The road ahead is paved with opportunities and challenges.As Malaysia’s leading private educational institution of higher

learning,Taylor’s is alwaysat the forefrontof educationwhichhasenabledustobetterprepareandguidestudents,facultiesandstaffalikeforthefuture.

In this issueofCampusNews,youwillbeupdatedon thevariousmeasureswehavetakeninimprovingandbroadeningoureducationapproaches. There are also ample news of how both studentsand lecturersaredoingusproudbybringinghomeaccoladeafteraccolade.

ProofthatTaylor’shasbeensuccessful inourendeavourstomakea difference in education has come in the form of the “Tier 6:Outstanding”thatwasawardedtoTaylor’sCollegebytheMalaysianQualityEvaluationSystem(MyQUEST)forPrivateColleges2010/2011.IwouldliketotakethisopportunitytocongratulatetheTaylor’sCollegeteamontheiroutstandingachievement.TheMalaysiangovernmentalso demonstrated their confidence in our research capabilities byawarding Taylor’s University a RM9 million grant under the LongResearchGrantScheme(LGRS)bytheMinistryofHigherEducation.Iampleasedtonotethatitisthehighestresearchgranteverawardedtoaprivateuniversityunderthisscheme.

Inotherrelatedareas,Taylor’sbecomethefirstprivateuniversity inMalaysiatoearnthePAQSaccreditationforourQuantitySurveyingCourse.Furthermore,ourLakesideCampuswasawardedtheGoldAwardinCategory5(Education)intheprestigiousbi-annualPAMAwards.

In the past few months Taylor’s has successfully forged more tieswithcorporationsanduniversities.ThisincludestheMemorandumofAgreement(MoA)betweentheSchoolofBiosciencesandtheHalalIndustryDevelopmentCorporation (HDC)and theMemorandumofUnderstanding(MoU)betweentheSchoolofHospitality,TourismandCulinaryArts(TCHT)andtheAmericanJohnson&WalesUniversity(JWU).

At Taylor’s, students are encouraged to take part in national andinternational level competitions which are also open to workingprofessionalsastheseallowthematasteofinnovationandtogetafeelofreal-worldexpectations.Needlesstosay,Taylorianshavebeenmakingusproudbycontinuingtobringhometrophiesyearafteryear.

In the last quarter alone, Taylor’s School of Hospitality, Tourism &Culinary Arts (TCHT) beat international competition to bring home29medalsatCulinaireMalaysia2011and13medalsattheBattleoftheChef2011.Taylor’sSchoolofArchitecture,BuildingandDesign(SABD)studentswereresoundingwinnersattheMalaysianInstituteof Architects (PAM) Annual Architecture Students Works Exhibition2011.

Inaddition,twoTayloriansimpressedjudgesatanInter-VarsityPublicSpeaking Competition to walk away with top prizes. Meanwhile,postgraduatestudents fromtheSchoolofBiosciencescameawayas winners for their work in the 36th Annual Malaysian Society ofBiochemistry and Molecular Biology (MSBMB). A special mentionmust be made of the six TCHT bachelor degree students whopresented their papers at the Asia-Pacific CHRIE (APacCHRIE)Conference2011.Thesearejustafewofthemanyaccomplishmentsbyourstudents.

Taylor’s strongly believe in making a difference in the world andwehadcarriedoutseveralactivitiestothisend.DuringtheTaylor’sEducation Group World Food Day, more than 4,500 volunteersgatheredatfourTaylor’scampusestopackonemillionmealsforthehungryaroundtheworld.AlsoscholarshipsworthmorethanRM4.3millionwereawardedtostudentswithexceptionalresults.

Toguideyouthinschoolstowardlearningaboutdifferentindustriesand career opportunities, both the Taylor’s Business School (TBS)Inter-SchoolAccountingQuizCompetition2011andthe4thNationalCulinaryChallenge2011hadbeensuccessfullyconducted.Ontopofthat,therewastheMyBioCarnival-acollaborationbetweenTaylor’sUniversity,theMalaysianBiotechnologyInformationCentre(MABIC)andtheMalaysianBiotechnologyCorporation(BiotechCorp).

