After basic training around Britain Joe, together with the 5 th Suffolks, sailed for the Middle East in late October 1941 but were re-routed to Singapore after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour. They landed in Singapore on 29 January 1942 and after just 18 days of action they were captured by the Japanese after the surrender on 15 February. Following interment in Changi prison, they were transported to Thailand to work on the notorious Thai/Burma railway. Sadly, Joe died of vitamin deficiency and general debility on 23 August 1943. He is buried in Chungkai War Cemetery, Thailand. He left a widow Sylvia and a son Brian who was born in 1940.
