The progression of the city toward the bay has been a def in ing feature of Boston’s Historic NorthEnd for hundreds of years. The critical point where water meets soil has endured as an integral part of the culture, dispite the constant relocation. The approach to the Jazz Center site is marked by an unmistakeable view to the bay, no matter where the point of view. These views marked geometries that had to remain, and became integral to the development process of our project.

When asked to consider the most fundamental element of a residence, it seemed to me that the most fundamen-tal element was that which defines all space and form: material. It was in contem-plating this idea when I studied the way matter interacts with the spaces in contact with it. The range of simply implied space to the explicitly defined became the foundation of the apartment unit.

My partner and I perceived the city as an organic entity that is in continual growth and decay; creating and fill-ing in voids. In a manner that relates to the way an organic form is ‘grown’ the city mimics this using a unique material vocabu-lary. Focusing on the main materials of steel, stone, glazing, and organic mat-ter, we were able to study the way in which this site would ‘grow’ given its specific environment.