AsyougothroughthislastissueofCampusNewsfor2011,youwillalsocomeacrossmanyotherstoriesofhowstudents,lecturersandstaff are consistently shining in both academic and non-academicareas.

SuperblyOUTSTANDING!Taylor’s College Subang Jaya awarded the highest rating of‘Tier 6: Outstanding’

Taylor’sCollegeSubangJayawasawardedthehighestratingof‘Tier6:Outstanding’intheCollege-BasedCategoryinthe

Malaysian Quality Evaluation System for Private Colleges (MyQUEST) 2010/2011, by the Ministry of Higher EducationMalaysia(MOHE).

Onlythreeoutof210privatecollegeswereawardedthe‘Tier6:Outstanding’rating.

In addition, the college, one of Malaysia’s oldest and mostestablishedprivate institutionsofhigher learning,alsoachieveda 6-star rating in another two cluster-based categories, namely‘GeneralProgrammes’and‘InternationalStudents’.

With a rich heritage spanning over 42 years, Taylor’s Collegehas played a significant role in shaping the nation’s educationlandscapeandthedevelopmentoftheyouthoftheworldtotaketheirproductiveplaceasleadersintheglobalcommunity.

“Wearetrulyhonouredtohavebeenawardedthehighestratingof‘Tier6:Outstanding’,intheMalaysianQualityEvaluationSystemfor Private Colleges (MyQUEST) 2010/2011, by the Ministry ofHigherEducation.Thisawardisafeatherinourcapandasealofexcellenceonthequalityofourpre-universityeducation,”saidMr.LimTouBoon,PresidentofTaylor’sCollege.

MyQUEST 2010/2011 measures the quality of a private collegeaccording to its ‘Input’ (quality of students and resources),‘Output’ (programmerecognitionandgraduaterecognition),andtheQualityManagementSystemofthecollege.

Underthecertification,Malaysia’sprivatecollegesareclassifiedintosixtiers,namelyTier6(Outstanding),Tier5(Excellent),Tier4(VeryGood),Tier3(Good),Tier2(Satisfactory)andTier1(Poor).

Outofatotalof210privatecollegesinMalaysiathatwereaudited,only three or 1.4% of the colleges attained the six-star rating,while20colleges(9.5%)attainedafive-starrating,and60(28.6%)attainedfourstars.

LEADING A RM9 MILLION‘RESPONSIBLETOURISM’RESEARCHSTUDY

Taylor’sUniversityhasreceivedaRM9millionresearchgrantfromtheMinistryofHigherEducation(MOHE),underitsLongResearchGrant

Scheme(LGRS)–thebiggestgrantdisbursedtoaprivateuniversityinthecountryunderthisscheme.

Theareaofstudytobeundertakeninvolvesthebalancingoftheescalatinggrowthofthetourismindustrywiththepreservationoftheenvironmentanditslocalcommunities.Thestudywillprovideaholisticunderstandingoftheindustry’skeystakeholders’needs.

SaidProfessorDato’Dr.HassanSaid,Vice-ChancellorandPresident,Taylor’sUniversity,“Thegrantdemonstratesthegovernment’sconfidenceinourresearchanddevelopmentstrengthsaswellasourabilitytodeliveronsuchahugeproject.Thisisanhonour,especiallyaswearethefirstprivateuniversitytoeverreceiveagrantofthissizefromMOHE.”

Titled“Multi-dimensionalResponsibleRuralTourismCapacity(RRTC)FrameworkforSustainableTourism”,thestudyaddressestheeconomic,socialandenvironmentalaspectsofsustainabledevelopment.ItisexpectedtoassisttheMinistryofTourism,Malaysiatomoreeffectivelymanageallruralandecotourismsitesthroughthedevelopmentofatourismbarometer.

“Ecotourismandruraltourismgrowsatarateof30%peryear,andMalaysiaisrecognisedasoneofthebestecotourismdestinationsinthisregion.Althoughwell-managedtourismisprofitable,theindustry’sgrowthistakingatollontheenvironment.

