thyroid & Lifeworks

an estimated 27 million Americans have Thyroid disease, and worryingly,

more than half are misdiagnosed. Why is this?

Dr. George Springer of LifeWorks Wellness Center explains, “The majority of physicians only order standard blood work which reports TSH, T4 and maybe T3 (thyroid hormone) levels and these tests do not give a complete picture of the thyroid. Nor do they tell if the thyroid hormone is being effectively used by a patient’s body. This is why lab numbers may look good, but the patient may still be exhibiting all the symptoms of thyroid disease.” For the month of March, LifeWorks is offering new patients

an exclusive discount of $75 off a consultation with Dr. Springer, a practitioner who has built a very solid reputation for finding out what is really going on with his patients’ thyroid gland. So, if you have thyroid issues but they are un- resolved, or if you suspect your thyroid may not be functioning properly, then take advantage of this special today.

This offer is valid from March 1-29, 2013 and applies to new patients only.

To book an appointment, call Tamora at 727-466-6789 and for more information about the clinic visit www.lifeworkswellnesscenter.com. LifeWorks is located at 301Turner Street, Clearwater, FL.

Achieving Health andWell-Being Through

Ayurvedic Medicine: An Interview with Jayam Iyer M.D.

Complementary healing practices, traditional medicine, compassion, wisdom—Dr. Jayam Iyer Iyer has

been providing these for residents of the Tampa Bay area for the last 28 years.

Dr. Iyer began with a desire to open a medical center that could address a variety of health needs that are sometimes otherwise overlooked by the disease-based model of traditional medicine, and that is what she has done while acting as Medical Director since 1984. “The name Creative Health Center was given to create health in the human body and also prevent disease in the future,” she explains.

In 1975 Dr. Iyer received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Calicut University Medical College in Kerela, India. She received Board Certification (C.E.S.) in Anesthesia & Critical Care in 1981 from Universite Rene Descartes in Paris, France. After furthering her education in Anesthesiology at Allegheny General

Hospital in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, she received a Diplomate from the American Board of Anesthesiology. Since 1984, she has led Creative Health Center as its Medical Director.

The goal of Dr. Iyer and her staff is to care for patients by integrating complementary healing practices with modern medicine. The focus of treatment thus extends beyond management of present ailments and symptoms, helping patients connect with their ability to heal from within. Creative Health Center began as a pain management clinic; it now offers an array of treatments, however, including Acupuncture, Microdermabrasion, Laser Facial Rejuvenation, Cellulite Reduction, HCG Weight Loss Program, Dermal Fillers Treatments, Botox Treatments, and Ayurvedic Medicine.

Creative Health Center also strives to connect digitally with the community. The Center’s website features a “Meet

Dr. Jayam Iyer” page, several pages that describe various treatment options and frequently asked questions, as well as information about first appointments. All of the reviews that Google Plus features rate Dr. Iyer and the Center as “overall excellent,” and patient comments for Creative Health Center range from “Dr. Iyer is a compassionate doctor who will sit and listen to you,” to “Dr. Iyer and the entire staff actually care about your health.” The Center’s recent decision to foray into social media has thus far proven to be a success: the Facebook page has already gained “likes” and records of users who have checked in there.

This month Dr. Iyer talks with Tampa Bay Wellness about the journey that led her to become the Medical Director of Creative Health Center, as well as the cutting-edge treatments she and the center offer through integrating Ayurvedic and traditional medicine.

Page 13: TBWellness March, 2013

coverstoryWhen was Creative Health Center formed? What motivated you to start the center?

I formed Creative Health Center in the mid-nineties—1994 or so. I was practicing as an anesthesiologist along with chronic pain management. When we treated chronic pain patients, they were not getting optimal results through the traditional way we treat patients with injections, epidurals, nerve blocks, and oral medications. That made me look into

other avenues such as acupuncture and homeopathy. Even with the acupuncture, though, people were not getting the optimum benefit they should be getting today with chronic medical conditions like fibromyalgia, migraines, chronic neck and low back pain, etc. Then I also studied age management medicine and hormone replacement. I still felt there was a deficiency—not filling all the elements to take care of the human being. That led me to studying Ayurveda.

The name Creative Health Center was given to create health in the human body and to also prevent disease in the future. Ayurveda explains that beautifully. The science of life: “ayur” means life; “veda” means science. Thus life science explains beautifully how to help sick people and how to prevent diseases in the future.

So that fits into my philosophy of Creative Health Center—creating health in the sick people and also maintaining

health in the healthy people.

What challenges did you encounter when you originally opened the center, and how did you overcome those challenges?

Challenges will be always there—many challenges, such as insurance companies. In those days [when I first studied acupuncture], acupuncture was not covered by insurance. If you give herbal medicine, herbs, or homeopathic remedies; even today those are over-the-

counter medications and not covered by insurance companies

We are facing the same challenges now with the Ayurvedic herbs. None of them will be covered.

Unfortunately, Ayurveda is not even recognized by insurance companies today, whereas acupuncture is now covered, and chiropractors have been approved for a long time. Ayurveda is like Naturopathy. If you look at Washington State, or at New Mexico, they are all covered. Florida is so behind; naturopathy is not approved. So Ayurveda has to be recognized so that we can overcome the obstacles of insurance companies approving it. Right now the main challenge is that patients have to spend out of their pocket. It’s not covered—not only the physician’s office visits, but also the consultations, much less the treatment.

Have there been any particular teachers

or mentors who have inspired you?

Coming from India, I always heard about Ayurveda, but I went to traditional medical school, so I did not know about Ayurveda.

