Best Buddies Connect is a year-long initiative run by the International Students Services to support the integration of

international students into the campus, city and country. Through the BBC Fun Trip and Party, students are given opportunity to experience local culture, iconic landmarks, and public transportation system besides networking and getting to know senior students from the same countries and other nationalities. The BBC Workshop held once a month enabled the new

students to experience the sharing made by senior students and facilitators on various areas relevant to them including the usage of Bahasa Malaysia in their daily communication, enrichment of campus life, study skills and time management.

For the recent July / August intake, a Welcome Reception was also held to support the immersion of the largest cohort of international students into the Lakeside Campus. 4

Highlights

The CSI Go Volunteers team has been very busy since the beginning of August making a difference bit-by-bit. Beginning with 6th to 11th August where a group of 5 Taylorians led by Isaac Yap hosted 25 students from the Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIED) on their service learning tour in Malaysia to learn about community services done here.

Throughout their stay here, the HKIED students were given a tour around Klang Valley visiting places Putrajaya, KLCC, the National Park, National Monument and even Central Market. But the highlight of the tour were the visits to various Community Centers where they truly experienced life impacting moments serving and making friends with the members of these centers. The centers visited were Rumah Charis Old Folks’ Home, Spastic Children’s Association (SCASFT), Beautiful Gate Foundation and United Voice.

On the 15th July (Sunday), 66 students and 2 Advisors from Taylor’s University and 20 Students from Taylor’s College were present at the 1Malaysia for Youth (1M4U) launch.

1M4U, an initiative to anchor volunteerism and community services amongst the youth in Malaysia was officiated at KLCC,

The CSI Go Volunteers also took a few hours off their busy schedules to help out the Spastic Children’s Association (SCASFT) to paint a simple backdrop for their fundraiser concert on 22nd – 23rd September in Crystal Crowne Hotel, Petaling Jaya; performed solely by SCASFT students! The painting was 24ft long and 4.5ft high and coated with a layer of fluorescent solution to give it a glow effect under ‘black light’ and was completed on 7th September.

The Yes We Can! Project has 3 main objectives:• Raising Funtds for Prostheses Foundation of Thailand• Creating a culture of recycling among Taylorians• Breaking into Malaysia’s Book of Records

Beginning from September till November 2012, the CSI Go Volunteers targeted a total of 16,000 cans to create the biggest mural made of tin cans in Malaysia. The cans will then be sold to raise funds for the Prostheses Foundation of Thailand which has been using recycled aluminum to create parts in prosthetic limbs for children.

The CSI Go rallied a total of 90 volunteers to be involved in Faisal Cup. Every year, the Faisal Cup provides hundreds of urban poor children with the opportunity to play in organized games of football and netball. In addition to the practice sessions with trained coaches and 4 days of tournament, this year there were Peace camps and girls’ football. The CSI Go assembled Taylorians from both Lakeside and

Painting A Little Bit of Hope

Bringing Back Dignity Where It Is LostTaylor’s College Subang Jaya to come together to make the entire event a blast! A total of 441 boys and 243 girls between the ages of 10 to 16 are participating in this joyous event and around 2,000 people are estimated to be there to cheer the children on. The volunteers were invovled in 3 of the 4-day event which were 1st, 15th and 29th September.

On 14th July 2012, 44 Taylor’s Anime Society members made their way to the 36th Bon Odori Festival in Stadium Matsushita, Shah Alam. The stadium was packed and the Taylorians had to hold hands in order to not get lost in the crowd. And like in all other cultural festivals, food is a must and the Anime Society members definitely did not miss out on it as well!

Not missing out on the Korean Wave (Hallyu), the K-Generation Club pulled off their annual Hallyu Festival on 23rd September in The Grand Hall. This is the 3rd year in a row the festival has been held and with the current Korean craze, K-Gen Club managed to gather 320 K-Pop fans to come and experience the event where there was screening of K-Pop Music Videos, Hanbok wearing tutorial, Korean snacks and the highlight of the event; the dance competition. Taylor’s University Symphony Orchestra (TUSO) 3rd Annual Concert was held on 21 September in The Grand Hall! For the first time ever, TUSO collaborated with the Taylor’s University Dance Club and Latin & Ballroom Dance Club to put on a different touch and feel into their show this year with the theme EXPRESSIONS!

“EXPRESSIONS” is a dance themed concert featuring an array of dance repertoire, ranging from classical to contemporary dances such as tango, waltz and salsa. TUSO made another remarkable and exciting night by combining the two wonderful art elements together, MUSIC & DANCE! 50 Players, 2 Conductors completed 14 pieces of songs. The performance was truly captivating. They never failed to fascinate their 551 audience with their spectacular performance this year! One of the highlights of that night was the mind blowing solo performance by Andrew Ng Wen Hao, Guest Vionist who has taken master classes from many distinguished violin instructors and also a member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

Taylor’s Anime Society brought back the Taylor’s Asaban Festival on 1st & 2nd September after missing it for a year. This time the event saw a huge crowd of 500 people to The Grand Hall with Japanese Modern Pop and traditional culture. The event brought about modern Japanese pop culture during the day-time where Cosplaying, J-Rock bands, manga, computer and video games, figurines, card games and much more were featured.

The 1st night closed with a spectacular highlight featuring Japanese Electronic Band, “Haku”, powering up the entire hall with their electrifying performance. On the 2nd night, the outside of The Grand Hall was turned into a Matsuri (traditional festival) setting with Japanese lanterns, food, traditional games and a photobooth where you can take pictures donning a Yukata. Stay tuned for Asaban next year!

