    maintenance. It breaks down each maintenance task into a series ofstep-by-step instructions, and tells you what tools and materials are required.The handbook covers the following equipment configurations:

    1 Safety Rules and Precautions

    This chapter contains the following safety rules and precautions:

    Safety rules for equipment under power

    Electrostatic precautions.

    Injury from EquipmentPossible death or serious physical harm to personnel and damage to equipmentmay result from mishandling.While performing any maintenance tasks or procedures, you must follow anylocal safety requirements, and those mentioned in General Safety Instructionsfor Field Operations and this chapter.

  • 1 Safety Rules and Precautions

    1.1 Safety Rules for Equipment Under PowerFor maintenance purposes, field operators may have to work on equipmentunder power (-48 VDC or -60 VDC). This means that it is possible to touchsome parts under power, that are only protected by heavy fuses. Maintenanceactivities must be carried out carefully to avoid short circuits and to preventserious personal injury.Remove all conductive objects from the hands, such as rings, bracelets,metallic wrist watches and so on. Use appropriate insulated tools formaintenance activities.

    1.2 Electrostatic PrecautionsThe following electrostatic precautions must be observed:

    1.2.1 Environment

    Ensure that work benches, stools, and floor mats have a conducting surfaceconnected to ground. Before handling static-sensitive components andassemblies, ground yourself to the conducting surface using an anti-staticwrist strap.

    When handling static-sensitive components and assemblies, do not wearor use clothes made of wool, nylon or any other synthetic material. Suchfabrics are major sources of static build-up.When handling static-sensitive components and assemblies, do not usegloves and finger covers, unless they are made of cotton.

    1.2.2 Tools

    Ensure that all the tools which come into contact with static-sensitivecomponents are at the same voltage level as the conducting work surfacesand floor mats.These tools include soldering irons, oscilloscopes, power supplies, andmetal parts of tools and fixtures that are used to hold, assemble or test PBAs.

    Do not use rough cleaners or erasers to clean the gold-plated contactson PBAs.

    Do not mark a PBA with a lead pencil or any other writing instrument.

    Do not use synthetic brushes to clean equipment, and do not use drycleaning methods.

    1.2.3 Transportation and StoragePack all containers used to transport and store static-sensitive components,and use aluminium container tubes if possible. If not, insert the componentterminations into electrically conductive foam.

    Before shipping a PBA, wrap it in a conducting synthetic bag or in aluminiumfoil. Also pack the PBA in a polyethylene transport box.

    Before shipping a PBA which has MOS components, ensure that anappropriate warning symbol is displayed on the package.

    Store spare PBAs in their appropriate polyethylene boxes. Keep the boxesclosed except when access to their contents is required.

    Do not store PBAs in an area where the air is polluted with smoke, dust,dangerous gases or other air-borne particles that may cause damage.

    Do not stack PBAs side-by-side or on top of each other with the boardsurfaces or components in contact with one another.

    Before cleaning a PBA, remove or disconnect the damage protection, suchas protective foam, to allow the PBA to be cleaned thoroughly. Replace thedamage protection upon completion of the task.

    1.2.4 Components and PBAsComponents and PBAs not in protective containers, must only be handledby trained personnel in static-controlled work areas.

    Before removing a PBA from an equipment rack, discharge any static bytouching the metal frame of the rack with your hand.

    Always handle a PBA by the edges.

    Do not handle or carry a PBA by any of the mounted components.

    Do not handle a PBA by the gold-plated contact terminals and do not applydirect pressure to the components.

    Do not touch PBA connection pins or conductor paths.

    Do not touch PBAs with wet hands.

    Place PBAs that have been removed during maintenance with the solderedside downwards on a conductive surface.

    Do not scratch or rub the soldered side of a PBA with a sharp or roughobject.Do not repair PBAs in the switch room.

    Do not handle components and assemblies by their leads.

    Do not use excessive force when inserting connection boards.

    1.2.5 Handling Optical Fiber DevicesDepending on installed options the equipment may contain fiber optic devicesthat can radiate laser beams:

    Do not look directly in the laser beam

    Take into account that infrared laser radiation is not visible. Additional labelscan be added to classify the laser.

    Respect the warnings given by labels provided on equipment.