One of my teachers—she’s called Gurumaa—is based near New Delhi. I have been associated with her since 2003. During her talks in America, she talks about Ayurveda, yoga, and the benefits. They only have a center in India which is doing very well. Many people from America have been there and gotten well. She inspired me to study Ayurveda. So I started with studying at the Kerala Ayurveda academy, based in Seattle, Washington state. I also studied Ayurveda with Deepak Chopra in 1994. I have certificates from Dr. Chopra in Creating Health.

What types of individuals can benefit from Ayurvedic Medicine?

Anybody. Actually, I don’t see any pediatrics.

In my practice, I am what they call an adult practitioner for patients 18 years and above. I know Ayurveda Pediatric Physicians, and we will refer to them.

I focus on adults. Ayurveda is good for anybody. There is no age limit.

Can you give a few examples of success stories or individuals whom you have treated?

We just finished with a group of people studying on weight loss. The study involved 30 people seen in the clinic for weight management. After discussing with each individual the benef it of ayurvedic diet and lifestyles, 15 were chosen to do Ayurveda and the other 15 chosen to do the traditional weight loss system. The total duration of the study was 8 weeks. The study’s conclusion was that Ayurveda turned out to be better than the traditional weight loss system.

What is the difference between traditional and Ayurvedic weight management?

The difference between the traditional and Ayurvedic weight management is

Page 14: TBWellness March, 2013

body type analysis. In western medicine, everybody is the

same. Ayurveda views people differently. You have to know your nature—what body type you are.

In the study, each patient was given the Ayurvedic constitution quiz to determine their type of Vata, Pitta or Kapha, along with their mental, emotional, and behavioral attributes. We gave them a diet based on their body type. Vata constitution should focus on a diet that calms, strengthens, grounds, and nourishes, eating food that is warm, moist, and heavy. Pitta constitution should focus on a diet that cools, is slightly heavy, and a little dry. Pitta constitution should also avoid fried and overly cooked food. Kapha constitution should focus on a warm diet that is light in mass and dry in texture. Kaphas are advised to avoid sweet, salty, and sour tastes. Also we ask them about their tissue. In Ayurveda there are seven tissues. . . And the excretion system, which is your sweat, your urine, and your feces, is very important in Ayurveda. Also unique to Ayurveda is that it’s not only dealing with your body; it is also considers your mind. So there is an emotional component. Behavioral questions are asked based on each Dosha.

I get all this information from them; then we find out what their body nature.

Today, in Western Medicine we get blood work, an MRI, CT Scan as needed. This is basically looking for more anatomical information. Peoples’ body types differ. You will also be answering based on what you are at this moment. Ten years from now you may change. So this is giving you what you need now, today, not what you needed ten years ago. After these questions, I see them, talk to them, and examine them. We do a basic clinical evaluation.

We also evaluate the status of agni—that is indigestion and bloating. Agni, which is not incorporated into Western medicine, is crucial. Then we recommend a diet and give them guidelines for proper digestion. Finally, we have to give a diagnosis and an evaluation of their condition right now. That is the first evaluation, which is very comprehensive.

Once they have the evaluation, the first week I give them a detoxifying anti-ama, non-toxic diet, which is based on rice and moong dal. So breakfast will be light—maybe tea, fruit, oatmeal. No eggs, sausage, or heavy products. Lunch will be rice and moong dal, and then dinner will be similar light food—not anything heavy. That is for the first week. I see them weekly.

For traditional western medicine, we gave them their diet. We only told them proportions: 25% water, 25% protein, 25% vegetable, 8% fat, 8% carbs, and 8% fruit. They also came for amino acid injections on a weekly basis. We told them to exercise. Traditional people went to the gym, did muscle toning, or went on the treadmill.

We gave the Ayurvedic patients specific exercises called yoga exercises. We also taught them a breathing technique for forceful exhalation. They also got medicine, an ayurvedic supplement. We encouraged them to go to yoga

coverstorystudios. On our website we have yoga for vata, pitta, kapha. This was optional; it was not mandated. With yoga you are synchronizing your movements to the breath, which is not normally done in the western medicine.

The traditional people lost 6 pounds in two months. The Ayurvedic lost 12 pounds in two months.

Did any of the participants report additional benefits besides weight loss?

They reported several additional benefits: sleeping good, having more energy, having better days; their life is turned around because they were able to fall into the natural rhythm of life. They feel more at peace with themselves, and they are more balanced. They are good to others too.

What other types of treatment care are especially popular and successful at Creative Health Center?

Our second best treatment care here is for skin conditions.

Unfortunately, skin is not skin deep. In Ayurveda, skin is only part of the bigger problem. In Ayurveda, skin is utilized as the biggest organ of elimination. There are people coming to us with acne, a lot of different skin conditions, dry skin, oily skin, skin spots, aging spots, and sun damage.

Traditionally we have many treatments for people that had been using chemical peels and then retinol creams; laser t reatments are a lso ver y popu lar. Unfortunately, al l those treatments only address the superficial part. The uniqueness of Ayurveda is that it treats you from the inside out.

How do you treat cases of allergies?

A l l e r g i e s a r e v e r y c o m m o n . Unfortunately, today, all allergies are very common.

What happens with allergies is very simple. Genetically Engineered food came and our body is not able to recognize it. People have allergies, not just food. Our genes did not have enough time to

recognize if this is the right or wrong food. So we are allergic to everything, including the grass, our own pets, hair, dust, and everything. You can take regular medication, but that will not solve the problem.