“Hence,thedevelopmentofsustainableruraltourismisdependentonfulfillingtheobjectivesofallstakeholdersinthesystem.Theinter-relationshipsamongthestakeholdersmustbefully-identifiedastheirindividualneedsmayvary.Thusitisimperativetohaveaholisticunderstandingoftheimpactofthesedevelopmentsonkeynaturaldestinations.ThisproposedstudyisessentialifthetourismindustryinMalaysiaistomovetowards‘highyieldtourism’,”explainedAssociateProfessorDr.VikneswaranNair,DirectorofResearchandDevelopmentatTaylor’sUniversity.

ThemaindeliverableoftheprojectisalsotheintegratedmanagementsystemforresponsibleruraltourismcapacitywhichactsasthetourismbarometerthatwillassistinthemonitoringandmanagementofMalaysianruraltourismsites.

“Withasystematicmanagementsystem,thequalityandmanagementofthesesiteswillbeexceptional.Thiswillattractnotonlyagreaternumberoftouristsbutalsothosewithhighdisposableincomes,toexperienceruraltourisminnaturalsettings,”concludedDr.Nair.

inthebi-annualPAMAwards.Thearchitectand builders behind Taylor’s UniversityLakeside Campus were NKWA ArchitectsSdn.Bhd.andEhsanBinaSdn.Bhd.

The Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM)Awardjurywerequitetakenupbytheidylliccampus, causing them to cite the designasa“masterful integrationofthelakewiththecampusbuilding–aninspiringplaceforlearning”.

The bi-annual PAM Awards is the premieraward for architecture in Malaysia whichrecognisescontributionsmadebyarchitectsin terms of design quality and that of thebuiltenvironment.Thisyear,theselectionofawardswasmadebythePAMGoldMedal2011 Jury chaired by the PAM President,Ar.BoonCheWee,togetherwithpastGoldMedallists,winningarchitectsand industrymembers.

“We are proud to receive this prestigiousaward. We strongly believe in the impact

of creating a conducive, dynamic andcollaborative environment that not onlysupports but also enhances our teachingand learning abilities. This was the mainidea behind the concept and design ofthiscampus,andtoberecognisedforthisis truly an honour,” said Professor Dato’Dr. Hassan Said, Vice-Chancellor andPresident,Taylor’sUniversity.

Taylor’s University raced against time toclaimtheMostOutstandingTeaminCateringServicestitleattheCulinaireMalaysia2011,the nation’s highly anticipated and mostprominentculinarychallenge.

The Taylor’s School of Hospitality, Tourism&CulinaryArts (TCHT) teambeatover600localandinternationalhotels,restaurantsandeducationinstitutionsfromMalaysia,Taiwan,

Hong Kong, Korea, Germany, Mexico andothercountriestoemergeasthetopwinners.Thefinaltallywasanimpressive6Gold,13Silverand10Bronzemedals;makingacleansweepoftheExcellenceAwardsintheFood& Beverage section, a feat that no othercompetitorhaseveraccomplished.

The star of the competition, Derek LohZhengwengrabbedtheBestF&BPersonneltitle and RM3,000 cash prize with hisremarkable achievement of 3 Gold and 1Silver medals haul. The final year studentfromtheBachelorinHospitalityandTourismManagement programme won a Goldmedal each in the Mocktail, Cocktail andTable Setting category and dominated theExcellence Award in both the Mocktail andCocktail categories.Healso took theSilvermedalintheFruitFlambécategory.

“Competingwithindustryprofessionalswasagreateyeopeningexperience,buttoactuallybeat themwasawesome!” saidanecstaticDerek. “I’mhappy thatoursleeplessnightspractising and fine-tuning technical skillshavepaidoff.Ihavemylecturers,familyandfriendstothankforthesewins,”hedeclared.

Dean of Taylor’s School of Hospitality,Tourism and Culinary Arts (TCHT),Mr. Neethiahnanthan Ari Ragavan, said, “Icongratulateandthanktheteamforwiningthe Most Outstanding Team in CateringServices at Culinaire Malaysia 2011. Thishas sweetened TCHT’s 25th anniversarycelebration and made it more meaningful.Thisisdefinitelyonlythebeginningformoretocome!”saidMr.Neethia.

