Different actors can act towards a common goal if commitment, ownership & capacity are there

The most important question is HOW CAN WE DO IT?

Page 5: Task Force for Developing Integrated Approaches SCN meeting February 27, 2007.

How can we focus on needs of families?• Plan from bottom-up to the

extent possible

• Recognize that different countries and districts within countries have different needs and generate different demands

• Stay goal-focused

How can we work at all levels, and at scale? (2)

• Do what each group does best in coordinated fashion

• Build strategic alliances• Harmonize donors and agencies,

at global and national level

How do we agree on common goals and work together?

• Recognize this is about people, who need to be motivated to take right decisions and actions

• Recognize that facilitation and coordination are needed, and that they take time and cost (a little) money

Page 9: Task Force for Developing Integrated Approaches SCN meeting February 27, 2007.

How do we build widespread commitment and ownership?

• Engage national & global leaders

• Engage wider development community

• Foster country focal groups and learning teams who work together

• Increase sustainability and commitment towards nutrition by building regional initiatives

“It is about personal relations”

• Know each other

• Communicate with each other

• Trust each other

• Commit to each other towards common goal

Next steps

• Develop set of case studies from past and on-going experiences in countries and from regions

• Provide framework and model approaches for catalyzing and building convergence and commitment in countries and regions

Page 13: Task Force for Developing Integrated Approaches SCN meeting February 27, 2007.

Next steps (contd.)

• Hold working session within six months to– Develop typology of integration efforts– Define necessary actions & capacities for

integration at different levels • Global (donors, technical community)• Regional• National• Sub-national/provincial• Community

– Discuss key countries to begin “proof of concept” work

We need to work through some issues…

• Self-interest that interferes with creation of common space

• Appetite for “show-and-tell” that detracts from collaborative environment

• Tendency to blame others

• Fear of engaging with others (especially private sector)