Ayurveda for many years recommended a Neti Pot, which is a very simple remedy. Use warm water (lukewarm water), use a little bit of salt in it, and mix it. Then put it in the nose and let it come through. That keeps the sinuses clean. Then we recommend the Nasya; it means medicated oil. Depending on your dosha, you can put a few drops of various oils that will prevent allergens from getting into you. These are the home remedies I am giving.

Ay u r veda a l so helps you w it h prevention of diseases. There is a definition of health in Ayurveda. In Sanskrit, it says you have to have a proper dosha, proper agni, proper healthy tissue, and a healthy excretion system; the second part is the most important: you have to have a happy mind, you have to have proper sense. The Ayurvedic definition of health leads to the happy, healthy body. And the World Health Organization has now accepted it as a definition of health. That is part of what attracted to me to Ayurveda—no one else gives you the definition of health. Our goal is not to treat the disease; our goal is to treat the person, the nature.

vital body By Barbara Bedingfield

First of all, dear parents, it is never too late to help your children develop good life habits that will stand them

in good stead for their school days and for their life’s work. It is easier, of course, to begin early before children have developed poor habits, for develop them they will if they are not guided to do otherwise. If your child is older, even a teenager, and you are now realizing that this is the case, you may just have to go back to the strategies that work for a much younger child and bring your child forward until they are at the place where you can implement strategies that are appropriate for their chronological age.

By Developmental Stages

Birth to seven is the developmental stage during which children learn by imitation. They are like sponges soaking up everything around them. Therefore, the adults in their lives can best teach by providing models that are worthy of imitation. This means attending to our own habitual ways of doing things. When we are cooking, cleaning, do-ing laundry, making repairs, or gardening we should take our time, become fully present with what we’re doing and pay attention to the care with which we do our work as well as the thoughts we have. Often we rush about clanging and banging, talking on the cell phone and wishing we were doing some-thing else. This sense of not having enough time and always engaging in multi-tasking leads to unkempt rooms, burnt food, tops left off the toothpaste, and clutter in our houses and in our minds. More importantly, there is a strong inner soul impression left on the children. It is very unsettling in an unconscious way. They learn best from who we are and what we do, not from our instructions, admonitions or high praise.

This same principle applies to how we treat our spouses or partners, how we speak

about others, how we speak to one another, whether we say please or thank you as a mat-ter of course and, most interestingly, how we relate to the plant and animal world and to inorganic objects.

Here are just a few examples of good hab-its and suggestions for helping children to develop these good habits in age-appropriate and explicit ways:

Saying Please and Thank You

For the young child, simply say the words for him or her. If they have received a gift, simply say “Thank you” for the child who is seven or younger rather than saying to the child “Say thank you, Where’s your thank you? Say thank you now, What do you say?” In my kindergarten when the children asked for more rice and carrots I said for them, “May I have more rice and carrots, please?” and they uttered the same words uncon-sciously. I do this each time for them and soon they have developed the habit without bringing it to consciousness.

Children seven to fourteen, if they have not developed this habit, can be taught by telling them ahead of time, “We say thank you when someone gives us something or does something for us.” This implies that the child is part of a group and this group has a culture. My school is dedicated to creating a school culture of politeness and courtesy out of which we will teach the children. We must, of course, follow through and remind them quietly when they forget, or in the moment simply say “Johnny?” and pause, implying that they have forgotten their man-ners. It is more beneficial to use the term “We” as in “We say thank you,” rather than “You should say thank you.” Children do better when they feel they are part of a larger stream of things, like fishes in the water. They are held, in a manner of speaking, in

the arms of this culture of politeness and courtesy. Older children are able to write thank you notes when it is appropriate and they should be reminded to do this.

You May Not Interrupt

Only infants and young toddlers should be granted the liberty to interrupt conversa-tions as they are still living in the center of their world and relying completely on their caregivers, as they should be. As children get older, a hand on the head or shoulder is a gentle signal that you’ll turn your attention to them when you are at a stopping place. In classrooms teachers stay close to those children who habitually blurt out and inter-rupt others in order to give them signals that don’t disturb the flow of the class.

At home parents can begin the process of training children out of this habit by say-ing “We don’t interrupt,” then continuing. Only in cases of emergency is interrupting permissible.

Greetings

It is a tradition in Waldorf schools around the world for the class teacher to greet each child as they enter the door of the classroom in the mornings with a handshake, a few words and a direct gaze. People outside the school who see our students often remark on their ability to stop, look directly and greet others in a very natural way, whether those others be children, guests, parents or teachers. While this greeting at the classroom door is done for pedagogical reasons—getting a sense of how the child is this day, acknowledging the “I” of the other, and creating an important threshold into the classroom-- it also serves to ingrain in the students a sense of propriety that carries over to their encounters with all people.

Picking Up Toys and Cleaning Rooms

Helping Children Develop Good Habits

Page 17: TBWellness March, 2013

Tampa Bay Wellness • march 2013 17www.tampabaywellness.com

All children can be trained to keep their rooms tidy, but the way we go about it has to be age appropriate. We should not expect a child under seven to be able to tackle room cleaning alone. If done in the spirit of “Let’s do this together,” and for the young child, bringing in images that delight them such as “All the toys are going to sleep for the night,” most children will cooperate fully. The key is to do this daily, perhaps before going to bed, so that the habit becomes ingrained.

The older child can be expected to do this on his or her own, but with a parent standing close by to see that it is happening and that it’s being done in the right way. It is better to avoid any “If, then” kinds of language such as “If you clean your room, then you may…” This gives children a choice. They can choose not to do whatever you are of-fering as an enticement. Good discipline is about determining what you expect from a child and then training them to do it. If an older child has not been trained as a young child to help with cleaning up, you may need to take them back to that young child stage and do it with them until they feel confident on their own.

