about three months then another problem hit me and I did not feel right and was diagnosed with depression, after another year off and not feeling like I wanted to go out or get out if bed I thought it was slipping away again which it was, I lost my job but all along I never gave up hope and never wanted to give up the knowledge so with great help from my wife and family I managed to crack on and get back on my bike and it felt good I started to enjoy the work. I know I have a long way to go but I know I can do it after having tough times. So guys and girls if it’s what you want then grab it and never give up, good luck to you all.

I was ok with this appearance, for my first run I used the wrong bridge, as the examiner

wanted Chelsea or Albert bridge, but not too bad and then run 3 I set off in the wrong

direction as I should have left by Leigham Court Road, overall it wasn’t a bad appearance.

I am going to keep going out on the bike as much as possible as the more you’re out there

the more you learn.

After ThoughtsGet in there; I have done it, feels amazing to think I have reached

the end. I can now sell my bike and get myself a taxi. I am going to rent my taxi first, need to plan my week and my hours and know what I can earn before I make any commitment to buying. I feel

really nervous, to think I am now able to get out on the roads and work, more nervous than my appearance didn’t actually think that was possible. But so pleased I have finished this side of Christmas.

Yes they are finally here. We have been promising surprises for a while but like the magazine which was first thought of nearly 3 years ago but is only coming up to its first years anniversary, we have asked, listened, remembered and then implemented! Not only have we done all that so you get the best sheets around we also got is subsidised from one of our sponsors for the first month so you could all sample them FREE of charge. If you are only just hearing about it then you need to get on twitter because that went berserk! We had so much interest you crashed our bloody system! Yes we have been met with scepticism and we have made the point about all you COP’s giving moody registration numbers but the ‘what it’s all about’ detail on our website is really true myself and two friends, one who was my COP, the second his relative not only realised how difficult the Knowledge was but also understood todays demands on balanced living which seems impossible whatever stage you are on during the Knowledge. Yes we understand about syndicates and sharing data but the whole principle for us at CallOver is to unify all students so you get better options and if there is a cost then it is re-duced because we work on a volume basis. Therefore the POINTS principle is to obtain the majority of the students so rather than increase the prices for supplying them we can drive the price down!

Yes we are not mad we are hoping to achieve enough subscribers to drive the price DOWN. We have already received so much support that you guys get a head start. So in order to REDUCE the monthly Points Subscriptions you need to get as many guys you know to join in the campaign. We at CallOver will uphold our part of the bargain and continue with the launched sheets and you need to uphold your part! As for the content and detail, we are continuingly adding to the team offering much needed paid work or tank of petrol if you deliver the magazines for us so although we are rammed with offers email the office if you want to go on the waiting list. The beauty with the Knowledge is that you guys do actually finish so there is always going to be shifts available. The current team have commented that it actually helps educate them. As for the efficiency, I remember only too well either waiting or sometime even setting off to my COP and it being a waste of time as the sheets didn’t arrive. We’ve tried to make them as informative as any moc paper and initially simply sent them out as the guys and girls arrived back. It goes without saying, the job opportunities are offered to those that subscribe so we give back to the guys that support us. I sincerely hope the sheets are well received you all continue to support each other.

YES!THEY ARE FINALLY HERE!

28

So we are fast approaching that time of year again, yes the one where children are writing letters to Santa and the K brigade are busy learning which ice rinks are located where, what Christmas shows are on at various theatres and looking to see if the roads resemble anything to do with Christmas. So we just squeeze a little more out of our ever expanding brain cells, Yes I’ve been there and got the t-shirt to prove it (or shiny green and gold badge) in this case! Having been there and done it, ‘we’ at CallOver try to put into practice the smallest of detail that ‘we’ feel could of helped us when we were busy studying the K. Back then, the fees were cheaper, if I recall correctly £25 for a map test (not sure what the price’s are now).

So in our ever improving crusade of improvement, I asked one of our K students that work alongside us, what more can we do to help the K Brigade? Their response “POINTS!”

They informed us that they are roughly a set price across the board. I know from my time how essential they are and in our opinion they have to be, firstly accurate and secondly reliable. So it got us thinking, maybe we can ASSIST and HELP.

ASSIST by getting accurate Point sheets at various times throughout the day and week and HELP by reducing your monthly outgoings whilst you are studying the Knowledge.

‘I may add we have various shifts relating to the collection of points but rather than tweet email HQ, [email protected] if interested as there are students now on at later stages of 21’S’.

I still suggest that a school will benefit you in the long term depending on your outside commitments ie job family etc. Many students, myself and COPs included had sheets from one place and attended another school, on a pay as you go class. There’s no money up front this way, which was better value for money in my case.

