TYPES OF TRANSPORT

We will learn about the first ways in which humans travelled, and then we will look at the way we travel now. We will learn about travelling on land, on water and in the air.

TRANSPORT ON LAND

Animal Transport - People use various animals—camels, donkeys, horses, dogs, etc. —for transport, either for riding or to pull wagons and sleds. Other animals, including dogs, help blind or disabled people.

Carts, Wagons and coaches - usually horse drawn, were sought to transport goods as well as people.

The Bicycle - The penny-farthing was invented as a way of increasing the maximum speed.

The Steam engine – was invented over 200 years ago.

The First Motor car - was like a two seat carriage with three wheels. It was developed 10

The oldest wheel that archaeologists have found came from an ancient civilization in the Middle East. It is more than 5 000 years old. The wheel is one of the most important inventions ever made, and it has helped people to travel faster and further than possible on foot. It has also made it possible to transport big loads. There are many different kinds of transportation that use wheels. Some are drawn by animals, like wagons and carriages, and others are drawn by people, like the rickshaw. Cycles also have wheels, whether it is one, two three or more. Since the end of the 19th century motorcars with wheels have transformed human travel forever.

Wheels through the ages

As shown in the picture above, early humans realised that round objects could be easily moved by rolling them. Later humans advanced this rolling technique into the transportation of large objects on cylindrical logs. The invention of the wheel allowed a rolling log to be placed through a hole in a wheel to create a cart. Chariot racing was influential in the evolution of the wheel as they allowed chariots to move much faster. The invention of air filled rubber tyres allowed wheels to be much faster and stronger, ultimately redefining transportation.

Thousands of years ago, the wheel was invented. The first wheels were simply solid discs, carved from one lump of wood. The wheel changed the way that people travelled and transported things. Before the wheel was invented, the amount of things people could transport over long distances were limited. Today wheels are used in many forms of transportation such as cars, bicycles and even skate boards.

Air Transportation Through History

The first flight was in a hot air balloon. Over 200 years ago.

Wright brothers invented the first aeroplane – in America in 1903.

Airship- ideal for such uses as covering sporting events, advertising.

Modern forms of air transport - space shuttles.

Conclusion

17

All these changes in air, sea and land regarding transport have shown the advancements of the human race as we evolved in a surprising way and form part of history. Note that we still use some transports of ancient cultures but adapted it to the demands of today's world.