Scholars Give Back!

On 21st September, scholarship recipients from 2012 intakes organized the “Scholars@

Work Unite BBQ party” for about 200 participating scholars get to know one another and to vote for a T-shirt design that will be printed for those under the Scholars Development Programme. Themed “Back to Basics”, all scholars were encouraged to bring their own reusable plate, cup, fork & spoon in order to instill the “Go Green” value in them, rather than the usual convenient use of disposable cutleries that creates abundant waste.

The event went on smoothly after the sound system was sorted out and everyone had a great time enjoying the food prepared by their fellow scholars. The highlight of the evening was the sales of the IKEA sets (colourful plate, cup, fork, knife & spoon), which were sold at RM5.00 per set to those who didn’t bring their own or simply want to give to charity.

Student Feedback

Student Development Hub:I would like to express my gratitude to Student Development Hub for going

through the trouble to organize the LEAD series for us students. I’ve been to both days of the Leadership Development Series, and I really loved it!! For once, I feel that all (I mean ALL)

the speakers knew what they were talking about or sharing; All of them had something unique to share, and I never left either days empty handed. Some of them were really, really, really inspiring,

and it makes me look at leadership with a different perspective, especially since they are the ones with much more experience and have most likely explored the potentials of leadership. :D

(I initially thought that the forum session is going to be a bit boring, like theother forums I’ve attended - which is not organized by SDH. I was wrong.)

So once again, thank you very much to you and your amazing teamwho probably sacrificed their sleep to put this event together for us.

I truly salute you guys for the amazing experience, and I look forwardto any similar programmes SDH is going to organize. :)

Cheers!!

From the first week of classes, I would like to say that I like the way tutorials are being carried out this

semester compared to the previous ones. We are more encouraged to interact with each other and work as a team to learn. I hope Taylors

will incorperate such techniques to make the classes more interesting in the future for all subjects.

Also I would like to say that I am happy with the lecturers assigned to us so far.

Some lecturer’s even support the idea of converting fully into not printing notes and using softcopies of files to work in class using our laptops. I think this is a brilliant idea, by doing this we can avoid students wasting time to print notes queued up at the library or computer labs. This would avoid traffic in the lifts as well. There

is just way too much traffic on the lifts that we have to climb 6 - 8 floors up for class with heavy text books - NOT good for our back bone. I would

suggest all subjects to fully convert to using laptops to work rather than print out notes. Save the trees, let alone the benefits

Taylors get from it.

advices from Taylor’s Lakeside Campus Student Central and there is a staff who is

very friendly and caring. Good service and she even tries to cheer me up.

Thumbs up!

I am proud to be part of the hockey team throughout the season and I hope to be a part of it so

long as I am a student here. I’m pleased to see that the coaches and management put so much unprompted effort

into paving a great future for all of us who participate in such extra curricular activities

The new rennovated study areais very nice and clean.

I am very grateful about the Taylor’s security service. My mother accidentally left her

whole security managament took action immediately. They clamp the car to prevent people from stealing that car. Furthermore, they

turn the CCTV direction towards my mother’s car to monitor the whole situation in the control room. Plus, a security guard was stationed near

The whole security force acted out very professionally and helpful. Please keep up the good work!! And GOOD JOB.

The security management deserve my praise.

THANK YOU!!!Here, I would like to thank the security

department for returning my wallet. Few days ago, I lost my wallet in the food court. On that same day, Mr Jeffrey from

the control room called me and asked me to collect my wallet the next day within 6 hours! Luckily, all my documents included my IC

and cash were still there. I felt very grateful to Mr Jeffrey and Mr Saiful, who picked up my wallet, that not causing problems

to me. Here are some appreciation from me to them

I just dropped my purse within 20 minutes, the staff of security callled me for my purse. At first,

i did not realise that i dropped my purse until they told that i dropped my purse and someone had passed my purse to them. On 13th of July, I found my purse and the items including money

are still there. Thank you so much.

It is only my third day here, and I just lost my mobile phone today while going in KL. Fortunately, the person who found it (a taxi driver), was honest enough to

bring it back to me. He called a friend of mine with my phone, but we were unable to understand him. I went to the security, and they helped me to get my phone back.

Their work was really good, I really considered my phone as lost forever, but they brought it back to me, and I probably would have had to buy another one if they weren’t there. That is the reason why I’m sending this message, I was really well

taken care of, and by the time I got back from KL, I only had to wait30 minutes to get my phone back. They were really effective,

and guided me through the whole thing. I’m really grateful for this.

During the Asia Pacific Student Services Association (APSSA) Conference held in Manila, Philippines on 5-7 July, Ms Angela Pok (the Director of Student

Experience) and Ms Saw Bee Lian (Head of Student Central, Bursary and Financial Aid) presented a paper titled “Student Affairs & Technology Development”, with an objective of introducing and discussing the use of technology in managing student affairs, providing better services and enhancing students’ campus experience. The presentation drew some interested practitioners to explore the possibility of implementing online services in their campus with the aim of achieving higher student satisfaction. Ms Pok was also awarded the APSSA Fellowship Award during the Conference.

Organized by Student Central this time round, the buka puasa dinner was arranged at Kelantan Delights on 25th July 2012. To make this day more

meaningful, everyone came to work in their Malay attire. This really showcased a true Raya spirit amongst all at Student Experience. Not only that, everyone was invited to fast for the day as well. Just before Iftar, everyone had a little bit of fun by singing a Malay song of their choice. What do you know? We do have talented singers after all! To end the session, everyone received a box of pineapple tarts. What a sweet memory indeed for all!