Maybe a few schools may roll their eyes or even offer some new deal which has not been available in the past.

In our quest for CallOver website / Magazine to help and assist future cabbies, we need your support. So as one cabbie to another we need to stick together! I know that by seeing our thermometer, if we all stick together, things will get cheaper, it’s in your hands!

I hope by doing the free period you can see our point’s layout and I would like to think that if I could turn the clock back, my name would be on that mailing list.

Now I said I would mention a pet hate for my old COP which is cameras, now if you are about to receive your badge, be careful big brother is always watching you, as it stands my old COP is disputing two.

All members /subscribers received the above over 10 days ago demonstrating a reason why if you haven’t already joined you should do immediately as our members received the sheets FREE for the whole of November and received an introductory price for December!

With Christmas right around the corner all attention is all on the shops and that frantic search to get this years “it toy” … however at CallOver HQ we would like to encourage you KOL students to embrace in the spirit of Christmas and head down to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park. This year’s Christmas spectacular starts on 23rd November, continuing through to 6th January and mustn’t be missed.

What a great time I had last year, and can’t wait to visit again this year! For years the Europeans seem to have been beating us Brits with their Christmas extravaganzas and positively shoving their gingerbread houses down our throats, but finally it seems that us Brits are doing things right and Hyde Parks Winter Wonderland is proving a strong contender in the Christmas market stakes. There’s festive fun for kids from toddler to middle-aged. Admission is FREE, so you can go along anytime and get involved. Even if you just fancy some festive cheer and a break from all of the shops your wife continues to drag you around, why not stop by and grab a refresh-ing beverage of the German variety and maybe if your wife’s lucky you can treat her to a glass of mulled wine!

I would recommend starting your day at the 60 metre Giant Observation Wheel. I boarded my pod and then took a 15 minute ride through the chilly London atmosphere, giving me a bird’s eye view over the parks attractions and the many people below all getting into the Christmas spirit.

Stepping off, I then headed to the huge ice rink. The 100,000 twinkly lights, really made us feel we were skating under the stars. There’s plenty of room so you can take a leisurely glide or imagine you’re a speed skater at the Winter Olympics. However, I would recommend booking tickets for this in advance as it does get pretty booked up. For the spectator type, grab a hot drink, and then hang around the edge, hoping you’ll catch that great shot of a friend or relative stacking it on the ice.

Full of adrenalin, I felt the need to sit down and find my feet again and so explored the large variety of eateries. I finally settled on a large chilly dog (German), washed down by a hot chocolate – which perhaps wasn’t the best concoction!

Feeling refreshed and ready for more, I headed to Zippos Circus featuring Cirque Berserk. The Circus Master was the mad professor type, taking the crowd through a series of daredevil acts. The finale was and still remains totally mind blowing. How four motorbike riders manage to race around in such a small globe is truly remarkable…but then I suppose they had left their knowledge boards at home!

In need of further nourishment (I’m a growing lad) I made for one of the doughnut stalls, and bought a good stash to fill me up for my journey. Reflecting with my family and friends, we realised what a great time we’d had and how quickly the whole evening had passed. Something like this only comes around once a year, so make sure you take that well-earned break and head to the only London attraction that is completely free this Christmas! (Well the entry is anyway). The entrance is on south carriage drive by queen mothers gate.

Taxi and Private Hire TradeOpen Forums

The Taxi & Private Hire (TPH) directorate of Transport for London (TfL) regularly engages and communicates with representatives within the taxi and private hire trades as well as responding to and meeting with individual taxi and private hire drivers, vehicle owners and private hire operators.

We accept that regular, effective communication with licence holders from both the taxi and private hire trade is very important and we should continually look to improve communications where we can. In addition to our regular meetings, newsletter, email, Twitter feed, normal formal notice process and circulation lists we are looking to further improve the direct engagement across both trades have with us to ensure we provide regular ways in which licensees can communicate directly with me and the TPH team over issues that affect the trades.

As part of this ongoing engagement, TPH recently trialled a twitter Q&A session with senior members of the TPH team. This will become a regular feature on the @tfltph twitter account. In addition I am pleased to announce that we are establishing regular open forums in which any licensee or trade representative can attend sessions to raise issues, questions and concerns they may have.

These forums will take place every 1 – 2 months and will alternate between the taxi and private hire trades. A panel consisting of myself and key staff will attend the sessions.

The first forum will be for taxi trade representatives and will take place on 29 November and the second will be for private hire trade representatives which will be held in January 2013.

There will be space for approximately 50 attendees and attendance at each forum will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The first forum for the taxi trade, will take place on Thursday 29 November 2012 between 17:30 and 19:30.