The MoU with theAmerican university allows for theexchangingofexpertiseandexperience,andcollaboratingonresearchprojects.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Taylor’sUniversity,Mr.PradeepNairsaid,“Thereis so much to learn from the American

education system and this partnership offersmany opportunities to do so. This will be a fruitfulcollaboration.”

Dr. Jeffrey Senese, Vice President for AcademicAffairs at JWU also expressed his confidence inTaylor’sUniversityandthepartnership.“Wesharethesameobjectiveindevelopingourmodules,andthatistofocusonpracticalresearchandprojectsrelatedtotheindustry,beithospitality,businessortechnology,”hesaid.

Heldat theCentreofDesignandArchitecture (CoDA)atTaylor’sUniversityLakesideCampus,thedrawingexhibitionwaslaunchedbyHisExcellencyWilliamBelevanMcBride,AmbassadorofPerutoMalaysiaandMr.KenTan,DeputyDeanofTheDesignSchoolatTaylor’swiththepresenceofDato’LoyTeikNgan,GroupCEO,Taylor’sEducationGroup.

FeaturingtheincredibleworksofPeruvianartistanddesignlecturerErnesto, the unique exhibition showcased a series of colourscribbles,sketchesinblackandwhiteink,aswellascurrentworkwhichrecordedanddocumentedthesignificanceofthePeruvian-IncaCosmic Iconography.Theexquisitedisplayaimed to reflectandstrengthentheculturaltiesbetweenPeruandMalaysiaandtopromoteanappreciationforPeruvianartlocally.

Since itsofficial launch inMarch thisyear,CoDA has been kept busy with variousculturalartexhibitions.

‘InandOut,NowandThen’wasorganisedto extend academic, art and design andcultural exchange, and explore on futurecollaborations and student mobilityprogrammes between the SabanciUniversity and Taylor’s University. Mr.Alex Wong and Mr. Wiselaw Zarembafrom Sabanci University exhibited theirphotography and oil painting artworks atCoDArespectively.

Someoftheartworkdisplayedatthe‘Cosmic Spirit,an Interpretation of Peruvian-Inca Cosmic Iconography’.

Mr. Zaremba’s “Three Wives” featuredbeautiful paintings using oil, acrylic andtempera in mixed technique; whereasMr. Wong’s “In And Out Of the Mist” and“Realm of Endless Stretches” featurednumerousbreath-takingphotographsoftheenvironment.

DeputyDeanofTheDesignSchool,Mr.KenTan,commentedthattheexhibitionplayedanimportantroleinnurturingstudentsandlecturersintobetterartists.“Theseartworksdepict the contemporary and multi-facetsof the art form and narratives touchingthe agenda of humanity. “Inmyclasses,Iteachtheconceptofsmallsuccessesthatyoucanbuildononeatatime.Successislikeasnowballrollinginthesnow.Everytimeyouaresuccessful,itislikerollingthatsnowballafewfeetinthesnow.Themoreyourollit,thebiggeryoursnowballbecomes.Thissnowballrepresentsyourskillsandareasofinfluence,whichwillgrowasyouaccumulatesuccessesalongtheway,”sharedCatherine.

100 students stormed in to listen to“CommActing: What The Books Don’t TellYou”, that was held in conjunction withCommFest 2011. Aimed at educatingstudentsontherelationshipbetweentheatreandmedia,well-knownlocalcelebritiessuchas Gavin Yap, Ida Nerina, Zahim Al-BakriandSusanLankester shared their upsanddownsduringthesession.

The approachable speakers covered awide range of interesting topics includingan interactivesessionwith thestudentson“Howemotionsdifferfromactingonthebigscreenandinthetheatre”.

All three speakers had unique methods toshed tears on stage. Nonetheless, Zahim’sanswer drew peals of laughter when hedeclared-“Justpulloutanosehairandyouwilldefinitelycry!”

“First,askyourselfthreeimportantquestions.ShouldIbealeader?WhymustIbealeader?Andfinally,howdoIbecomealeader?”statedAndreaswhoalsoadvisedstudentstobe“theconductoroftheirownlivesandgoals”.

On a more serious note, Zahim explainedthat actors and the production crew andscriptwriterplayanequallyimportantroleinthesuccessofaproduction.