Under all circumstances please avoid the ubiquitous “Good job!” It is not that we should never praise our children, but when that term is over-used it becomes meaning-less. It also stands in the way of a child’s enjoyment of an accomplishment for the thing itself, rather than for the praise that follows. Better to say to an older child, “You worked hard on your room.” For the young child, your closeness and your delight at the activity together will bring them satisfaction that is far deeper.

Take Small Steps and Stay Close

It would be wise, if training these good habits have not been a part of your parent-ing, to choose one thing at a time to focus on and to persevere with the training of that particular habit until it is a part of the child. Staying close means not giving a direction until you are available to be right there to make sure it gets done, even if you have to stay there the whole time. “Time to go,” calls the mother, and the children begin playing even harder so they can ignore her. Better to walk over so that you can gently, but firmly, take them by the hand as you’re letting them know that it’s time to leave. With older children you can give them a five-minute warning. Young children need their parents right by their side as they’re brushing their teeth. When they get older, you can tell them to brush their teeth, but you will walk by the bathroom door to make sure it’s happening. This principle can be used with any habit you are trying to develop in the child.

In the kindergarten my assistant and I developed a strategy to help a six-year-old boy who resisted helping to clean up the kindergarten room at the end of play time. We agreed that after giving him his task, we would stand in place beside him as he did his work. We did not walk away or put our attention on anyone else. We simply kept reminding him that “We’re all cleaning up now.” This is what he needed—our close-ness and our attention.

All of these parenting commands can be given in a firm, but gentle way. No nagging needed. No shouting. No negotiating. No “If, then…”, and certainly no “Would you like to…?”

Developing good habits entails:

1) Forming a clear picture of how we want our children to speak to us, and how we want their rooms to look, and how we want them to comply with our expectations

2) Speaking with the voice of a loving authority and putting ourselves fully into our words rather than throwing them out mindlessly almost as an after thought (Stop attaching an OK? at the end of your com-mand.

3) Not giving children so many choices (This is way over-done today)

4) Staying close to see that what we have said is to be done is actually done

5) Practicing. When children habitually slam doors, have them return to the door and practice closing it quietly until they get it right

6) Being consistent..

Fostering a good habit life in our chil-dren serves them well—for now and for the future-- in their own satisfaction with themselves, in their social relationships and in their life as adults. An added bonus is that good manners and good work habits serve to hold children in such a way that they are given tremendous security. Out of this security comes self confidence and courage to face whatever may come their way.

the body By ashley Gass

Great Guts!

Gut health, or lack thereof, is a hot topic in medicine today. Rightfully so, as proper gas-

trointestinal (GI) function is critical to all aspects of body function and ad-equate nutritional status. Failures of the GI system can manifest as diges-tive diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and colorectal cancer (3). Autoimmune diseases can originate from GI dysfunction, and include Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, chronic dermatological conditions, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), allergies, asthma, schizophrenia, and autism (1,3).

In my work with clients, I’ve found that most people aren’t really aware of their gut - until things go wrong. This makes sense, since we don’t ‘see’ our gut on daily basis. We go about our days eating and drinking, taking for granted that all of our meals end up getting digested and put to use. That is, until things go wrong and we begin experiencing common GI symptoms: bloating, cramping, gas, constipation, diar-rhea, and insomnia. Let’s review GI anatomy real quick in order to gain a better understanding of this system.

The gut is also referred to as the enteric nervous system (ENS), or, “second brain” (1). This system con-

tains tens of trillions of cells, and is home to 10 times more bacteria than all the cells in the entire body, 400+ species of which are known (2). The GI system begins with the mouth, and proceeds to the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intes-tine, large intestine, rectum, and the anus (1). It has a big role to play as the body’s gatekeeper between the outside world and the body’s inside environment. Our GI system is con-stantly analyzing everything coming in, differentiating between beneficial and harmful. It attempts to put to use beneficial (think high quality food) while discarding harmful (think poor quality, highly processed food). How do you know if you have opti-mal GI health? You have a couple easy bowel movements daily, don’t fart with each step you take, sleep soundly, have consistent energy throughout the day, feel good after eating, and experience minimal food cravings or mood swings. You aren’t taking acid blockers or antidepressant medications (to name a few) (1).

Good Guts Gone Bad

We spoke above about the gut as the “second brain”. Remember, trillions of cells, and tons of bacte-rial species? It’s a sensitive, highly aware system. If we bombard it for long enough with a poor diet (low

Page 21: TBWellness March, 2013

Tampa Bay Wellness • march 2013 21www.tampabaywellness.com

protein, low veggies, low omega 3 fats, high sugar, high starch) certain medications (anti-biotics, acid blockers, NSAIDs) (3), genetically modified foods, and chronic stress (constantly being “connected” to mobile devices, relentless work and family stress, persistent unhappiness) the GI system will eventually fail.

Bad Guts Restored

Good news prevails, however. If you suffer from poor GI health and various symptoms

associated with it, there’s hope. But, it’ll require change, and a few beneficial supplements.

Initial dietary steps include the removal of of-fending, but often favorite foods. Get rid of anything containing gluten, toss the sugar bomb cereal (your kids don’t need it, either), and pick up a good cookbook (I recommend Paleo Comfort Foods, by Julie Sullivan Mayfield) and get to work.

Multiple supplement protocols are available to assist this process, and will vary slightly depend-ing on your health care provider. These include essential fatty acids, amino acids and peptides such as glutamine and glutathione, and direct digestive support such as betaine HCL, pancre-atin, and bile acids (3). Probiotics have proven to be extremely effective in healing the gut, largely due to their role in re-establishing healthy bac-teria and intestinal barrier function (1,2).

