August 31 2017 Week 7 Term 3
Wendy Lovell visits TPS to be Principal For A Day It was a pleasure to have Wendy visit our school today to be Principal for a day. The program runs annually across the state and Wendy chose us to visit this year. She was impressed by all our initiatives and by the excellent teach-ing and learning that she saw. Wendy farewelled the grade 3 and 4 students as they left for camp and then visited most classes as she toured the school. She wanted me to thank everyone for their warm reception.
So much has happened this fortnight………… I was fortunate to go on the Opportunity Plus excursion with some Grade 6 students last week. Thanks to Lions for organising this opportunity for students to visit local businesses. Much was learnt about job opportunities, training, employment and the individual businesses. Thanks to The Shepparton Sale Yards, Dyson’s Bus lines, Planright and Hotwire Mobile Auto Electrics. Bon voyage to the Grade 3 and 4 campers. We can’t wait to hear all about your adventures upon your return at 4pm on Friday! Thanks to the parents and Friends who organised our 2017 Father’s Day Stall. Students will have so many wonderful gifts to shower over their fathers and grandfathers on Sunday. I know that there have been some great works of art produced for fathers in the art room this fortnight too. Who’s noticed additions to the sensory playground? Thanks to Kerry and Dennis Meka for the new labyrinth. On our pupil-free day in Week 5, each of our teachers visited a school in Melbourne. The teachers visited in small groups and were able to share good teaching and learning practices. We came back with some new ideas and many confirmations that we are doing some great work here at Tatura PS. I want to acknowledge the schools that worked collaboratively with us on that day: Carlton Gardens PS, North Melbourne PS, Monmia PS and Footscray North PS. School Times: A reminder It has come to our attention that there are students arriving far too early to school in the mornings. Some are also staying in the grounds too late at night. In the mornings, it is important to note that supervision in the yard commences at 8:40 am. Families who need to drop their children off earlier than this should be using Before School Care. After school we require students to go straight home. After School Care is available for families that need to arrange care from 3:30pm. For more information about out of school hours care, please contact After the Bell on 9758 6744. Footy Colours Day I won’t have the opportunity to wear my Bulldogs jumper on the last day of term this year however all students and staff are welcome to wear their footy colours on the last day of term ...just bring along a gold coin donation with money going towards cancer research which Portia is supporting by donating her hair.

BUDDY SESSIONS
Foundation students are continuing work with their Grade 6 Buddies on a Monday afternoon. We have begun work on the laptops and are learning how to log on and log off our laptops, how to use them safely and care for them. We are enjoying revisiting some of our topics from Mathematics and sharing our learning with our Buddies.
GRADE 1/2 MULTIGROUPS
In Multigroups with Miss Maskell we have made some slime as part of our science work. With Mrs Fraser we have been looking at points of view and opinions and how there is no wrong answer as it is an opinion. You may like to play a game called ‘would you rather?’ with your children and see what they come up with!
SCIENCE NIGHT &
SCIENTWISTS
Our classes enjoyed an engaging session with Claire from Twisted Science last week. The session was “Flash Bang” and we made some interesting discoveries about light and sound. It was great to see many families come along to enjoy the family science night as well.
JUNIOR ACTIVITY DAY
On Friday September 15th we will be having a Junior Activity Day to celebrate our theme for this term of Past and Present. Classes will rotate around special activities based on this topic. This is NOT a dress up day!
The Envirokids are working hard to reduce waste at school so as of next term…
all students and staff will
take their recess/ lunch
rubbish home with them!!!
Any wrappers or packaging that is not recyclable will come home in lunchboxes for disposal. Students will eat both their recess and lunch inside, in an effort to reduce what our whole school sends to landfill each week. Of course the Envirokids strongly encourage all students and staff use reusable named containers. Don’t panic, as this is a great opportunity to get organised during the holidays and save some money at the same time!
Instead of buying individually packaged foods, buy in bulk and share into containers! Get out the recipe books to make some treats
and freeze. Have a washable sandwich container instead of using costly cling wrap! Each class has a 3 bin system: waste, compost and recycling. Next term the Envirokids will be replacing each classroom’s waste bin with a smaller one. Thanks for your support of this Envirokids’ initiative, in working towards reducing waste at TPS.
Sustainability/
Envirokids’ News
The Sensory Playground con-tinues to build with a new labyrinth, some star cut-outs on the old bars (look up) and the planting of some large bare-rooted trees. The rain came at the right time for our newly planted gardens.
We had an excellent day on the tree planting day. I am an Envirokid so I could help all day. I helped to put in the sprinklers and to sweep the dirt off the basket ball court. A reminder to be careful around the new plants with guards.