    1.2.6 Handling Coaxial and Optical Fiber CablesWhen handling coaxial or optical fiber cables:

    Do not cut coaxial or optical fiber cables to adjust the cable length.Do not bend to tighten the coaxial or optical fiber cable.Furthermore, for handling coaxial or optical fiber cables respect the cablemanufacturer specifications.

    2.1 Before You Start to Replace Transmission RITsRead this section before starting the procedure in this chapter.

    2.1.1 PrerequisitesNote the following conditions. You must:

    Have read Chapter 1 before performing any maintenance procedures.

    Be familiar with electrostatic precautions. Refer to Section ElectrostaticPrecautions (Section 1.2) for more information.Know the location of the RIT to be replaced.The location of the RIT to be replaced is defined in terms of the site,cabinet, shelf and slot position. This information is obtained from the 9153OMC-R operator.

    Establish an efficient means of communication with an 9153 OMC-Roperator in order to lock (disable) and unlock (initialize) the appropriateMO (SBL) when required.

    2.1.2 Tools and MaterialsYou must have:

    An anti-static wrist strap

    A TSC terminal to configure the RIT

    A serviceable replacement RIT with an identical part number.

    2.1.3 Impact on SystemReplacing a RIT causes alarms to be sent to the 9153 OMC-R. If thereplacement RIT clears a fault condition, the corresponding alarmsautomatically clears after a short delay. If the replaced board carries trafficthere will be a traffic reduction during the replacement.

    2.1.4 RestrictionsNone.

    2.2 Replace Transmission RITsThe following table lists the Transmission RITs.

    To replace a transmission RIT:1. At the equipment site, locate the position of the faulty RIT.2. If appropriate, disconnect the front panel cables from the RIT, carefully

    noting their positions for re-connection.3. Connect the anti-static wrist strap.4. Unlock the retaining clips on the RIT.5. Carefully disengage the RIT from the backplane and fully withdraw it from

    the slot.

    Backplane DamageDo not use excessive force when inserting the RIT.

    6. Push the replacement RIT fully into the empty slot ensuring that pins andsockets are correctly aligned.

    7. Lock the retaining clips on the RIT.8. Disconnect the anti-static wrist strap.9. Replace any front panel connectors removed in Step 2 .

    10. Use the terminal to download the configuration data.11. Disconnect the terminal.12. Record the state of the LEDs on the replacement RIT when they are stable.13. Inform the 9153 OMC-R operator that the faulty RIT has been replaced,

    and report the state of the LEDs.

    This chapter tells you how to replace 9125 TC RITs.It contains procedures for replacing the following RITs:

    MT120

    MT120 WB

    MT120 NB

    TCIF

    Fan cassettes.

    3.1 Replace MT120In the 9125 TC rack there are only 9125 TC Transcoding Boards for Ater-E1(MT120).The 9125 TC is structured in four subracks, each containing up to twelveMT120.There are three types of MT120 boards: MT120 (legacy), MT120 WideBand(WB) and MT120 NarrowBand (NB).The following procedure applies for all types of MT120 boards.The part number of the MT120 board is:

    3BK 08882 xx for MT120 legacy

    3BK 27897 xx for MT120 WB

    3BK 28280 xx for MT120 NB.

    There are two means to perform a MT120 board replacement on the 9125TC rack:

    The first is by using the Replace Command on the TC NEM. This commandis used to ease the replacement procedure; the actions of the operator arelimited to the strict necessary. The only constraint is that the TC NEM mustbe able to retrieve the current configuration of the MT120 board to replace(this includes the SW version and the configuration parameters to run theMT120). For details see Replace a Board in 9125 TC NEM User Guide.The second means to replace the MT120 is needed when the TC NEMcannot retrieve the current configuration of the board to replace.

    3.1.1 Tools and MaterialsYou must have a TC NEM and an:

    RS-232 asynchronous communication link cable to connect it to a MT120legacy board (3BK 07951 AA)Ethernet crossed cable to connect it to a MT120 NB/WB board.

    Only one TC-NEM application should be connected to the TC rack at one time,regardless of the software management mode of the MT120 boards.If the MT120 boards are running in:

    TCIL management mode, only one TC-NEM can be connected (via MMIor Serial) to the TC rackHSI, management mode, only one TC-NEM can be connected (via IP)to the TC rack at a time.

    3.1.2 Impact on SystemAll telecommunications resources of the MT120 board to be replaced arelost during replacement procedure.