To register your interest please email:[email protected] quoting your name, badge num-ber and licence area (please state if All London).

Second phase of consultation on options for river crossings in east and south east

London begins

• New tunnel and vehicle ferry to boost regeneration and ease congestion

• Public encouraged to share views at: www.tfl.gov.uk/rivercrossings by 1 February 2013

Transport for London (TfL) has launched the second phase of a public consultation on a proposed package of new river crossings between east and south east London. Following an initial consultation in February of this year TfL has further developed the proposals for new vehicle river crossings, with options including a new road tunnel at Silvertown and a vehicle ferry at Gallions Reach. TfL received nearly 4,000 responses to the initial consultation, and over 90 per cent of those who responded agreed there is a need for more river crossings in east and south east London. TfL has used the responses from the last consultation to develop the proposals further and is now encouraging the public and stakeholders to provide further comments on these proposals and any other alternatives they may wish to comment on. Those who wish to express their views are asked to visit www.tfl.gov.uk/rivercrossings. The proposed river crossings are designed to make the area more attractive to live, visit, and do business by reducing delays and making journey times more reliable. Alongside the considerable investment already in place on the rail network, including the delivery of Crossrail, these additional crossings will support the continued growth and regeneration of east and south east London. The proposed new road tunnel would run underneath the River Thames connecting the Royal Docks with the Greenwich Peninsula. It would relieve pressure on the existing Blackwall Tunnel and would provide an alternate route across the river. The Silvertown Tunnel would be designed to carry all sizes of vehicles, including buses. This would help to alleviate the closures caused by over-height vehicles attempting to use the Blackwall Tunnel. In addition it would support the future development of these opportunity areas, which have the potential to accommodate 13,000 new jobs and 24,500 new homes over the next 20 years. In June this year the Secretary of State for Transport designated the Silvertown Tunnel a ‘Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project.’ The decision, following an application by the Mayor, means that the overall timescale required to secure

Transport for London

Page 33: TCO10 For Web

33

all necessary approvals, could be reduced considerably enabling TfL to conduct a more structured and simpler planning process. The proposed vehicle ferry would provide a river crossing linking Beckton directly with Thamesmead at Gallions Reach, providing a much better connection, particularly for business related traffic. The Gallions Reach Ferry could replace the Woolwich Ferry, offering a better frequency of service and increased capacity. It would take about 10 minutes to cross the Thames, including boarding time. A ferry at Gallions Reach would also have more space for vehicles waiting to board and this would allow queuing traffic to be managed more effectively, preventing ferry traffic delaying vehicles on the surrounding road network. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “This river crossings package has been proposed for two reasons, to address problems that exist at the Blackwall Tunnel and with the Woolwich Ferry, and to support the real opportunity for jobs and growth in east and south east London. We welcome Londoners views in helping to shape these transport options which we hope will both improve the current situation and boost future development. Subject to planning permission, funding and other consents being granted, the earliest opening date for the proposed river crossings are 2017 for the Gallions Reach Ferry and 2021 for the Silvertown Tunnel. This consultation will look at the locations of the river crossing in much more detail with the aim of creating more direct routes with less congestion surrounding the entries and exits. The crossings in the area are under significant strain, with delays at the Blackwall Tunnel averaging 20 minutes per vehicle during the morning peak. Currently there are only a few routes for vehicles to choose from and some of those create indirect journeys across the river costing businesses money and time and discouraging investment. Width restriction at the Rotherhithe Tunnel and height restrictions at the Blackwall Tunnel further reduce the options available to vehicles. Both the Blackwall Tunnel and Woolwich Ferry are incredibly vulnerable to closure because

of their age and design. The new river crossings proposed would address these problems. This consultation will also look at a range of funding options for the river crossings, including Community Infrastructure Levy, and the possibility and benefits of tolling. TfL Director of Planning, Michele Dix, said: “The propos-als for new river crossings reflect TfL’s commitment to supporting economic development and population growth in east and south east London – one of the key objectives of the Mayor’s Transport Strategy. As well as the delivery of very significant public transport improvements providing better connections across the Thames in south and south east London for our customers, we have also recently delivered the Emirates Air Line to enable pedestrians and cyclists to cross the River Thames. However, with London’s population set to grow by 1.2m people in the next 20 years, we recognise the importance that will be placed on transporting goods and services and that is why this additional road infrastructure is so vital.” The consultation closes on Friday 1 February 2013 and the public are encouraged to share their views at www.tfl.gov.uk/rivercrossings. The consultation website will have more detailed information about the background and development of the river crossings package, and a printed information leaflet can be requested by calling 0843 222 1234. TfL will then review the responses and provide a report on the findings to the Mayor. A further, more detailed consultation could then take place in late 2013.

