Task 7

Audience research analysis All of the questions on this questionnaire were closed questions. I chose to do this because I already had some ideas for the magazine but by making people choose their favorite, it helps my finalise my plans and can help decide the difficult decisions. AGE: When asking students at college to do my questionnaire, the most popular result for age was 16. The second most popular was 17. This result ensures i have asked the right age group about my magazine because my target audience is teenagers around the age of 16-18. It will also give me confidence in the choices I make. GENDER: The majority of the students that answered the questionnaire were female. The 9:6 ratio is a positive because im planning on targeting teenage girls rather than boys because as a teenage girl myself, i have knowledge of what will be successful in a magazine. Getting results from 6 boys broadens the responses and i think will make the magazine look more mature instead of a purely girly magazine which are normally aimed at preteens (12- 13yr olds). It also highlights what topics are favorited amongst teens in general. ETHNICITY: The majority of students were white. At a 7:4:4 ratio, there was some diversity but having results based on white teenage girls is a strength because it’ll help me target them better. Although some say it better to target all ethnicities equally, magazines are more successful if they target a specific race due to cultural differences. (I am white so i can base parts of the magazine on my own preferences too.) COLOUR SCHEME: Asking students about a prefered colour scheme will show me which of my ideas are most popular. Bright colours was the most appealing colour scheme to the students while black and white was the least. I am glad about this result because it has connotations linked with pop music magazines. HOW OFTEN DO YOU LISTEN TO POP: I asked this question because the questionnaire was handed out to people i did not know personally. I needed to ensure the results i was going to get were off Pop music fans. If the majority of the results were off rock fans my end magazine wouldnt fit the genre. 8 people listen to pop music

Audience research analysis

All of the questions on this questionnaire were closed questions.

Getting results from 6 boys broadens the responses and i think will make the magazine look more mature instead of a purely girly magazine which are normally aimed at preteens (12-13yr olds). It also highlights what topics are favorited amongst teens in general.

ETHNICITY: The majority of students were white. At a 7:4:4 ratio, there was some diversity but having results based on white teenage girls is a strength because it’ll help me target them better.  Although some say it better to target all ethnicities equally, magazines are more successful if they target a specific race due to cultural differences.(I am white so i can base parts of the magazine on my own preferences too.)

COLOUR SCHEME: Asking students about a prefered colour scheme will show me which of my ideas are most popular.

8 people listen to pop music every day, this is good because they clearly have a strong interest in the genre. 4 listen to pop every week, not as often as the other 8 but shows they do enjoy the genre. Only 1 person said occasionally and 0 said no often. This furthers my previous research of finding out that POP music is the most popular among teens.

SETTING: I wasn’t sure where i should take photos for my magazine but by asking this question it gave me an idea of what other people prefer. Urban(6) and plain(5) backgrounds were the most popular however because the photos have to be taken at college, I can't use an urban background. The other responses of rural (3) and educational (2) are what i plan to use in other parts of my magazine for example the double page spread.

Page 2: Task 7

MODEL: I wanted to find out which gender model would be most popular on the front cover because although i’m planning on doing a female targeted magazine, females could often enjoy seeing attractive males on the cover. A female was the most popular (7 votes), male had 5 and i decided to add another option of both (which got 3). The both option was the least popular which makes me think i’ll include different people on the contents page or double page spread. A female model will be convenient to do because i can just use one of my friends at college.

SOLO OR BAND: This question helped me decide what type of pop music i would present - a band or a solo artist. The results showed that a solo artist was most popular however im thinking about featuring a band on the contents page because there was only a 3 vote difference

PRICE: The price question wasn’t as important as the others, i could take an educated guess on what it should be priced however because i personally do not purchase magazines i felt it would be wise to ask to check. The most popular result was £2 and is the price i will choose for my magazine.

ETHNICITIES: This question helps me decide what type of people will be prefered in a magazine targeted to a white teenage girl. White was the most popular. The option for mixed got 4 votes and i also like the idea of having different ethnicities in the magazine so i will make sure i include different people within the magazine.

ARTICLE TOPICS: This was one of my major questions. I wasnt particulary sure of what to have as my article topics but artists, festival reviews and fashion/makeup were the most popular in a 6:5:3 ratio.

MODEL MAKEUP: I asked this question because there is a large variety of makeup styles possible for a pop music magazine and i wasn't sure which to use. The choice of noticeable was most popular with 6 votes and it the one i am going to use. If an option like over the top or none was most popular it wouldnt fit in with the pop musc genre. No makeup is what i expect from a classical music magazine and over the top has connotations of rock genre.

OTHER GENRES: I felt it was important to know which other genre was the most popular (if any) because they could possibly feature in the music magazine.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD IMAGE: This question helps me decide what type of images will be most successful. I quite like the idea of ‘in the moment’ shots and it was the most popular choose along with a photo shot type double page spread. A close up of the artist was not popular and does not conform to typical music magazine conventions.

MAIN COVER LINE: I think i will use all of these topics in my magazine however by knowing which was most popular (artist with 8 votes) i know which is going to be the main and which are just cover lines.