As you can tell, the GI system is fascinating and complex. Nurture it with good food, basic digestive support, probiotics, laughter, and daily attempts at stress management/reduction. Work closely with your health care provider to eliminate the harmful medications listed above.

Increase Your Happiness Quotient with Positive Affirmations…

Good News! Finally, there is scientific research to back up what psychologists and therapists have been saying for

years; acting on what makes people happy has a powerful effect on their lives. In other words, the pursuit of happiness doesn’t happen to people because they are just lucky, on the contrary; bliss occurs by actively changing your current thoughts and practicing new ones.

One way to accomplish this is by affirming daily positive thinking. The practice of positive affirmations was hilariously satirized by the SNL T.V. skit known as “Daily Affirmations with Stuart Smalley”. Smalley was played by actor/comedian Al Franken who sat in front of a mir-ror reciting phrases like “I’m Good Enough, and Smart Enough and Doggone it People Like Me”!

Along with Franken and the SNL gang of writers, the practices of Positive Psychology recently gained a boost from Dr. Sonja Lyubomir-sky. Lyubomirsky, a research psychologist at the University of California at Riverside, published the results of her study on the brain and happiness in her book entitled, The How of Happiness. She essentially came up with the brain-pie diagram that illustrates how 5% of our happiness relates to genetics, 10% to environment, leaving 40% to what we do and how we think. This 40% is not only a significant chunk but also reinforcement for those currently practicing their positive daily affirmations!

Here’s a helpful list developed by noted Psychologist Albert Ellis, PhD. that may help you identify what negative thought processes are that can create/cause emotional upset; or as he called it your “stinking thinking”! Ellis felt this list was universal and that these common beliefs were the result of rigid thinking or demandingness of thought vs preferential thinking.

• It is a need or dire necessity to be liked or loved by all

• I must be perfect, not fallible at all times and can’t make mistakes

• Life should/must be fair

• Things should go my way or that would be awful

• I can’t stand what happens, occurs in my life

• My childhood must continue to control or de-termine my emotions/behavior (it’s their fault I’m a mess)

• Unhappiness is externally caused and I can’t control it

• They made me angry or I did it because of them

• Others must agree, or do as I say/think/believe

So, for those of you who want to get on board and up your happiness quotient, you can take a cue from Stuart .Write down some phrases that resonate with how you would like to feel or act, check for rigid or inflexible thinking, rephrase as a desire then repeat, repeat, repeat !

Because as Stuart always says “practice makes me perfect and doggone it I’m worthy”!

Finally, this is one of my favorite positive affirmations by Marianne Williamson (para-phrased):

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure...we ask ourselves who am I to be bril-liant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be..there is nothing enlightened about shrinking so others won’t feel insecure around you…as we let our own light shine liber-ated from fear, we unconsciously give permission to others to do the same…we are all meant to shine and make manifest the glory of god that is within us”

For me, the accelerated journey to reconnecting to my intuition started in 2007. After many

years of undoing and releasing the negativity-fears, frustration, and hurt that I was carrying-the steps quickened to an awakening of my soul/spirit. The intuitive voice was recognizable again. Most children have it, but by adulthood, the voice is blocked by negativity.

Negative memories in thoughts and emotions, if not released, get stuck in the subconscious. It is the subconscious that limits the connection to guidance and protection that is available through intuition. It is part of the reason why we are here, to transform negativity into positivity, darkness into light.

The energies we are in close proximity to rub off on us over time. As children, we don’t have control of it, but as adults, we become aware of the differences in energies; we move away from the negative towards the positive and learn

to transmute the negativity into positivity. Prerequisites to effective meditation involve connective tissue release, energy center balance, and proper breathing technique.

There are many ways to clear the subconscious memory. Following the wisdom of your heart is a start. For me, it was a calling to learn Myofascial Release. As a student, I experienced a transformation from stuck subconscious memories, trapped energy and restricted physical fascia. Fascia is connective tissue and a conduit of energy in the body. When the connective tissue is restricted, it blocks the energy flow where emotional, mental and physical memories from the past can be stored. Myofascial Release is a way of reconnecting and restoring the health of the body. When those tight areas of connective tissue open up, the mind becomes clearer, the past emotions are released, and the spirit can fill an expanded vessel that is your physical body. This has been my experience with

Myofascial Release and others who have been touched by the amazing techniques.

Another prerequisite to meditation is opening and balancing the energy centers of the body. Chakras are wheels, vortexes of energy in the body that correspond to organ and endocrine systems. There are seven chakras in the physical body, and the eighth is the aura. Chakras one to seven, from bottom to top of the body, correspond to the colors red, orange, green, blue, indigo and violet, the colors of the rainbow. The aura is the combination of all seven and is white in color. This system has been written about since the beginnings of human history, from Yogis in India to Tibetan monks to ancient Egyptians. Those who are seers can see the light of the chakras; now with technology, it can be photographed and measured.

There are many paths to expanding and balancing the chakra and aura energies. Strong and balanced chakras keep the physical body healthy and strong and a radiant aura help to keep the person

protected from negative energies outside of its energy field. Kundalini yoga is the yoga of awareness. It is a practice that was designed to focus on opening and balancing the energy centers of the body through exercise, sound current and breathing techniques, to prepare the body and mind for meditation.