Victoria Station taxi rank – late night marshals

Following the relocation of the taxi rank at Victoria Station to Hudson’s Place there have been problems with Gatwick Ex-press passengers who arrive at the station between 12.30am and 4.30am accessing the new taxi rank. To help ensure that Gatwick Express passengers reach the new taxi rank between 12:30am and 04:30 marshals are now in place at the station forecourt and Little Ben Island to direct passengers from the station to Hudson’s Place. The marshals started work on Monday 5 November and have been success-fully directing passengers to the Hudson’ Place taxi rank. The marshals will be in place whilst additional signage from the sta-tion to the taxi rank in Hudson’s Place is prepared and installed. Taxi drivers should use the taxi rank in Hudson’s Place late at night so as Gatwick Express passengers being directed there can get a taxi.

It’s been an exciting month in Moggy Mansions, there’s lots to tell, so I’ll leave talking about the weather until we’re really properly cold!

My metaphorical cigar

Last week I proudly rolled onto the forecourt of Charing Cross Station, completing the 320 runs prescribed by our illustrious bible – the Blue Book. It was a great feeling, and as I cruised down the Kingsway I got a bit misted up thinking how far I had come from those baby steps all fresh faced and naïve. I remembered leaving Manor House Station on the left (although I did pass St Ann’s Road on the right before I realised my first mistake), like it was yesterday, as I sailed past Parker Street, missing my turning again. Nothing changes.

Whilst I languished below the Eleanor Cross feeling a little bit smug, I was congratulated by a cabbie, which made me even prouder. I was soon joined by Neil from St Albans, who had also just completed his runs. It was nice to be able to share my accomplishment, I wonder how many people finish there each day. But as I left, notably NOT consulting the map because apparently I now know it all, I felt a familiar lost and slightly overwhelming sinking feeling. There is still the small matter of two and a half thousand points still to find, and that’s just for starters.

I should point out that I am not using any particular school’s methods, and have no affiliation to any school. This is because no school precisely fits what I can do given my circumstances – I

need to be flexible with when and where I can learn, but also I don’t think I could stomach doing all the radiuses with the runs – I would quickly get disheartened and surely forget all those unused points. Also, I only vaguely knew my way around town when I started – Dulwich may as well have been on the moon, so just doing the runs was a good way to get orientated. This being said, Mr Moggy, (who is happily sitting at six points on his 21’s – well done!) did all the radii successfully, but I think he has more patience and a more thorough way of thinking than me. More practically, the college with the “way” most appropriate to me is a good hour and half commute so I can’t see me getting my money’s worth if I actually joined.

My way or the high way?

In spite of not actually joining a college, I have experience of several of them, from going to initiation sessions and doing courses, and speaking to several different teachers. In my humble experience, what they all have in common is a sense that they and they alone are right. That their way is by far the best or only way to get through, and they all have it on good authority from their examiner “friends” and have the best insight from the PCO. They are all faintly evangelical about their “way,” and quite rightly they should too – the Knowledge, in whatever way you attempt it, takes a great deal of faith. You often just need to believe that what you are doing is right, even if it doesn’t seem it, so that you can just keep going. Joining a school that has had however many people pass doing it “their way” must be terribly comforting.

MOGGY’SMENTION

Page 35: TCO10 For Web

35

I don’t happen to have that luxury, and each person’s circumstances are different. If you are lucky enough to be full time, or you have family members doing or done it, how much you know to begin with, how your brain works – thorough/anal or relaxed/slapdash, how quickly you take it in. All these factor in on your methods. I am a firm believer in mixing and matching, and surely using the methods that suit your own circumstances. Just have faith in whatever you’re doing!

Pointless and Pointing Right, back to where I am – pointing. What I intend to do is cover the quarter miles, but in a different order than how the schools prescribe, using photocopied map pages, and as up to date points information as possible – doing the points asked a lot of times first. I have already had a few days out and am still settling into it – it is difficult not to treat it as a treasure hunt, ticking them off as fast as possible. I’m learning I don’t take them in that way, and it is also important to me to revise consistently. I won’t be covering junctions too thoroughly or making too many notes, I’d rather have the information in my head than in a folder. If anyone has any good pointing tips for a noob like me, pass them on!

Help is at Hand

Whatever “way” you are using, you will undoubtedly need to be using points from POINT SHEETS to start calling over. You can even use this information as a basis for your pointing in the first place. Luckily for me, The Callover has just introduced it’s own point sheets. They are in an easy to use format, listed in Appearance order, there are early and late sheets, and best of all, they’re FREE. This is perfect for those like me who have resisted joining a college and so would have to pay just for emailed sheets. Make sure you subscribe now to get this essential benefit.

