Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyHey Everyone! Hope the week is treating you right. Busy around

here as usual. Working, canning, mowing, cleaning, playing shade-tree mechanic.... you know, taking it easy. Well, the mechanic work had an extra twist last weekend. I had taken the rotor off the front of the Tidbits car to have it turned and smooth out the braking, when my son showed up to give me ride to the shop. During the ride over there,

his front brakes on the passenger side were grinding... not squeaking, but grinding - the kind of sound no car should make. So, it was clear that it needed, at the mini-mum, new pads. No big deal, I'm a DIY sort of guy, so we drop off my rotor and get a set of pads. I already had all the tools out so I jumped right in on the worse side because I had to have this car back together no later than 4PM or I wouldn't get my rotor until Monday - not good. So I zipped off the tire and got the caliper off just in time to feel the first drop of rain on my back. OK, no big deal, I spent a lot of time running around in the rain when I was a kid and I never melted. I continued along, and the rain just kept getting steadily heavier and, of course, I have no option but to forge ahead and finish. By the time I got the second side back together and the car back on the ground, I was soaked... and I mean soaked - even the soles of my shoes were dripping water.

The thing no one could understand was why I was smiling the whole time... because all I could think was "NOW I DON'T HAVE TO WATER THE GAR-DEN!!"

Thanks for reading the issue of Tidbits of the Lake Area, Lynette and I appre-ciate it very much! Stay safe out there and we'll see you next issue!!

GONE FIXIN'

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (PG-13) -- Since he defeated the villain in the last movie and got the girl, Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) loves being Spider Man.

He should be careful, though; a flashback shows that Peter’s ge-nius parents left be-hind a trove of dan-gerous super-science research, just waiting to be discovered by the right psychopath. Spidey’s got his sticky hands full in this sequel -- dodging lightning bolts from Electro (Ja-mie Foxx), grappling with the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan) and

trying to keep a healthy relationship with his charming gal (Emma Stone).

The special effects have never been better, Spidey’s action scenes are thrilling as ever, and the stars of the show all turn in quality work. But there are just too many threads in this web. With weird pacing and a heap of subplots, it’s hard to follow the action beyond the “boom-bang-pow.”

“Only Lovers Left Alive” (R) -- Sick of vampires? Don’t give up just yet. Now that every two-bit production has taken a stab at the romanticized monsters, a talented director and a magnetic cast spread their wings, leaving their mark on the genre. Tom Hiddleston is an underground musician who mourns mankind’s downward direction. Hiding out in a dilapidated corner of Detroit, he’s been in a centuries-long romance with Tilda Swinton, currently on a trip to Tangiers in search of high-quality hemoglobin.

This couple is just too cool for mortality. Director Jim Jarmusch puts just the right level of moodiness into every scene. While the characters and locales are depressed, the movie itself is as enjoyable as a tall drink of the good stuff.

“The Quiet Ones” (R) -- An Oxford professor (Jared Harris) doesn’t believe in ghosts. He takes a team of attractive college students to study the creepiest, most obviously possessed orphan girl they can find (Olivia Cooke). She’s always talking to an imaginary friend while things tend to break, fly around or catch fire around her. The university pulls the plug on the research, so the professor makes the super-smart decision to continue the study in an old house in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately, the film relies a little too heavily on sudden noises to get cheap jumps. It’s just not as scary or quiet as you’d expect.

Before Congress raced off to vacation in August, senators voted 91-3 to pass the long-awaited, $17 billion veterans emergency health-care bill.

Here are a few tidbits from the bill:• Veterans will receive a Choice Card for care, but don’t

get excited yet. To qualify for this card, a veteran must have served within the past five years, or already be signed up with Veterans Affairs health care. It will be more of an ID/

insurance card that gives service information for eligibility. You likely won’t be able to take the card to a private doctor unless the care has been approved by the VA.

• If a veteran is given a long wait time for appointments (over 30 days) or lives more than 40 miles from care, he or she will be eligible to get private sector care. That 40 miles is “straight line,” aka geodesic distance.

• Veterans who were sexually assaulted will receive care.

• Twenty-seven new clinics will open.• The VA will hire $5 billion worth of new health-care

providers.• Bonuses will be capped at $360 million per year.• The VA secretary will be allowed to fire senior VA

executives much more quickly. When they look for incompetents to fire, I hope they aim

their lasers at the VA medical center in Kentucky. A veteran

Q: Every year I have to deal with brown and dying grass, because the climate we live in gets so hot in the late summer. We also have water restrictions to deal with. How can I keep my lawn healthy? -- Bryan in Norcross, Ga.

