The Importance Of A Comfortable Night’s SleepThere are many reasons why getting a good night’s sleep is important to your health and happiness.
Did you know that a third of your whole life is spent in bed?
An uncomfortable bed can irritate and even worsen any existing neck, back or hip pains.
In 2012’s Great British Sleep Survey [*1], 67% of respondents claimed that bodily discomfort was the top thing that keeps them awake at night.
The Importance Of A Comfortable Night’s Sleep
A bad night’s sleep can have a negative effect on your day to day activity.
By not resting well, your problem solving and creativity skills can be greatly affected.
Sleep deprivation can also make it incredibly dangerous to drive.
Step 1: Choosing The Right Bedframe
Many cite the mattress as the most important element of a comfortable bed, but the frame is also incredibly significant as the foundation that holds it all together. A good frame needs to:
• Be made of a sturdy, strong material to stand the test of time
• Have room for the mattress to breathe – slats will allow for a steady airflow which maintains the hygiene of the mattress
• Be easy to clean - the frame will need to be clear of dust so that it is healthy for you to sleep on
Pine Beds
Choose pine wood for a bed frame that will last a long time.
Pine resists shrinkage, swelling and warping so it will stay stable.
It also has a great rustic, natural look and is easy to clean.
Step Two: Choosing the right mattress
The bedframe holds everything together, but to be truly comfortable, the mattress has to be just right.
Remember that a mattress should be changed every 8-10 years to avoid it from sagging or becoming unhygienic.
There are three main types of mattress worth considering: Open Coil, Pocket Sprung and Memory Foam.
Open Coil
The springs are arranged in rows and are all connected at the top and bottom.
The number of coils, thickness of wire and height of springs determine the firmness and weight distribution.
This style of mattress is good for orthopaedic benefits.
Pocket Sprung
A more luxurious option than the open coil, the pocket sprung mattress houses each spring in individual fabric pockets.
This mattress reduces any pressure points and shapes to your body.
Providing more independent support, this style better spreads the sleeper’s weight evenly.
Memory Foam
Made up of polyurethane foam, these mattresses adapt to temperature and weight.
Higher density models soften in reaction to body heat, whilst lower density ones are touch sensitive and quickly mould to the shape of your body.
Memory Foam
These mattresses encourage good blood circulation and contribute towards muscle relaxation.
They also help maintain correct posture by aligning the spine when lying on your side.
Step Three: Choosing The Right Pillows
If you are using the wrong type of pillow, you can end up with neck and back problems as well as restlessness.
If you suffer from allergies, you will want to look for a synthetic pillow as opposed to a down alternative.
If you sleep mostly on your front, you should choose a softer pillow such as a down or low-fill synthetic option.
If you sleep on your back, choose a pillow with medium thickness such as a high-fill down or medium synthetic.
Sleep mostly on your side? Choose a high-fill down pillow or medium-high fill synthetic.
Step Four: Choosing The Right DuvetNatural Vs Synthetic

• Filled with feathers and/or down (fine filaments)
• More luxurious choice
• Better thermal properties so need less filling for warmth
• Filled with synthetic fibres e.g. hollowfibre or microfibre
• Best suited for allergy sufferers
• Inherently dust and mite free
Tog Rating
‘Tog’ is the measurement of how warm your duvet is. It is measured in units of thermal resistance in a scale between 4.5 tog and 18 tog.
The higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet is.
Remember that the smaller the body, the easier it is to get warm in bed.
Choose duvet covers that are suitable to you in order for a comfy, cosy night’s sleep.