It’s been a very busy few weeks in the art room. Our whole school has been learning about the importance of dairy farming in our region and have been designing cows to be painted for a competition run by the Goulburn Campaspe Dairy Farmers Charitable Trust Inc. Each class has a chosen partnership that will enter their creatively decorated bovine into the draw for some wonderful prizes. Congratulations to the follow students whose designs have been chosen: Foundation/Buddies—James & Lachlan Year 1 Ross Marlee & Jemma Year 1/2A Lincoln & Cooper Year 1/2B Tristan & Levi Year 3/4A Riley & Ryan Year 3/4B Daniela & Lily Year 3/4C Darcee & Ava Year 5/6A Fayte & Pooja Year 5/6B Kade and Zach Year 5/6C Olivia & Hannah Junior School Council—Isabel & Ben

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
This Term, our school is participating in the Jump Rope for Heart program. During PE as well as at recess and lunch times, students have been jumping individually, with partners and in groups; improving their cardi-ovascular fitness, coordination and having a great deal of fun in the process.
In return for the resources and equipment the Heart Foundation provide our school in order to undertake this pro-gram, we are asked to fundraise towards The Heart Foundation’s valuable research into heart disease (which af-fects 2 out of every 3 families)
Our School’s goal is to raise $1000 for the Heart Foundation; something just $5 per student will help us achieve.
They now offer registration for fundraising online - It’s easy, safe and secure. Simply visit www.jumprope.org.au , select ‘Kids’ and follow the prompts to register your child through the Everyday Hero process that is linked to Tatura Primary School’s fundraising page. This page also allows you to email family and friends if they would like to con-tribute and no cash-handling is required.
Paper fundraising forms are also available if required.
Help your child to have fun, gain new skills and support the Heart Foundation at the same time. Let’s see how many tricks we can master and how much we can raise!
Join us on Thursday 21st of September for a whole school Jump Off to showcase our skipping skills and celebrate
our achievements.

Have you herd the good word about Painting Daisy? Primary aged students all around Northern Victoria are learning about the importance of the Dairy Indus-try to their local community through a creative, educational and fun filled program called ‘Painting Daisy.’ The program showcases the relevance of the Dairy Industry to the school community through art. The program is run during Term 3 in schools, and is a great literacy and visual arts task for the students. Students work in teams of two to paint or decorate a miniature cow, research a chosen topic on the dairy industry and write a ‘good news story’ reflecting their learning. Some of the topics the students may cover are as follows:
The jobs dairying creates in their local area The nutritional value of dairy The size of the dairy industry in their region and in Victoria A day in the life of a dairy farmer Dairy products and what we consume How dairying contributes to the local community.
The Painting Daisy program helps to link an important industry – the Dairy Industry - to young people that live in country towns and may not be aware of the connection between what’s being produced locally and the impact such an industry can have on our local community. The program is a fun way of allowing the students to investigate the importance of this industry to their region, it’s relevance to their local commu-nity and how industry, education and local communities can work together. John Hutchison – one of the Painting Daisy Program Managers said “In years gone by, children either lived on dairy farms themselves or they had family members that did. Through progressive changes especially in technology, the number of dairy farms has decreased, yet the size of the farms has increased. Many students now have little or no knowledge of what happens on these dairy farms, the smorgasbord of ca-reers available in the industry or the impact of local industry on their community. The program is a great way to educate rural students about what happens in their community and the importance of an industry that operates right on their doorstep.” In this inaugural year of the program, the Painting Daisy program is already running in fourteen schools around the Northern Victorian region, including Tongala Primary School, Dederang Primary School, Appin Park Primary School, Belvoir Special School, Echuca East Primary School, Ardmona Primary School, Girgarre Primary School, St Columba’s Primary School, Camp Hill Primary School, St Brendan’s Primary School, Tatura Primary School, Finley Pubic School, Kyabram P-12 College and Spring Gulley Primary School as well as ten schools in the Gippsland region. At the conclusion of the program in October, winning schools and student teams will be awarded. Stu-dents will be in the running for the following prizes:
$200 for ‘Best painted cow’ $200 for ‘Best good news story’ $200 for ‘Funniest class photo’
Locally, the project is funded United Dairy Farmers of Victoria and managed by Jaydee Events. Jaydee Events Pty Ltd is an agricultural based project and event management company with an educational focus. The company develops and delivers school – industry - education based programs. The result of these programs is improved industry aware-ness, improved image and understanding possible career pathways. For more information on Jaydee Events visit www.jaydee.net.au