The importance of correct breathing cannot be stressed enough. The breathing function is to flow not only oxygen but also flow energy through the chakras. Diaphragmatic breathing is the mechanism that creates movement of the cerebral spinal fluid through the spine and central nervous system. Many people are not aware of this breathing pattern because it is an unconscious activity. We are born breathing in this manner, belly breathing. It happens without thinking about it. However, it can be disrupted by stress, physical or emotional. Perhaps you had incorrect instructions on holding the posture upright and holding in your abdomen and not allowing the belly to expand on the inhale. This can lead to physical restrictions in the connective tissue of the respiratory diaphragm, rib and lungs. There is reduced flow of energy, oxygen and cerebral spinal fluid. This in turn reduces the health of the body.

Diaphragmatic breathing and breath work help to clear the subconscious mind by allowing one to feel what lies within, one’s emotions and thoughts. Every thought carries an emotion. The purpose of emotion is to create an action in a timely manner. If we wait too long, the emotion builds that can cause over- reaction rather than a conscious action filled with compassion and grace. Find

ways to express emotions in healthy ways. If emotions and thoughts are stifled and not expressed, they get stuck in the subconscious. What is brought to conscious awareness then has the opportunity to be released, thus healed. Shine light on the dark areas within, feel it, release it and the healing is done. You no longer carry that energy in your body. Sometimes subconscious memories are stored in the body in certain positions in space. In order to access it, the body needs to unwind and find that position in space to release the trapped memory.

When enough of the subconscious memory has been released, and the energies of the chakras and aura have been balanced, through the practice of prayer and meditation, you can receive answers, to know what was unknown before. This just means you have clear intuition for guidance in the present and more protection from negative energies. This will help you stay on your life’s higher path instead of being pulled into distracting energies and traveling down roads that don’t serve you.

Meditation requires some know-how and practice. Meditation happens when the mind is still. Ask questions in the form of prayer and be in stillness long enough to hear the messages to your questions. For those who have monkey mind, always thinking about something or have a hard time sitting still, you will need to prepare through yoga, Myofascial Release, breath work, etc. to get to the point of quieting the mind and body. Know that it’s the process of being in stillness for periods of time.

There are many paths to meditation. Just ask where to start, then do start. Once

you can connect with a technique, just make it a daily habit. It’s best to practice first thing in the morning when there is less activity going on. This morning practice helps to still the mind and connect with the divine flow, to guide you during the day. If you miss it in the morning, do the meditation before sunset. If you have missed both, just do it when you can. What you practice for 30 days it starts to become a habit. By 90 days, you are holding the habit. What will happen on this course of action will be more in-flow of intuition.

As you follow the guidance of your intuition, you will notice synchronicities as messages that you are on the path. The guidance comes to an individual in unique ways, different from anyone else. It’s a process of trust and faith.

Carolyn Puckett, MPT, MSIf you want to learn how to meditate, come to this class. I will be teaching Beginner’s Meditation on Saturday March 23, 2013, 2PM-3PM, 401 Corbett Street, Suite 340B, Clearwater, FL 33756. Please RSVP at 727-365-8838.

An Herbal JourneyWhy Herbs?

It is said that herbs are like a key that fit in our keyhole brain receptors, unlocking our genetic code and rewiring us to our natural path. We are all coming back to the

old ways. Instead of masking symptoms with prescription drugs, thereby causing more side effects that need yet another drug, people are looking for natural healing alternatives.

Herbs are Mother Earth’s gift to us. Her knowledge is inherent in every leaf, flower, bark, berry and seed. Every animal knows its remedy and from man’s observations of animals, has come most of our knowledge of herbs and their uses. All herbs and other healing plants (like aloe vera) have chemical constituents that match our own body’s systems. Each family of plants has its own peculiar habit of taking from the soil a specific group of chemical elements. By using herbs in their complete form, the body’s healing process utilizes a balance of ingredients provided by nature.

My JourneyIn my early 20’s herbs saved my sanity. My

passionate, emotional nature would uncork and erupt out of my head. Yep, I suffered from migraines.

Though our family didn’t visit doctors much, the symptoms were debilitating me every day. So I was put on medication. After yelling at a pharmacist over the phone for messing up my prescription, I knew the meds were affecting my moods. I weaned myself off and picked up an old book my mom had on her shelf from Adele Davis. Though not a hippy (she was from an older generation), my mom was a health food nut. I mean, e-gads, she even put brewer’s yeast in my toddler formula.

Our family has always learned to heal themselves through home remedies. Before I was born, my parents managed a dairy with my five brothers and sisters in the late 50’s. My dad took care of the cows when they were sick and milked them twice a day. While I was growing up in the 70’s, my father worked for a veterinarian supply company. So we had access to antibiotics if ever necessary. My mom then practiced organic gardening, grinding grains and whole foods cooking. We never had boxed, premade items, except for Saltine crackers (my dad’s favorite). I remember most days opening the fridge and not being able to just grab a pre-made snack. It was last night’s leftovers or you made something.

Oh and boy did my mom make things—homemade wheat bread, fresh applesauce, cabbage rolls, and lemon meringue pie from our own lemon tree. Holidays were my favorite. All the family would connect and we’d feasted all day on momma’s love. The table was always exquisite.

So I was grateful for being raised “natural” in a time where TV dinners and boxed mac n’ cheese were the norm. Eventually my mother sold vitamins for a multi-level marketing company and we swallowed everything from trace minerals to animal glandular.

So here I was now reading Adele Davis who was telling me to try herbs. I had to take them every day, but the migraine symptoms really subsided. Madame Feverfew (chrysanthemum parthenium) led me on my journey.