    In order to reduce the outage, make sure that the board used for replacement isloaded with the correct software version. If it is not the case, download therequired software version before starting the replacement.

    3.1.3 Procedure 1

    Note: This procedure must be used when replacing a board by a similar one (MT120by MT120, MT120 WB by MT120 WB or MT120 NB by MT120 NB).

    3.1.3.1 MT120 in TCIL or no Direct Connection to the BoardTo replace a MT120 board using the Replacement Command:1. Unlock and open the front door of the TC rack.2. Connect the TC NEM to the TC rack; connection to any MT120 board with

    no autotest failure, indicated by a permanent red LED.3. Execute the MT120 board replacement command on TC NEM. For details

    see Replace a Board in 9125 TC NEM User Guide.

    Retrieve of DataIf the TC NEM can retrieve the current configuration of the MT120 board toreplace the command continues. Otherwise the operator must perform amanual replacement of theboard (see procedure 2).

    4. The operator must check that the PCM links of the MT120 he wants toremove carry no telecom traffic (indicated by the link connection statusDISCONNECTED on the display) (recommended).

    5. Unbolt the MT120 board. As there is no disable command, carefully extractthe MT120 board from the backplane and fully withdraw it from the slot.

    6. Replace it by a new one of the same type.

    Backplane DamageDo not use excessive force when inserting the new MT120 board.

    7. Follow the replacement procedure.8. After the new board is up and running, make sure that the [ Connect ] button

    of the TC-NEM is pressed in order to continue the procedure using theReplacement Wizard dialog box.

    9. At the TC NEM check the Qmux clusters and MT120 mapping.10. Set up the MT120 Remote Inventory (e.g. commissioning date, network

    identity, logical site name, etc.). For details see Modify the Remote Inventoryin 9125 TC NEM User Guide.

    11. Disconnect the TC NEM.12. Shut the front door of the TC rack and lock it.

    3.1.3.2 MT120 in HSI or MT120 in TCIL with Direct Connection to the BoardTo replace a MT120 board which is running in HSI management mode ( orMT120 in TCIL with direct connection available) :1. Unlock and open the front door of the TC rack.2. Using a direct connection (serial cable for MT120 legacy or Ethernet

    crossed cable for MT120 NB/WB board), physically connect to the board tobe replaced.

    3. Start the TC-NEM on serial (for MT120 legacy) or MMI (for MT120 NB/WB)connection.

    4. Execute the MT120 board replacement command on TC NEM. For detailssee Replace a Board in 9125 TC NEM User Guide.

    5. The operator must check that the PCM links of the MT120 he wants toremove carry no telecom traffic (indicated by the link connection statusDISCONNECTED on the display) (recommended).

    check its IP address

    configure TC NEM PC Ethernet network interface so as the IP addressof the TC NEM PC is in the same subnetwork with the IP address ofthe new MT120 NB/WB board

    start the TC-NEM on MMI connection using the IP address of the newMT120 NB/WB board.

    9. After the new board is up and running, make sure that the [ Connect ] buttonof the TC-NEM is pressed in order to continue the procedure using theReplacement Wizard dialog box.

    10. At the TC NEM check the Qmux clusters and MT120 mapping.

    Note: Even if the new board is running in TCIL mode and the old one was running inHSI mode, at the end of the replacement the new board will be running in HSIwithout any Change Mode command necessary.

    11. Set up the MT120 Remote Inventory (e.g. commissioning date, networkidentity, logical site name, etc.). For details see Modify the Remote Inventoryin 9125 TC NEM User Guide.

    12. Disconnect the TC NEM.13. Shut the front door of the TC rack and lock it.

    3.1.4 Procedure 2

    Note: This procedure must be used when replacing a board by a different one (MT120by MT120 NB, MT120 by MT120 WB, MT120 WB by MT120, MT120 WB byMT120 NB, MT120 NB by MT120 or MT120 NB by MT120 WB).

    In case a MT120 legacy must be replaced by a MT120 NB/WB, before insertingthe MT120 NB/WB in the rack, all the MT120 legacy boards must be upgradedto the software version that will run on the MT120 NB/WB board.

