This is an extreme close up of Banks’

eyes with heavy black eye makeup to

add drama and focus. The shot has a

moving white dusty filter overlaid to

give an aged effect. The shot has

been edited into greyscale which

further adds to the aged effect. The

shadows have been lightened to grey

which is done in post-production. The

composition involves Banks being

placed to the right of the screen,

using the rule of thirds composition.

This is a close up. Heavy

drum beats begin here as

Banks moves her head

slowly, ignoring the beat.

She is centrally placed with

a dark plain background,

putting all emphasis on her.

She is fully in focus with

lighting from above,

(butterfly lighting) evident

by the facial contouring.

She is giving direct address

to the camera.

This shot it still a close up.

The shot is backlit and

therefore Banks is

underexposed but the shot

appears stylized. Banks is

oriented to the bottom right

of the shot and this uses

the rules of thirds

composition to be effective.

The heavy beat runs

throughout and she

appears to be wearing a

jacket of some sort.

This shot it still a close up,

although it’s being pulled in

and out of focus via the

camera. This is deliberate

and gives a stylized effect.

Meanwhile, Banks is

staring down and moving

slowly- perhaps slow

motioned .The background

is again, plain and a dark

which leaves emphasis on

Banks.

This is also a close up of

Banks’ face in greyscale

facing horizontally to the

camera and giving direct

address to the camera.

This shot is similarly backlit

although this one has the

addition of a stylized lens

flare that appears to

Page 2: Task 2- Conventions of a music video

This is a mid shot of Ellie which

is out of focus. I feel this is

deliberate to add a sense of

mystery to the identity. The

camera pans left. The toning of

the shot has the shadows with

a cool blue tone while the skin

has been left warm in tone. Ellie

is wearing a simple, non-

descript black dress.

This is a close up of

Ellie’s Dr Marten boots

treading along the

ground. The camera

tracks in and remains

at the same distance

from her while she

moves. The clip

appears to have been

slowed in motion to

give a dramatic effect.

This is a close up of Ellie’s

centrally positioned face as

she sings. A large aperture

and shallow depth of field

has been used to create an

intensely blurred and

bokeh’ed background. This

leaves all emphasis on the

subject while still hinting at

the setting. Ellie is wearing

neutral coloured makeup

with her hair curled

naturally.

This is a low angled mid

shot facing up at Ellie as

it pans around Ellie,

exaggerating the height

of the surrounding trees

and amount of space

around her. She sings

into space and uses her

hands for emphasis. She

remains on the spot to

the left of the shot and

the camera moves

around her.

This is a higher angled

mid shot facing side on

to Ellie as she walks in

slow motion with no eye

contact to camera. She

is tracked by the camera

as she walks, which is

probably done using a

steadicam due to the

smooth movement. The

background is slightly

out of focus which keeps

most emphasis on Ellie.

This is a long shot of a female figure

standing by a lake facing away from

the camera so that her identity is

hidden. The shot has internal framing

from the bushes in the foreground

which frame the shot. The female is

placed slightly to the right of the shot

and just above the horizontal mid

point, making use of the rule of thirds

compositional technique. The internal

framing through the leaves gives the

impression that she is being watched.

This is a mid shot of the

same female but this time

from behind. A small

aperture (large depth of

field) has been used so

that the setting remains in

focus. The camera remains

still throughout this shot

with the only movement

from the hair, rippling water

and clouds. The shot

appears to have a warming

filter placed on it.

This is a mid shot of the

same female but side on in

a new setting. The reeds in

the foreground are out of

focus while she is clear,

emphasising her as the

subject. She is clutching

what appears to be a book

while her hair looks

naturally tousled. Makeup

is not visible. The shot is

still but with natural hand

held movement included to

eliminate jarry transitions.

This is a cut away to light

peeking through dappled

leaves which create star-

like light leaks. This is

effective as it creates

atmosphere and fits with

the colour scheme of the

other shots. It also breaks

up the continual shots of

the subject and can create

an effective interval.

This is a close up of the

female’s face. It appears to

have a filter on it containing

magenta as shadows are

tinted a warm pink colour.

The shot is still and this

leads me to speculate if a

tripod has been used. The

female’s hair is gently

blowing in the wind while

her face remains in direct

address with the camera,

although motionless and

distant.

This is a mid shot of Birdy looking

down towards the floor while

singing. She is surrounded by a

natural urban scene and wears

casual, warm clothes that don’t

attempt to hug her figure. There

seems to be a warming filter on

the shot. The camera tracks back

as Birdy walks forwards and

there appears to have been a

slight slow motion added to make

the movement seem less jerky

and more dramatic.

This is a mid shot where Birdy

is centrally placed. Symmetry

is only broken by the man

running up behind her which

creates a two-shot where

their relationship becomes

apparent through their

interaction. A greeny filter has

been added which

exaggerates the urban feel.

Birdy keeps her eyes off of

the camera as it continues to

track backwards.

This is an abstract shot of

lights from the fairground

of the next scene which

have been given a line of

symmetry vertically and

centrally. They move and

disappear into this central

‘fold’ which create an

abstract, surreal effect.

This is used as a

transition into the next

location.

There appears to be a

cooling filter over this shot

which brings out cyans and

magentas, both typical of the

fairground setting. Double

exposure has been used

and we can see both Birdy

and a fairground shot

simultaneously as they have

been layered with a blend

mode.

This is a cutaway to an

object of significance,

where brightly coloured,

vivid and sparkly objects

are all apparent. They

add context and

legitimacy to the scene.

The slight hand-held

movement is retained

and has obviously not

used a tripod. This will

eliminate jarry transitions

between shots.

Page 5: Task 2- Conventions of a music video

This is a dark, backlit long shot

where Birdy is placed to the left.

There are leading lines from the

path up to the top of the shot. The

camera tracks in and follows Birdy

as she walks. It appears to have

been slow motioned slightly as her

movements appear fluid and soft. A

cooling filter has undoubtedly been

added to make the scene appear

cold and uninviting which fits with

the dark, harsh scenes and

awkward, distant body language.

This is a headshot of Birdy,

again where she is placed to

the left of the shot. This time

she appears to have been

lighted from the front and

above as her face appears

contoured. She is surrounded

by out of focus blue flowers

fitting with the colour scheme.

A large aperture and shallow

depth of field has been used

to get this effect where the

focus is on her.

This is a mid shot of Birdy

which I can tell has been lit

from the left of the shot as an

obvious shadow is visible the

right of the shot. Light flickers

across the wall in waves

which stylizes the shot. The

camera is still, which is

probably due to the use of a

tripod. Birdy remains still and

the only movement is that of

the flickering light waves.

Sunlight peeks through

the trees and creates a

lens flare in this shot

which overlaps Birdy.

This creates a stylized

shot. Birdy is backlit

which removes detail

from her face but

highlights her outline.

This shot is a cutaway to a

window sill littered with dust.

This is atmospheric and this

is exaggerated by a strong

cooling filter, creating an

uninviting and cold feel to the

shot. A tripod has been used

as the shot is completely fixed

still. As with the other indoor

shot, the theme of the light

flickering in waves is

continued. This creates a

cohesiveness to the overall

video.