“An actor becomes a whole new personas he plays a character; and he has tounderstand thatcharacterwell.However, itisnotadvisabletoimprovisethescript.Thiswould change the way the story is writtenand the scriptwriter would have put muchthoughtincreatingandblendingtheplottodeterminetheflowoflowsandhighsinthescript,” shared Zahim who has directed anumberoftheatricalshows.

JudithLee,astudentwhoenjoyed the talksaid, “As someone who is interested intheatre production, I found the talk to beinsightfulasitgavemeadeeperknowledgeonthechallengesthatactorsface.”

FoundationinNaturalandBuiltEnvironments(FNBE)studentswon four out of ten awards, including the first prize at the

“Electrolux Student Think Eco Challenge” competition. ThecompetitionispartofElectrolux’greencampaignthatencouragedstudentstoexpresstheircreativityusingrecycledmaterial.

Hafida Abu Walid and Allen Jonathan Guansing’s innovativedesignofanOilBarrelBedemergedChampionofthecompetition,beating 91 other competing designs from 20 local universitiesand colleges. They walked away with RM3,000 cash prize andRM2,000worthofElectroluxproducts.

Hafida, a second semester FNBE student at Taylor’s School ofArchitecture,BuildingandDesign (SABD)explainedthat lecturerPuanNorHayatiRamlihadencouragedthemtocompete.“Ourdesignfocusedonbeingeco-friendlyandspace-saving.TheentirebedcanbefoldedandputintoanSUV(SportUtilityVehicle)foroutdooractivities.

“Weweresurprised towinand really takenabackwhenpeopledeclaredtheywantedtobuythefurniture!”saidHafida.

Taylor’s University scored anotherfirst in gaining Pacific Association of

Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) accreditationfor its Bachelor of Quantity Surveying(Hons)programme,makingitthefirstandonly Malaysian private university to earnsuchanhonouredaccreditation.

The PAQS accreditation means Taylor’sUniversity quantity surveying graduatescanobtainprofessionalrecognitionintheirhome countries, and gain exemptionsfromprofessionalexaminationsinalleightPAQSmemberassociationcountries.

TheeightmemberassociationincludetheAustralian InstituteofQuantitySurveyors(AIQS), Association of South AfricanQuantity Surveyors (ASAQS), BuildingSurveyors Institute of Japan (BSIJ),Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors

(CIQS), Institute of Quantity Surveyors SriLanka (IQSSL), New Zealand Institute ofQuantity Surveyors (NZIQS), SingaporeInstitute of Surveyors & Valuers (SISV) andTheInstitutionofSurveyorsMalaysia(ISM).

Taylor’s University graduates can nowwork in PAQS countries and apply asgraduate members first, then sit for theTest of Professional Competence (TPC) orAssessmentProfessionalCompetence(APC).Uponpassingthetest,theywillbecomefullPAQSmembers.

as twin brothers Justin Yap Zi Xian and JordonYap Zi Yuan of SMK Damansara Jaya emergedchampion at the competition held at Taylor’sUniversityLakesideCampus.

Competing against 10 other college participants,Thirushaan Gunasakaran caught the judges’attentionwithhiscreationofdishes,donewiththeingredients revealed only at the beginning of thecompetition–lambrumpandbeeftopside.

Thirushaan is currently pursuing his final year ofBachelor inHospitality&TourismManagementat

of Foreign and European’s Affairs, thesummer school also saw 28 facilitatorsand French language lectures taking partin the programme. Mr. Yeoh was the onlyMalaysianlecturerteachingFrenchtoattendtheprogramme.

A final year student in the Bachelor ofHospitalityandTourismManagement,Henrysaid, “Since the Vietnamese are fluent inFrench,wehadtocommunicatewiththemin

Dr. Lai How Yee’s research paper on “Antioxidant Properties of Some Malaysian Ferns” was awarded the Certificate for

Excellent Paper at the International Conference on Chemical,Biological&EnvironmentalEngineering.

