Analysis of an NME magazine: Dizzee Rascal

•Masthead

•Flash

•Colloquial and informal language (“…wowee zowee it’s on!”)

•Name is main focus of the magazine- big, bold, shadowed typing (sans seriff font)

•Looking at the camera (illusion that he is looking at the reader/viewer)

•Header (seriff font)

•Consistent use of black, white and red- makes it appear professional (coverline)

•Extra advertisement and insight of other articles

•Long shot. Close-up (can see his body position due to how he is posing).

•What he is wearing (e.g. chain, trainers etc) suggests the genre of the music he makes/produces- iconography

•Barcode, price and date issued is small, unnoticeable

•Footer- suggesting other artists the magazine concentrates on. Suggests different genres

•Quote used from anecdotes- from interview (gives us insight on the article and what it’s about)

•Colloquial language (“…man!”) & sans seriff font

readers know

•Empty beer bottles, glasses and a stereo box suggests a party that many teenagers have- maybe towards the target audience of this

article

•Also supports the artists type of music as it is mainly used in a party atmosphere

•Article of the artists point of view and how he became successful; hence the title

NME magazines have a target audience with the age range of 15-25 years, in which only27% are female and 73% male. This shows that a vast amount of males are moreinterested in the music industry compared to females.

It is most likely that the readers of NME magazine have attended at least one, or more,pop/rock music concerts as roughly 80% of NME readers feel that music plays anImportant part within their lives as it introduces them to new bands, artists and widenstheir taste in music.

The social classes of the target audiences vary from higher, middle and working class.As well as this, 26% are full time college students, 34% are working full time and 18% areworking part time, whom have been reading NME magazines for the last, or over, 3years.