A: Dealing with watering restrictions and drought condi-tions has become a regular way of life in many Southern states, and it’s especially difficult for homeowners who want a green, lush lawn during a prime time of year for outdoor parties and

What do you call a woman who stands between two goal posts? Annette.

This is the ultimate steak sandwich -- marinated, grilled flank steak mingles with hefty slices of grilled onion, ripe tomato and peppery arugula leaves.

1/4 cup soy sauce1/4 cup balsamic vinegar1 tablespoon brown sugar1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves1/4 teaspoon ground pepper1 (1 1/4-pound) beef flank steak1 medium (8-ounce) red onion, cut into 4 thick slices8 slices sourdough bread, toasted on grill if you like2 medium ripe tomatoes, sliced1 bunch arugula, tough stems discarded

1. In large sealable bag, mix soy sauce, vinegar, sugar, thyme and pepper. Add steak to marinade, turning to coat. Seal bag, pressing out excess air. Place on plate; let stand 15 minutes at room temperature or 1 hour in refrigerator, turning several times.

2. Prepare charcoal fire or preheat gas grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat.

3. Remove steak from marinade; pour marinade into 1-quart saucepan. Heat marinade over high heat; boil 2 minutes.

4. Place steak and onion slices on hot grill rack. Cover grill and cook steak and onion 12 to 15 minutes or until onions are browned and tender and meat is medium-rare, brushing both with marinade occasionally and turning both over once. Transfer steak to cutting board; separate onion into rings.

5. Thinly slice steak diagonally across the grain. Arrange onion rings and steak on 4 slices of bread; spoon any meat juices from board over onion and steak. Top with tomatoes, arugula and re-maining 4 slices of bread. Serves 4.

collapsed at home and was transported there, where he was hooked up to life support. By the time his wife and family arrived at the hospital, staff told her that her husband was dead. They gave her a specific time of death. Distraught, she asked to see him one more time to say goodbye. What she found was a living, breathing husband with good heart rate and blood pressure who was responding to commands.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My border collie mix, “Rex,” was difficult to housetrain when he was a puppy, but things smoothed out for several years. Now suddenly he’s pooping all over the house again. I scold him, he looks ashamed and whines, but then it happens again. How do a retrain an old, stubborn dog? -- Clark in Kansas City

DEAR CLARK: Take Rex straight to the vet. When an adult dog that had no issues with housetraining for several years suddenly develops issues, it’s not a problem of stub-bornness. Something else is going on.

Incontinence is a somewhat common problem in senior dogs, as they develop various physical problems with bladder, kidneys or muscles. In adult dogs that haven’t reached their expected senior age, eliminating in the house can signal an infection or other disease. In both cases, pets need to be evaluated by a veterinarian.

Working out an appropriate treatment may take ad-ditional testing and, depending on Rex’s diagnosis, a bit of time to work out the right medications to give, if any. You’ll also need to accommodate his problem, hopefully

Adult Dog Forgets Its Housetraining

on a temporary basis, by setting up disposable pee pads appropriate to his size in each room he frequents.

A side anecdote: When my mother’s aging German shepherd became incontinent, she rolled out spare carpet strips wherever he walked or rested. These she could clean or dispose of when he had an accident.

Train Rex to use the pads similar to his original house-training outdoors.

It’s important to keep up his routine as much as pos-sible: Take him for his walks at the same time as usual and feed him at the same time (unless otherwise directed by the vet).

Q: I had been watching this new show on the CW network called “Seed,” and I really liked it. Now I can’t find it anywhere. Can you tell

me what happened to it? -- George S., via emailA: The Canadian comedy (to

which the CW bought the rights) is about a 30-something ne’er-do-well -- and previous sperm donor -- who becomes acquaint-ed with the offspring he never knew he had. It didn’t do so well in the ratings and was canceled after two shows. The CW has not said whether it plans to air the remaining episodes in any form (either online or via DVD or Vid-eo On Demand).

This truly is a shame for Amer-ican audiences, because “Seed” really is a delightful show. Hmmm ... maybe TBS could pick it up? In Can-ada, “Seed” has aired a full first season and already has been renewed for a second, so the episodes are out there if you are interested in continuing to watch.

I recently interviewed series star Adam Korson, who is one of the nicest people you could ever meet. In Adam’s words: “This is a show for those who want a half-hour to laugh and escape from your everyday life. You’re going to watch it, and you’re going to relate to it. I remember as

a kid I would tune into ‘Seinfeld’ because I knew for that half-hour, I was going to be laughing and be taken on a crazy journey. I think that’s good television, and that’s what our show is.”