    The following two cases describe how to replace manually a MT120 board:

    G2 TC and 9125 TC not equipped with STM1-IP subrack

    9125 TC rack equipped with STM1-IP subrack.

    3.1.4.1 Replace MT120 Board for G2 TC and 9125 TC not Equipped with STM1-IPSubrack

    To replace a MT120 board manually if the Replacement Command is notpossible:1. Unlock and open the front door of the TC rack.2. Connect the TC NEM to the TC rack, connection to any MT120 board with

    no autotest failure, indicated by a permanent red LED.For more information how to connect TC NEM to G2/9125 TC see Log On in9125 Transcoder NEM User Guide.

    3. Check that the PCM links of the MT120 that you want to remove carry notelecom traffic (indicated by the link connection status DISCONNECTED onthe display).

    4. Unbolt the MT120 board. As there is no disable command, carefully extractthe MT120 board from the backplane and fully withdraw it from the slot.

    5. If a MT120 board is replaced by a MT120-NB/WB board, before replacingthe MT120 board by a MT120-NB/WB board, all the MT120 boards in therack must be upgraded to the software version that will run also on theMT120-NB/WB. For details see Download Software via TCC and ActivateSoftware from TCC in 9125 Transcoder NEM User Guide.If a MT120-NB/WB board is replaced by a MT120 board, go to next step.

    6. Replace the faulty board by a new one.

    7. Check software version of the replacement board. For details see View theSoftware Inventory in 9125 Transcoder NEM User Guide.

    8. If a MT120 board was replaced by a MT120-NB/WB board and if thesoftware version on the MT120-NB/WB is MTXBAX36.36A or older, or itis not up to date, download new software and activate it. For details seeDownload Software via TCC and Activate Software from TCC in 9125Transcoder NEM User Guide.If a MT120-NB/WB board was replaced by a MT120 board and if thesoftware version in not as requested, download new software and activate it.

    9. Set up the MT120 Remote Inventory (e.g. commissioning date, networkidentity, logical site name, etc.).

    10. Set up the fans/rack Remote Inventory.11. Configure the new MT120 for operational mode (i.e. enter for the new MT120

    the configuration parameters especially the BSC number and the Atermuxnumber for the Qmux cluster setting).

    12. If the new board is running in HSI mode, using a direct connection (serialcable for MT120 legacy or Ethernet crossed cable for MT120 NB/WB) ,change its management mode to TCIL.

    13. Disconnect the TC NEM.14. Shut the front door of the TC rack and lock it.15. Load configuration on MT120 board:

    3.1.4.2 Replace MT120 Board in 9125 TC Equipped with STM1-IP SubrackTo replace an MT120 board manually if the Replacement Command is notpossible:1. Unlock and open the front door of the TC rack.2. Connect the TC NEM to the TC rack, connection to active TCIF board.

    For more information how to connect TC NEM to 9125 TC see Log On in9125 Transcoder NEM User Guide.

    3. Check that the PCM links of the MT120 that you want to remove carry notelecom traffic (indicated by the link connection status DISCONNECTED onthe display).

    4. Unbolt the MT120 board. As there is no disable command, carefully extractthe MT120 board from the backplane and fully withdraw it from the slot.

    5. If a MT120 board is replaced by a MT120-NB/WB board, before replacingthe MT120 board by a MT120-NB/WB board, all the MT120 boards in therack must be upgraded to the software version that will run also on theMT120-NB/WB.     check its IP address

    configure TC NEM PC Ethernet network interface so as the IP addressof the TC NEM PC is in the same subnetwork with the IP address ofthe new MT120 NB/WB board

    start the TC-NEM on MMI connection using the IP address of the newMT120 NB/WB board.

    8. Check software version. For details see View the Software Inventory in9125 Transcoder NEM User Guide.

    9. If the software version is not up to date, download new software and activateit. For details see Download MT120 Software and Activate MT120 Softwarein 9125 Transcoder NEM User Guide.

    10. Set up the MT120 Remote Inventory (e.g. commissioning date, networkidentity, logical site name, etc.).

    11. Set up the fans/rack Remote Inventory.12. Configure the new MT120 for operational mode (i.e. enter for the new MT120

    2. In "BSSUSM : Main View" window, from "HW Equipment View right click onthe concerned MT120 board and Lock it.

    2. If the faulty (standby) TCIF board can be locked from TC-NEM:From TC-NEM lock the standby board.Wait until this board becomes red in TC NEM "Rack Overview" window.