Basedononeof themanyprojectsdisplayedat theconference,Dr. Lai’s paper explored new and natural sources of bioactivecompounds,anddescribed the resultsofapreliminaryscreeningof antioxidants from 15 species of ferns in Malaysia. The paperaimstocreateawarenessonethno-medicinalvaluesonMalaysianferns,andhighlightthepotentialusesofselectedfernsasnaturalantioxidantsourcesforfurtherresearch.

TheconferencewasheldinSingaporefrom16thto19thSeptember2011.

Three postgraduate students from the School ofBiosciences presented their research work at the 36th

Annual Malaysian Society of Biochemistry and MolecularBiology(MSBMB)conference.

ThegoodnewsisthatMs.ChooKhiKhiandMr.JeremyOngYeeHoongwererecognisedfortheirworkontheirposters.Outofthe104posters,theirswereplacedinthetop10.

ActingupfortheGoodoftheCommunity

FoundationofScience (FIS) students raised funds forRumahKebajikan Good Shepherd through a drama based on a

literaturetexttheyhadstudiedtheprevioussemester.

The amount raised was handed over at a cheque presentationceremonyheldatTaylor’sUniversityLakesideCampus,whichwasattendedbythechildrenfromthehome.

Prior to the ceremony, FIS students had rolled out three songperformances, a rap performance; and several internationalstudentshadconductedanexperience-sharingsessiononlifeandlessons learntoncampus.Theshortvisitendedwithacampustour.

Ms. Den Shu Chien, Associate Dean for FIS, commented thatstudentsshouldgobeyondmerelystudying.Thereisaneedtounderstandandappreciatetheircommunity’sneedsandfindwaystocontinuouslygivebacktosociety.Thisinturnwillcultivategoodvalues in their livesandpromoteawholesomestudent learningexperience.

Theraisingoffundsforthehomewaspartofthestudents’Englishtermproject.AtFIS,studentsareassignedaprojectorplan,whichistargetedtobringasignificantchangetothestudent.Projectscarriedout in thepast includesdramapresentations, foodsalesandexhibitions.Studentsdevise theirownplanofactionwhichincludes proposal writing, budgeting, advertising, ticketing andstagingof theevent.Allproceedsgarneredfromtheprojectarethendonatedtoadeservingcommunity.

Theproject,whichrunsforaspanof8–10weeks,contributes10%towardstheassessmentoftheentireFISprogramme.Newprojects are introduced each semester and no two projects arealike.

AhighlightoftheHealthMonthwas“RiceforLife”–acampaignwherestudentscollectedriceoncampusaswellasfromthecommunityof Subang Jaya. In total, 100kg of rice wascollected. This, together with RM1,000 thathadbeencollected,wasdonatedtoMalaysianCARE.

4,500 Volunteers PackOne Million Meals

Inlessthaneighthours,theherculeantaskofpackingonemillionmealsforthehungrythroughouttheworldwasaccomplished.

On 16 October 2011, during theTaylor’sEducationGroup(TEG)

World Food Day, more than 4,500volunteers from all walks of lifeandasyoungas6yearsold,cametogethertomakeadifferenceintheworld. Their efforts were part of aCSR project by Taylor’s EducationGroup(TEG),thatfulfilledapledgetocontributeonemillionmealstofeedthe hungry in conjunction with the

WorldFoodDay.Allofwhichwasaccomplishedwithineighthours.

Thepledgewasmadekeepinginmindthatin2010,anestimated925millionpeopleintheworldwerehungryormalnourished.Everyday,morethan25,000peoplearoundtheworlddieofhungerorhunger-relatedcauses.

TheTEGWorldFoodDay2011tookplacesimultaneouslyacrossfourcampuses–Taylor’sCollegeSubangJaya,Taylor’sCollegeSriHartamas, Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus and Sri GardenSchools.

“ThisisthefirsttimeTaylor’sEducationGroupistakingpartinaMealPackaging Event. Our original target of getting 1,000 volunteers

“TheTEGWorldFoodDayisourwayofcontributingtooneofthemosturgentproblemsintoday’sworld–hungerandmalnutrition.Althoughourcontributionmaybejustadropintheoceantowardssolvingworldhunger,webelievethateverydropcounts.Wealsohopethattheeventhascreatedawarenessontheissueofhungerandmalnutritionandbroughtittotheforefront,”addedDato’Loy.