• • •Q: I’ve loved Portia de Rossi

ever since “Ally McBeal,” and especially in “Arrested Develop-ment,” but I haven’t seen her in anything lately. What can I see her in next? -- Kellie Y., Bowling Green, Ohio

A: The gorgeous and talented actress -- and wife of Ellen DeGeneres -- will be hitting the small screen this fall when she appears in a multi-episode arc of the hit ABC political drama “Scandal.” And what better way to announce your next project than by your wife “acciden-tally” letting it slip on Twitter? Ellen recently announced to her millions of Twitter followers: “So annoying when people brag on Twitter, and that’s why I’m not tweet-ing that Portia just signed on to do a top-secret arc on Scandal. Oops.” “Scandal” returns for its fourth season on Sept. 25 at 9/8c. (Note the time change from last sea-son.)

• • •Q: Will my favorite show, “Fargo,” be back for an-

other season? -- Paul R., via emailA: You betcha! FX has renewed the critically acclaimed

drama -- which is based on the Coen brothers’ hit movie of the same name -- for a second season, especially after it racked up 18 Emmy nominations! Season two, which will consist of 10 episodes, most likely will air in fall 2015, although no specific date has been set.

• On Aug. 19, 1812, the U.S. Navy frigate Constitu-tion defeats the British frigate

Guerrière in an engagement off the coast of Nova Scotia. The British shot merely bounced off the Constitution’s sides, as if the ship were made of iron rather than wood. The bolts fastening the timbers and copper sheathing on “Old Ironsides” were provided by Paul Revere.

• On Aug. 23, 1904, Harold D. Weed of Canastota, New York, is issued U.S. Patent No. 768,495 for his “Grip-Tread for Pneumatic Tires,” a tire chain to be used on automobiles to increase traction on roads slick with mud, snow or ice.

• On Aug. 20, 1911, a dispatcher in the New York Times office sends the first telegram around the world to deter-mine how fast a commercial message could be sent. After it traveled more than 28,000 miles, relayed by 16 differ-ent operators, the reply was received by the same opera-tor 16 1/2 minutes later.

• On Aug. 21, 1920, Daphne Milne, wife of writer A.A.

Milne, gives birth to a son the couple names Christopher Robin Milne. Christopher Robin was immortalized in A.A. Milne’s books “Winnie-the-Pooh” and “The House at Pooh Corner.”

• On Aug. 18, 1958, Vladimir Nabokov’s controversial novel “Lolita” is published in the U.S. The novel, about a man’s obsession with a 12-year-old girl, had been re-jected by four publishers before G.P. Putnam’s Sons ac-cepted it.

• On Aug. 24, 1969, Company A of the Third Battal-ion, 196th Light Infantry Brigade refuses the order of its commander, Lt. Eugene Schurtz, Jr., to continue an attack near Da Nang, Vietnam, because they had “simply had enough.” Schurtz was relieved of his command and trans-ferred. Neither he nor his men were ever disciplined.

• On Aug. 22, 1992, the second day of a standoff at Ran-dy Weaver’s Ruby Ridge cabin in Idaho, FBI sharpshoot-er Lon Horiuchi wounds Weaver and kills his unarmed wife, Vicki, as she holds their baby daughter. In 1997, Horiuchi was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death, but a federal judge dismissed the charge, citing the alleged immunity of federal officers.

Q: I have the comic “Death of Superman” and wonder how much it might be worth. -- Robert, Kitty Hawk, N.C.

A: “Death of Superman,” or Superman No. 75, was issued in 1993 by DC Comics in several formats. If the one you have is still sealed in a black plastic bag, it is worth about $16. Other editions include platinum ($50), regular first press run ($8) and other edi-tions ($4-$6). With comics, condition is paramount. Prices might vary a little depending on dealer and region.

BELT SANDER: An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 24-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A very large pry bar that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end opposite the handle.

DREMEL TOOL - A very useful tool for modellers which allows them to make more mistakes much faster, thereby turning $100 kits into spare parts, and completely justifying the purchase of another $100 kit.

DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat met-al bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your can drink across the room, splat-tering it against that freshly-stained heirloom piece you were drying.

EIGHT-FOOT LONG YELLOW PINE 2X4: Used for levering an au-tomobile upward off of a trapped hy-draulic jack handle.

ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age.

HACKSAW: One of a family of cut-ting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to lo-cate the most expensive parts adjacent to the object we are trying to hit. Also used as replacement for screwdriver.

HOSE CUTTER: A tool used to make hoses too short.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

• • •Q: I have several old calendar plates from the 1970s. One pro-

moted our country’s 200th year. Are they worth keeping? -- Mary-Anne, Broken Arrow, Okla.