    Unplug the optical fiber connectors and remove the faulty board fromthe subrack

    Insert the new board in the same slot

    Power ON the new board (push the metallic lever on the right side).The blue LED switches OFF.Wait for about 8 minutes in order for this new board to power up.

    Stop the heartbeat process:/opt/heartbeat-2.1.2/init.d/heartbeat stop

    When the heartbeat process is stopped, there will be no other processrunning (hsid, saed, oaed, mmirelay, qmux_forwarder, and in.tftpd areautomatically stopped).Check if the logd is present:

    /opt/tcifR-1.1/init.d/logd status

    Stop the logd process, if present:/opt/tcifR-1.1/init.d/logd stop

    Check that all other processes are stopped also:ps eaf | grep tcif

    Delete files:cd /mnt/flash/rm rf *rm rf .snmprm rf .net-snmp

    Check there is no file in /mnt/flash directory:ls -altr /mnt/flash

    Check there is no application installed and running:ps eaf

    Reboot the TCIF board by typing:reboot

    Make sure that the serial connection to the RS port on the front panel of theTCIF board is removed.Wait for about 8 minutes until the reboot is finished.

    3.2.4 Install the New BoardTo install the new board:1. Connect the Ethernet crossed cable between the ETH connectors on the

    front panel of the two TCIF boards.2. Establish again the serial connectin on the new TCIF board.

    See Step 2 from Remove the Faulty Board (Section 3.2.3.3).3. On the serial connection to the new board, enter:

    dhcpcd eth2chown HDEV -R /mnt/flashchown HDEV -R /usr/libchown HDEV /dev/mtd1

    4. Write down the new board eth2_ip address, it will be used later on duringthe procedure.

    This new board eth2_ip address must be from the same subnetwork as the onegiven in TC-NEM in the "IP Conf" window in Internal IP Network Address field.

    5. If this is not the case, perform a reboot of the new board, by typing:reboot

    Make sure that the serial connection to the RS port on the front panel of theTCIF board is removed.Wait for about 8 minutes so the board is up again and re-establish theserial connection.Enter the commands from step 3 and check that the new board eth2_ipaddress is in the same subnetwork with the Internal IP Network Address.

    6. Remove the serial cable from the new board.

    Make sure that no serial cable is connected on the front panel of the activeTCIF board.

    7. Open a putty session, on the active TCIF board:

    Launch putty.exeA PuTTY Configuration window opens

    In the Protocol area select

    Complete the Host Name (or IP address) field with TCIF IP addresswhere:

    This procedure takes about 40 minutes.When the board replacement script is finished, the active TCIF board willautomatically trigger the reboot of the new board.The reboot starts only when Reset standby board and Reset donemessages appear.Wait about 8 minutes for the board to be up and running.

    13. Plug in the RS cable back in the new board.The login message is available on the serial connection.

    14. Log in as:Username: rootPassword: tcif

    15. On serial connection check that the processes are up. See Step 5 fromCheck the Status of the Active TCIF Board (Section 3.2.3.1).The starting of the processes will take about 5 minutes.

    16. On serial connection check the firmware version on the STM-1 daughterboard of the new TCIF board. See Check the Firmware Version of theSTM-1 Daughter Board on the Active TCIF (Section 3.2.3.2) for details.

    17. Remove the Ethernet crossed cable connected between the ETH2 connectorof the two TCIF boards.

    18. Plug the Ethernet (straight) cable at the back panel, to connectorscorresponding to the replaced TCIF board.

    19. Unplug the RS cable from the front panel.

    Be sure, that on the front panel no RS cables remains connected.

    3.3.1 Tools and MaterialsYou must have a TC NEM and an RS-232 asynchronous communication linkcable to connect it to an MT120 board.

    3.3.2 Impact on SystemThe FANU can be replaced by hot-swapping (no power supply switched off),and there is no loss of telecommunications resources.

    3.3.3 ProcedureTo replace a FANU:1. Unlock and open the front door of the TC rack2. Connect the TC NEM to the TC rack3. Start the program of the TC NEM; use the TCC window to locate the

    defective fan cassette.4. Unbolt the latch at the front to release the FANU, and then pull it out from

    the backplanel and fully withdraw it from the slot.Replace it by a new one. Check that the latch snaps into the locked position.