I quit my stressful job that I was commuting to 2 hours a day and took six months off of work. I then took a solo journey from Los Angeles to Seattle in my convertible mustang. It was an eye-opening experience as I was connecting with my own desires and beliefs. I mountain biked, jogged, hiked, swam and ate the most amazing food while sleeping in sweet B&B’s.

Around this time I began learning of more healing arts. Madame Feverfew continued to support my nervous system, while I practiced meditation, visualization, yoga and did whatever I pleased.

In 1999, I pursued a degree in Naturology from the American Institute of Holistic Theology. My first course was Herbology! My text book was Elementary Treatise in Herbology which felt like it was written 100 years ago and was a very old school curriculum with Native American roots. I began diving into the world of herbs and formulas and found my new passion. I put an herbal fever remedy in each of my Holiday cards one year and sparked a new business venture. Today I’m still creating formulas and bagging tea for clients.

Begin your knowledge of herbs by embracing one or two in your life to start. I prefer teas or tinctures to dried powdered capsules. Herbs like to have their constituents coaxed out of them via hot water or a long soak. Some herbs can be taken daily as a tonic, while others are used only in acute circumstances.

Begin your study at www.wheelsoflght.org and find the Herbology 101 E-book.

By Dr. David Minkoff

Cancer is a world-wide problem but is there another approach to this disease that makes scientific sense? At LifeWorks Wellness Center, we think so. Here are the details.

What Makes a Cancer Cell Different?A cell became cancerous because it has

been damaged by various environmental toxins and infections and is no longer a good member of the body. In a way, its own plan is take over the body by sending its daughter cells all over as mercenary soldiers. Eventually this takes over the body and the person dies.

In order to accomplish this, the cancer cell must change its metabolism and anatomy. While a normal cell gets its energy using glucose and oxygen, the cancer cell prefers glucose and no oxygen. We call this anaerobic

– or non oxygen using- metabolism. When a normal cell uses glucose and

oxygen it can produce 38 units of energy (called ATP). The cancer cell that makes energy without oxygen can only make 2 units of energy ATP. That’s not much energy, so to survive it needs a lot more sugar.

Now that sugar cannot just enter the cancer cell by itself. It must pass through a door and that door is opened by a natural

hormone called insulin. Our body produces insulin when we eat a meal that has any kind of carbohydrate (sugar) in it. In order for the cancer cell to get more sugar, it manufactures many more insulin doors so it can take in much more sugar. Many cancer cells have as many as 10X the number of insulin doors.

We can take advantage of this in treating cancer.

Insulin Potentiation Therapy (IPT)Here is how it works….If we give the person with cancer, insulin,

we can open the doors of the cell. Then, if we give chemotherapy, the cancer cells will take up many times more of the chemo than the healthy cells. Thus we can give a very small amount of the chemo (usually 10% of the regular dose) and flood the cancer cell, while the healthy cell only gets a very small dose. This small dose does not usually affect the healthy cell so bone marrow suppression and hair loss is uncommon. The immune system stays healthy and active, but the cancer cells die.

To further support the immune system we use high dose Vitamin C, Ozone, minerals, lipoic acid and Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy. This combination of therapies and healing diets and detoxification help the person fight the cancer more effectively.

IPT – Treating Patients, Not Cancer

When a person is diagnosed with cancer it can be frightening because of the uncertainty of recovery and the difficulty of a treatment regimen that may require surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

At LifeWorks our approach is different. We maximize the potential for recovery by optimizing the diet and lifestyle, enhancing the immune system with IV and oral nutritional supplementation, supporting detoxification, and utilizing low dose Insulin Potentiated Chemotherapy to reduce the tumor burden. We believe this approach gives patients who want a holistic approach to overcoming their cancer a viable option and an intelligent choice.

At LifeWorks, we are continually helping patients either prevent, or fight, cancer and we can do the same for you. Call 727-466-6789 today for an appointment or more information.

Dr. David Minkoff is co-founder and Medical Director LifeWorks Wellness Center. He is one of the first US doctors trained in IPT by Dr. Donato Garcia, the grandson of the discoverer of the technique.

Some alarming statistics surfaced this year from a joint study by the University of Minnesota and a research group in China and Singapore; individuals who eat fast food twice a week are 30%

more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Double those fast food runs to four times weekly, and you are 80% more likely to die of cardiovascular disease.

What makes fast food so dangerous? The main factor is that fast food is highly processed and largely devoid of essential nutrients your body needs to thrive and survive. Just about everything we consume has macronutrients – carbohydrates, protein and fats. Macronutrients provide the calories that are converted into energy and fuel our vital organs. They can be likened to building blocks.

Micronutrients are the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytochemicals that further nourish our bodies and protect us from toxins and disease. They can be compared to the mortar that holds the building blocks together; without this reinforcement, no structure would remain secure over time.

Processed foods (which include fast food as well as the prepared meals you find in grocery freezers and shelves) are engineered to make them irresistible to the consumer. Not only are they quick, filling, convenient and easy, they also appeal to the taste buds. An eye-opening segment on 60 Minutes about Givaudan, the multi-national fragrance and flavoring giant, revealed that any nuance of flavoring can be chemically imitated.

This means that food manufacturers can use the poorest quality meat and produce, but artificially boost the taste appeal to fool your taste buds. In this investigative report, they showed how chicken dinners are hose-sprayed with “buttery, crispy chicken” flavors, and then flash-frozen. Laboratory-produced food simply is not designed with the goal of supplying your body with vital nutrients.

When most of the food you eat on any given day is from a chain restaurant, a box, a can or a freezer, you are, in essence, eating more facsimile than real food. That’s like faxing food to your body, which over time may have serious health consequences.

