BackgroundTata Communications focus on 3 As (Access, Affordability, and Applications) helped

develop a wireless access strategy enabling seamless connectivity to enterprise and retail

    customers

In a geographically diverse and vast country like India, Tata Communications. envisioned wireless

technologies to facilitate in Providing coverage to areas difficult to connect

Improved range and connectivity in areas partially covered by wired network

By 2005 Tata Communications rolled out Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS)

(precursor to WiMAX) project in 50 cites to provide last mile wireless access.

By early 2007- With new spectrum policy, Tata Communications got license to implement pan IndiaWorldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX)

Provides better coverage in both LOS and Non-LOS conditions

Features like Orthogonal Freq Division Multiplexing, Adaptivemodulation etc provide better connectivity and performance

Standardized architecture leading substantially lower cost persubscriber

Line of Sight (LOS) and Near Line ofSight (Near LOS) constraint

    Limited capacity without sectorizationand cellularization

    Issues

3.3 GHz profile is not a standard WiMAX forum prof ile

Only 12 MHz spectrum released by regulator

Limited equipment vendors in this Frequency band

Site specific AIPs (Agreement in Principle) to deploy the

    Base Stations

    Import Licenses

Ensuring interoperability compl iance for base stations

    and subscriber stations

    High equipment cost

Clutter and terrain of Indian cities make RF planning dif ficult

Optimal use of 12 MHz spectrumMigration of existing MMDS customers to WiMAX network

    within the same operational spectrum

Deliver unique solutions tailored to suit Indian market

    Interoperability between different vendor equipment

Lower the base station and subscriber station cost

Expedite entry of 3.3 GHz profile into WiMAX forum profile list

In the Indian context, creation of a WiMAX ecosystem led to the following benefits-

    Benefits

    India Map- Source www.mapsofindia.com

Faster Go To Market- 6 month advantage over

setting up a city wide wireline network.

    Easy Scalability- Network expansion in

    Covering newer areas

Providing better coverage in existing wired networkareas

Off the Shelf Model-Installation time for

retail customers reduced to 60 mins from

    2-3 days.

    Robust Carrier Class Network- WIMAX

    offers efficient multiple access capability

    which provides carrier class network

    resulting in lower OPEX.

Higher Quali ty of Service (QoS)-Prioritization of the traffic as per userrequirement

To design better customer centricbroadband plans

    Improved services to business customers

New Business and Profit Models- Targeting new set

of customers e.g. ISPs demand WiMAX as a backhaul

    option

Better Return On Investment- Compared to other

access technologies like 3G, WiMax offers a profitable

business plan with relatively high levels of revenue,

coupled with a relatively low CapEx and OpEx
