Task 4

Veganism: A philosophy and way of living. Veganism is a widely controversial way of living that seeks to exclude the exploitation of animals for food, clothing, testing and entertainment. Veganuary is a global campaign that launched in the UK in January 2014, to help encourage people to try becoming vegan for January. The campaign raises awareness of Veganism. Veganism not only helps to reduce the suffering of animals and helps the planet, but it also improves personal health. Due to the fact vegans do not eat animals or animal based products, they must find the essential nutrients they need from plant-based sources, vegan alternatives and fortified foods. Due to a vegan’s lifestyle of avoiding meat and dairy, alternatively they will eat lots of fruit, vegetables, nuts, and pulses. This means they will get plenty of the nutrients they need. However, vitamin B12 is a vitamin that can be hard for vegans to obtain as it is found in meat, fish, dairy, and eggs. Therefore, vegans can be more susceptible to B12 deficiency. Although b12 is added to fortified foods such as breakfast cereals, plant milks, and soy products. A supplement of B12 is very important, and people must make sure they do not lack it in their diet. Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient for our red blood cells, nerve function, and is vital for DNA synthesis in our cells. Not only do vegans tend to be well informed of what their body needs and what their food contains, but animal-based products can help to prevent the most severe diseases such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, diverticulosis and E. coli infections. A vegan diet can also be more beneficial to women as PMS symptoms become less intense or disappear altogether. This is due to the elimination of dairy from their diet. Veganism helps the environment and helps to stop excess greenhouse gases. Over 70 billion land animals such as cows, pigs and chickens are bred, all of which need vast amounts of food and water, they emit methane and other greenhouse gases and produce mountains of physical waste. These animals are then farmed and killed for food every year. This does not include sea creatures and other animals bred for fur and skin trades. In 2006, the UN calculated that the combined climate change emissions of animals bred for their meat were about 18% of the global total – more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together.

Veganism is a widely controversial way of living that seeks to exclude the exploitation of animals for food, clothing, testing and entertainment. The meat industry has a big impact on the environment and how to use our natural resources. Agriculture uses about 70 percent of the world’s available freshwater, and one third of that is used to grow the grain fed to livestock. It takes 2500 gallons of water for 1 pound of beef. 70% of the World’s grain harvest is fed to livestock while the other 30% are used for the population of the entire world. Only 50% of grain harvest could feed all the starving people in the world if only people would stop eating meat.