Make at least 50% of what you are feeding your family whole, living, ethical, sustainable organic, real and slow-prepared foods, and revel in the health and well-being that comes from flooding your body with life-enhancing micronutrients.

FOOD FACSIMILE– How much of what we eat is real?

After

Throat cancer was killing me. How could this happen to me? I eat 90% organic. I consume no sugar. I have an active life style. I am doing everything right. Of course, 50 years of smoking cigars might have a great deal to do with it. Yes, I quit 15 years ago, but the damage had already been done. The slow build up of symptoms didn’t alert me to my situation until I had achieved a stage four squamous cell carcinoma at the base of my tongue. The tumor was so aggressive it grew out of the side of my throat.

That was a year ago. I followed the same protocol we prescribe for our patients, and now the cancer is gone. I contribute our success to a total life style change and Ozone therapy. Because injectable Ozone therapy is illegal

in this country, we modified the program used in other countries to allow us to use it here at the Sentient Temple Healing Center. We have this therapy available here now

for only $25 a treatment. The benefits of Ozone Transdermal Therapy is miraculous. Transdermal Ozone, also known as Hyperthermic Ozone and Transcutaneous Ozone Therapy, is a method in which Ozone is introduced into the body via the skin while sitting in a hot steam cabinet. As the pores of the skin open as a result of being surrounded by the warm steam, Ozone enters the body transdermally (i.e. via the skin).

The Ozone then penetrates the blood, lymph and fat. By allowing Ozone in, and toxins out, via the sweating process that is induced, Transdermal Ozone Therapy is one of the most powerful methods of detoxifying and oxygenating the body in existence. This accounts for the effect that heat stress has in killing cancer. Both heat stress and Ozone kill cancer so this treatment offers the best

opportunity to eliminate cells which are

fermenting sugar anerobically, halt

metastasis and restore healthy aerobic

function.

ARIESDo you typically play the giver or the receiver? This question becomes more significant as you are pressured to move beyond your current boundaries and routines. Practice being a bit more open and welcoming while at the same time you move beyond pretence. Seek to move beyond just superficial gratification in life issues.

TAURUSEven offers that seem to good to refuse should be examined carefully. Bigger is not necessarily better. Evaluate responsibility and be mindful of not taking more on that what is necessary. Avoid dramatizing your situation and keep grounded in practicality and sense of purpose. While you cannot necessarily judge a book by its cover, unless you want to take the time to read the whole thing, delay taking any major leaps.

GEMINI There is a need to be outreaching to others via sharing your awareness. While, at the same time, it is important to seek our and expand your current level of information in order to build for the future. You have a natural knack for being able to not only discern the gaps between others and their beliefs, but also to heal them as well. Diversity coupled with unity consciousness will serve you best if you take the time to develop it.

CANCER There is a bit of the stranger living amongst you. Take the time out to dig deeper into your feelings now. There is much to be gained in going into the more shadowy aspects of yourself while you also seek to release old clogged emotions, spent feelings and regrets. This time is about your own inner child and how you may have put her aside in the taking care of others. Make this time your time now.

LEO Bigger questions may loom in your mind as you consider how to expand more of what you are currently pursuing. Be mindful of patterns as well as habits and attitudes that can get in your way. Missing small details can also be a problem. Contemplate how you can still be active and productive while at the same time, keep your life and affairs in perspective. Now is the time for slow and steady.

VIRGO Adapt to changing needs and situations and allow yourself to prepare for the unexpected. For you, there is little possibility in stopping the flow of your life in its current course of affairs. Use your innate inner wisdom to be the decider in situations that arise. Do not put yourself through any hard times. Come to terms with what is, what has been and be flexible to what will be. That is ZEN for you.

LIBRABehaviours of both yourself and others become increasingly important over this time. Feathers can be ruffled as you seek to clarify needs and viewpoints. Be wary of thoughtless intrusion and deception, often in the most subtle of ways. There is a need to maintain standards now in all you do.

SCORPIOEmotions can be running high now as you can get confronted by others regarding issues you may have been skirting. Make sure you are taking the time to listen to what others are truly saying to you. This is a long time frame of testing you in subject areas such as flexibility, self-honesty and sincerity. Be mindful that you can no longer continue certain patterns and still meet with success.

SAGITTARIUSEliminate associations or groups in which you are feeling singled out or dominated. There is a need to use not only good humour but also charisma to better navigate the waters ahead. Take yourself just a bit more seriously while keeping the inner muse alive and well. Rise above indulging in lower emotions such as greed or impatience and seek to reconcile both inwardly and out.

CAPRICORNYour situation can feel a bit more uncertain now, with seemingly different elements and aspects to it. Do not linger in confusion. Instead take pen to paper and make a priority list while putting other more nonessential tasks aside. There will be increased demands placed in your lap over the months ahead so streamline and fine-tune. You will be glad you did!

AQUARIUS It is not enough to just play the part, you are being called to show up and give proof as to what you are capable of. Avoid doing anything for superficial reasons. If there are to be higher standards then you best set the example. Most of all drop every need to fulfil any one else’s expectations and express your true feelings in all situations. Otherwise you are just playing a role that has little intrinsic value to yourself or anyone else.

PISCESSet some time aside to run through or practice any difficult tasks that may lie ahead. Preparedness is the key now as you take action in ways that have been heretofore unseen. Drop all wasteful routines and be mindful to not overreact to anyone or anything. Let go of what you can now see has served its purpose!

Journey of the Heart to Egypt - October 12th to 26th 2013. The dream of your lifetime fulfilled. Limited to 16 spaces only. Contact Dr. Imsara for details.
