The film version oftheMarvelcharacterwasthrashed bycritics andfanboys alike,mostly for un-originality. Butit will alwaysbe a specialone forAffleckand Garner(who playslove interestElectra in thefilm), because it marked the beginning of their ro-mance. But it took the couple a year tomake theirrelationship public. Garnerwasmarried to actorScott Foley andAffleckwas engaged to JenniferLopez. Then they appeared at a baseball match in2004, and theworld was smitten. Apparently,Affleckwooed her over email. How romantic!

shesaid, ‘Yes’!Twoyears into their relationship,Affleckgot downonone knee andaskedGarner to behiswife onher33rdbirthday.Garnerwas alreadypregnantwith their firstchild,Violet (above).Twomonths later, in June, theyweremarried at a secret location in theCaribbean.“Ben is not onlymyhusband, he has helpedme ineveryway,”Garner toldTheSun. “He is the base ofmylife.He is an incredibly loving and generousman.”

Affleck also spoke of howGarner helped himdeal with the aftermath of his relationship withLopez. “Mywife was definitely around then,” he toldPlayboy in 2013. “Getting to know her, falling in lovewith her and being connectedwith her gaveme afoundation to reach out and say ‘Okay, I’m goingto doHollywoodland. I’m going to directGone BabyGone. Thosewere the steps forward I needed.”

“Aftermuch thought and carefulconsideration,wehavemade thedifficultdecision to divorce,” the couple said ina statement issuedby their publicists.“Wego forwardwith love and friendshipforone anotheranda commitment toco-parenting ourchildrenwhoseprivacyweask tobe respected.Thankyou forunderstanding.”

The couple have three children:Violet,9, Seraphina, 6, andSam,3.
