URBAN

Page 4: Task 4 idea development

Reflection Photography- From using glass in shop windows, or from a simple drinking glass or water on the floor you can get great reflections of the Urban environment.

A tall monument from a city is good to reflect as it is well know and even if it is flipped the other way it will still be recognizable.

A reflection of a person makes an interesting photograph as the person looks like they are walking into each other. It will explore different types of people in one particular environment.

Black and white makes the shadows stand out but they look as good in colour too. Black and white brings out the urban side to the photograph.

Double Exposure- This is a great way to show movement and contrast in one photography.

It can show different sides to one image.

Lots of similar images layered over the top can create a calming effect, however different images layered over the top of each other can create a fast rush feeling.

Joiner- Joiners look creative because of the layering of many many images. It makes the display of the photograph look interesting and it will attract peoples attention.

Joiners look more interesting if you slightly change the colour or the shadow to just a few layers making it look slightly 3D and interesting.

Inspiration Don Craig

• Don Craig has produced many multiple exposures that he had seen around in the streets and by the harbor. The street photography is more what inspired me. He photographs tourists taking pictures of a monument in a city then combines the monument and the tourists together to create a double exposure. These double exposures express what the subject is seeing so you can view it in your eye view too. Some parts are made slightly darker to make them stand out and the black and white makes it more mysterious but connects all the exposures together.

• He is a contemporary artist that uses non-traditional techniques.

Inspiration Tom White

• Industrial Romance Double Exposure is a closer metaphor to memory rather than essence. It pairs images from Tom Whites "Industrial Romance" series which are lots and lots of images of New York layered together to make a soft textures feel to the photograph. “Memory tends to be more detailed than essence. By an instinctive selection and editing process, I pair images which support a greater idea. And as my work is influenced by patterns, so also patterns help us recall memories,” -Tom White.

• These city images layered so much to create a blur is not only interesting but calming, the colours and soft shapes create a soft noise memory.

Inspiration Stephanie Jung

• This is German photographer Stephanie Jung work. They are multiple exposures Japanese cities – Tokyo, Osaka, Shibuya and Nara. Each frame captures so much movement and when they are exposed together they create a messy and fast movement within the photographs. I like her work as it blurs out a lot but you can still make out the shapes of people, cars and buildings. The different colours merge together to make new colours and lights are elongated further.

Theme and Technique

I am going to choose Urban Environment as my theme and focus on the busy hustle in cities and also look at the buildings surrounding that urban environment. There will be movement from the rush of people and cars moving through the city environment. I am going to use the double exposure technique like Stephanie Jung to create my photographs. I will explore the use of double exposure and see what the effect of layering images will do to a photograph. I will develop my knowledge by seeing if using similar images over the top create a better feel or using two contrasting images. I will take many photographs in the streets of a busy city and maybe some to contrast it in a derelict house, but when it comes to post production I am going to layer many single photographs to create one photograph, this will finalise my idea. I like the idea of a multiple exposure as can either contrast between images or make the photograph feel like it has some movement in it which I think will work well in a busy urban environment. It can also feel like the city is crawling in around you, this is one feeling you could get in a busy place. Multiple exposures can give off different feelings depending on how they are done, this will be interesting to see how the urban environment will be portrayed in my own photographs.