Before I go, I have noticed a definitely increase in the amount of nods and waves I have got and given recently, so I can only assume the Two Wheeled Solidarity Campaign is a roaring success! I will give you all a month off homework to celebrate! Stay Lucky,

Mog

tions can be the best way to find an ac-countant however you should still ask ques-tions to ensure you are 100% comfortable. Do you get on with your accountant and do they take an interest in you and your busi-ness? Accountants are not all boring as the stereotype suggests. A good accountant will want to know about you and your business. If you think you are just £££ to your ac-countant then they are not right for you!

Can I do it myself?

Yes, any accountant that says no isn’t being honest. However, a good accountant will know the allowances and correct expenses you can claim, this should save you more in the long run, ensuring you claim everything you are entitled to but without over claim-ing expenses that could spark an expensive HMRC investigation!

Do I need to be VAT Registered?

Currently if you take more than £77,000 more in fares per year then you should be VAT Registered. In some cases you may be better off as a VAT Registered business and this should be calculated by an accountant.

How Tax-i-fficient are you?

Edward Slater has been a member of the Institute of Chartered Account-ants in England & Wales since 1974. He is now offering his expertise to all Callover readers on a monthly basis and is open to all your questions, no matter how trivial they may seem!

Please forward any question to [email protected]. We will then anonymously select three questions to be answered each month by Ed-

How do I tell HMRC I am a cabby?

You need to complete a CWF1 form to tell HMRC you are working for yourself. This must be done within three months to avoid penalties! You will also need to complete a CA5601 form to register to pay Class 1 National Insurance which is currently £2.65 per week. These can be pro-vided by your accountant or online at www.hmrc.gov.uk

What expenses can I claim?

There is no definitive rule about what you can and cannot claim, and much of it depends on circumstances. The general rule is you can claim for anything that is used wholly and partially for the trade. There are exceptions to this and HMRC do allow dispensations and allowances that can be claimed, most accountants should be aware of these.

What tax will I pay?

This depends on how much you earn and how much you work. Each year you have a tax free allowance, after that there are different stages in the level of income tax, ranging from 20% to 50%. You also have to pay National Insurance contributions which start at 8% but fall to 1% over certain income levels.

When do I have to pay tax?

The tax year runs to the 5th April every year, although you may make your yearly accounts up to a different date. Any tax payable is then due on the following 31st January. If your tax and national insurance for the year totals more than £1,000 you will be asked to make an additional payment of 50% on 31st January, with another 50% payment on 31st July on account of the fol-lowing years tax.

Do I have to declare all my income / cash?

Yes, unless you want to be on the receiving end of HMRC. You may have read in the news about the £8billion deficit from tax evasion and HMRC are not letting it go easily. This year they have launched a new offensive on small to me-dium size businesses, especially where cash is involved. This year alone they expect their task-forces to bring in unpaid taxes of £24 million!

How long should I keep my records?

HMRC normally make random enquiries on tax returns within a few months from when they

were filed, if they are satisfied with your an-swers it is unlikely they will search more. HMRC suggest that you should keep records for a minimum of 5 years, however they can en-quire into your tax affairs up to 20 years previ-ous (in extreme cases indefinitely).

What records should I keep?

You must keep all records relevant to your ac-counts and tax return. Your accountant will need these to prepare your accounts and they should identify what needs to be kept. You should file everything together, clearly labelling the year it relates too. Your accountant will be used to this and can help you with this.

What should I look for in an accountant?

Like many professions, you do not have to be qualified to be an accountant. You can identify an accountant through designatory letters after their name or using a logo or association name on their stationery. The most common in the UK for this type of accounting are ACA (Member of the Institute of Chartered Account-ants in England and Wales) and ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Account-ants), there are many others and if unsure an internet search should assist.

Although being qualified doesn’t guarantee quality, there are many very good unqualified accountants, qualified members must follow guidelines set by their professional body, ensur-ing professionalism. Members of professional bodies are regularly checked, and should a com-plaint be made they can be struck off and or fined.

Outside of the obvious qualifications are the “other” questions, ones that you may never think to ask but are very important:

Does the accountant have a Professional Indem-nity Insurance Policy? If not, should the ac-countant make an error, there is no guarantee you would receive compensation! Is the accountant registered as an “Accountancy Service Provider” with HM Revenue & Customs? If not, then HMRC do not recognise the ac-countant giving you advice! Does the accountant come recommended from a friend or trade body? Personal recommenda-
