Task DA-07-04

• Title: Development of scenarios or use cases that demonstrate the value of Sensor Webs to the GEOSS SBAs. Specific domains that can benefit from Sensor Web are for instance Disasters, Health, Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Water. A Sensor Web is a system of distributed sensors that can be deployed to monitor and explore new environments.

• Output: The primary output will be the design of a distributed geospatial infrastructure for Sensor Web services and test implementations of Sensor Web enablement. This will be supported by a development of standards for the use of Sensor Webs

Task Description

• A geospatial information infrastructure connecting heterogeneous in situ sensors and remote sensors are linked, shall be defined. This includes the definition and design of the Sensor Web Communication- and Information layers.

• The Task should evaluate the applicable standards for the application of a Sensor Web based approach for the different GEO SBAs

• To provide a mechanism to register and categorise Web services s service registry shall be designed.

• Case studies shall be designed as demonstration projects for at least 3 SBAs

Status• Management: The Meraka Institute

(managed by the CSIR) is willing to be a Lead Organisation and the Task Point of Contact. Andrew Terhorst initiated the task and leadership has been given to Terence van Zyl of the Meraka Institute.

• The first workshop was held in February 2007 in South Africa.

• Initial Focus in on Disaster SBA – Fires; discussion on a water case study has been initiated.

Status - continued• Water Resources Observation Network (WRON)* is a

potential case study, initially a contribution of Australia. Efforts are underway to develop a reference model for the WRON architecture.

• A third area under discussion is Sensor Web Enablement of the Argo Buoy network. This is in a very early stage of discussion

• Meraka Institute is developing a sensor registry service for cataloging/inventorying sensors and sensor systems. This would be the South African contribution.

• *water resources observation network (WRON): an information system that can tell us how much water we have now and expect to have in the future, as well as who is entitled to use it and under what conditions.