WiththecollaborationoftheAmerican-basedNGO,StopHungerNow(SHN),theonemillionfinishedfoodpackswillbedistributedtocrisis-burdenedareasorschoolfeedingprogrammeslocallyandaroundtheworld,includingSomalia.

“Eachmealpacketcontainssixhighly-nutritiousdehydratedmeals. This is what makes this event different from a regulardonationdrive,wherethepubliccontributedriedprovisionsorfoodto a particular organisation,” explained Ray Buchanan, FounderandInternationalPresidentofStopHungerNow(SHN),whohaspackaged and distributed over 51 million meals to 76 differentcountriessince2005.

Two Cambridge A Level (CAL) Jan 2010 students have beenoffered theEntranceScholarship for InternationalStudents intoTheUniversityofHongKong.TehMingXunandSimYuYangarenowpursuingtheBachelorofScienceandBachelorofEconomicsrespectively.

Theentrancescholarshipisawardedtotoprankinginternationalstudents,withamountsrangingfromHK$10,000toHK$160,000.It is renewable on a yearly basis and will cover tuition,accommodation,andsomelivingexpenses.

1. Tell us about your internship. Iworkedinboththerestaurantandkitchendepartment withmanyeveningshiftsservingmostlycorporateand businessguests.PlusImetguestsfromalloverEurope andevensomefromChina!

2. What was it like working in Novotel Compans? Itwasinterestingandenjoyable.However,sinceIwasn’t fluentinFrench,conversationswerealwaysachallenge. Icouldmanagewithguestsbutonlyahandfulofmy FrenchcolleaguesspokeEnglish.Ijustscrapedbythe firstmonthwithmyownversionof‘Franglish’.Eachtime IaskedifIshouldarrangethecushions,Iendedupsounding likeIwantedtohidemycousins!So,youcanimaginehow Iwasrepeatedlylaughedat.

3. What are the differences between the working environment there and in Malaysia? TheFrenchmindsetistotallydifferent.Theyreallytake prideintheirserviceandittrulyshowswhentheydonot performuptotheirownexpectations.Theyarehard workerswhoalsoplayhard.Theyworkfivedaysaweek andinsummeritiscompulsorytotaketwoweeksoffso thattheycomebackrefreshed,readytoperformbetter.

4. What did you learn or gain from this experience? Independence.ThiswasthefirsttimeIhadstayedsofar awayfromhomeforsuchalongperiodoftime.Eventually Iadaptedtotheirlifestyle.Ofcourse,Ialsomademany newfriendsfromTaylor’salumniwhowereworkingand studyinginFrance,aswellasfromNovotel.Now,France islikeasecondhomewithanotherfamilythere!

5. Did you do any sightseeing during your training? Ofcourse!Once,Iworkedninedaysstraighttogetfour daysofftovisitParis.Aftercompletingtheinternship,I visitedtheneighbouringcountrieswithmymother.This Frenchinternshiphasallowedmetowidenmyhorizons throughtravelling.

6. Any advice or tips to share with future interns? Itisimportanttorememberthatwhereveryougo, youshouldkeepanopenmind.Trynottochangethe environmentaroundyoutosuityourpreferences.Instead, adapttoyoursurroundings,whichmakesthingsawhole loteasierforyoutoaccept.Shouldyougettheopportunity togoabroad,grabitwithouthesitation.Atthesametime, don’tforgetwhereyoucomefromandwhyyou’regoing onyourchosenpath.Maintainthepassion,workhard, holdontoyourmainprinciples,andyou’lldefinitelymakeit.

SchoolforhisinnovativeteachingmethodsattherecentEMASAwardceremony2011.

The EMAS (Exemplary Meritorious AcademicStaff) Award was inaugurated this year toawardstaffwhohavesuccessfullyimplementedinnovative techniques,pedagogies,methodsofdelivery, and/or technologies in teaching whichhave resulted in significant improvements instudentlearning.

For one month, lecturers and staff had sent innominations for lecturerswhostoodoutwith theirinnovativeteachingmethodsandmadeadifferencetostudentsgraspingasubject.