A: Only you can determine if your plates are worth keeping. Most calendar plates from the 1960s and ‘70s that I have seen in shops and at antique malls have been priced in the $10 to $25 range. There are always exceptions. World War II-era patriotic plates seem to be especially collectible and are priced accordingly. A “Win the War” design from about 1943 recently sold for $75.

• • •Q: I have a print of Claude Monet’s “Woman Seated Under the

Willows” from the Dale Collection at the National Gallery of Art. It is lovely, but I doubt that it has much value except in the beauty. -- Dorothy, Warrick, R.I.

A: Your print likely was originally sold in the gift shop at the National Gallery of Art in Washington. It would have limited value to a collector, but my advice is to keep and enjoy it. The beauty of Monet’s artwork is, at least in my opinion, truly priceless.

Q: The basement of the early-1900s home we recently purchased has sturdy stone walls and a concrete floor. There are no apparent water problems. But there are a lot more creepy-crawlies than I’d like, including spiders, beetles, ants and these horrible alien-looking things my husband says are centipedes. Short of fumigating the entire house, how can I get rid of these pests? -- Claudia H., Worcester, Mass.

A: Ah, the ecology of the older basement. The alien-looking centipedes also are known as house centipedes, and while they do look like something out of a nightmare, they are voracious eaters of other bugs like beetles and spiders.

Still, you don’t want to find any of those pests lurking under a pile of laundry. Ants, house centipedes and spiders all can sting or bite.

The first thing you’ll want to do is find where many of these pests are entering the base-ment. Even if the walls and floor are structurally sound and appear dry, very small cracks or holes may have developed over the years. Ants are the easiest to track: Find one of their trails, or create a trail by placing a small amount of crumbs in a pile on an otherwise clean floor. The trail will typically lead back to the perimeter of the basement where the floor and

wall meet. Mark each entry spot with tape or chalk.

Next, test how bad the house centipede or beetle population may be, by setting down sticky traps in the areas you last saw these pests. Even if you just catch one, it will confirm their presence.

A pest-control professional can do the most thorough job of elimi-nating these creatures, or you can find bug sprays specific to these

pests at home-improvement stores. But if you don’t want them coming back, you’ll need to close up entry points and reduce the amount of moisture.

The basement may seem dry, but the appearance of house centipedes often signals a mois-ture problem. Have a contractor specializing in basements evaluate the floor and walls to find out if water is seeping in. Small cracks and gaps need to be sealed using correct mortar or cement patching material to allow for expansion and contraction.

Meantime, look around the outside foundation of the house for potential water and bug magnets, like piles of leaves or old mulch, drain spouts that are pouring water directly down into the foundation rather than being extended out several feet away, or firewood stacked against the wall. These issues can be dealt with quickly and easily and can reduce both bug and water issues.

HOME TIP: Store boxes and place dirty laundry containers on platforms or shelves that keep them off the ground in areas that centipedes and spiders frequent.

Kristina Zajic, speech pathologist and mom of 8-year-old Aisha and 10-year-old Elizabeth, loves bins. She has sand-toy bins, Barbie bins, ball bins, pretend-toy bins, office-supply bins and even nail-polish bins. “When I walk into Target and see a new color, I’m inspired to have the fresh look for the season,” she said. “That’s why I snapped up two bright travel-size bins for my daughters before our three-hour car trip to stay in their grandparents’ fifth-wheel RV at a campsite.”

For no-tech car-trip entertainment, she filled the bins with new sunglasses, treats and plenty of challenging card games, activity books and art supplies. “My oldest daughter does get carsick,” she confessed. “That’s when the girls put reading and card games on hold for a while, and we play brain games to-gether. The miles and twisty curves fly by.”

Here’s a word game that’s fun for school-age kids and adults to play together in the car or how-ever you travel. My daughter taught it to us on a winter car trip. “Go to the Moon” got us through snowstorms, slippery mountain roads and being asked one too many times, “Are we there yet?”

“GO TO THE MOON”The person who is “It” thinks

of three things that have some-thing in common, such as a mango, pineapple and papaya (all tropical fruits). “It” then says to the other players, “I’m going to the moon and taking along a mango, a pineapple and a papaya. Who wants to come with me?” Given the clues, the first player tries to figure out what the items have in common, then names a fourth item that fits the category, such as “banana.” Another, more complex example might be, “I’m going to the moon and taking along the Twins, the White Sox and the Tigers” (all professional baseball teams). A fourth item that would fit could be the Royals.

If the item fits, “It” responds, “You may come with me.” The next player names an item. If the player names an item that doesn’t fit, he or she may try again on the next turn. When everyone finally learns the common element, the round is over.

Topics can be as simple or as complicated as you choose. Try to accommo-date even the youngest in the family when playing.
