Theme or focus of images These photographs are a joint work between Dominik Smialowski and Monika Prus . Dominik is the photographer ad Monika who is the illustrator the project that they are working on is called missing garden . This project is meant to people looking back at their childhood memories . These photos are done by having one person stand at the centre of the camera and have a blackboard at the back of them . The black board will then be draw on with images will have something that is meant to relate to the persons past

For example in the first pitcher it has a woman pushing away two walls of Lego blocks although by first glance this may look like it is a happy pitcher I think that artist used it to show a struggle in her past and that she is trapped by something that she is trying to get away from . She also has a very stern look on her face this might symbolise how she struggling to try to get out . The ways that she is not looking at the camera could show that she is concentrating too much at the task at hand to worry about the camera .It also may mean because it is building blocks her problems are bulling up on her and because it is now taller than her they are now too thought for her to control. The lighting of the photo looks very dark this might be a way of the artists has done to make the images have a slight tone of depression but there is light in the centre which could mean that there is still hope that things will get better this is a recurring thing throughout this artist work.

The next image is a photo of a man who looks to be doing some sort of work which is shown to be

Page 7: Task 1 illastration

boring that is why he must be daydreaming as shown by the illustration. The message that appears to come across from this photo is that the man in the photo is thinking back to when he was a child when he did not need to work as hard and that he can do anything he could dream of being .The expressions on the man's face is very sierras but looks like he has a bored look as well I do think that this particular artist can capture emotions brilliantly. I do feel that there is too much space in the background that has been remained empty.

The third picture is of a woman who is blowing bubbles the reason for this is she might be relieving an expressions that she was doing when she was a child. Her clothing is a shirt and tie this could suggest that she has some sort of an important job .This might mean that she is doing something from her child hood in which she is unable to do now she is working.

The next image is probably the happiest emotion that is given off out of any of his work .in the photo it has a young woman who is butterfly catching but the butterfly net is broke and she is smiling. I think the broken net is meant to symbolise that she is now free just like the butterfly's our . This is backed up by the emotion that the modal has when we look at her which to me looks like joy . I think that all of these signs are meant to symbolise that she has final broken free from something and that it is a huge relief that she has done it.

Next has a pitcher which I think he is meant to be from high school and in the background is what looks to be a teacher shouting at him. Also to the left of him shows music notes this means that he is not really paying any attention to what she is saying this could be a way of saying that young people do not pay attention to thinks that are going on around them. But I don't entirely think the artist is saying that that is a bad thing.

The last one is my favourite out of all of their work, I say this because it is the one that appears to stand out the most. I also would say that it is the sadist out of all of their work. In the photo it has a man that is surrounded by balloons which is usually recognised as being used at either a party or celebration. But yet the expressions on the man's face looks like depression and isolation , also the way that his arms are crossed I think that this is meant to mean that he is uptight and maybe nerves . I think the artist has done this to attempt to show that in this man's childhood he has been at a party in which something bad has happened in it which he is still clinging to even in his older years. My favourite part of this photo is the man's eyes I feel as though that they give off a lot of different emotion to us.

Composition

All of the photos have been done by being zoomed in on the person’s torso and face I the main reason for this is because the artist wanted the viewer to focus on the facial expression of the person and the background. Also it is zoomed in far enough so the viewer cannot see the edge of the blackboard it is also focused on the perfectly so you can see both the person and background clearly. Each of the photos is shot slighting lower than head high with the camera tilted up. They have also set up what seems to be two different light souse that are aimed from both the centre left and right

Page 8: Task 1 illastration

which is aimed at the person’s chest.

Techniques usedShutter speeds- this would be anywhere between 1/160 to 1/400 but it is hard to tell I don’t think that the artist would need to worry about the aperture that much so it would be somewhere near the F12 mark the ISO will be needed to be upped slightly to maybe 200 .

Rule of thirds- I don’t think the artist has really thought about the rule of thirds In his work most because when adding the lines, I found that most of the intersect lines did not seem to show the part of the image that we are met to focus on.

Depth of field – The depth of field we can see the background very well in the image which we need to see because the drawing is on the blackboard in the background to do this the artist will have the aperture close to F12 or somewhere around this.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

I think that how the artist captures emotion is very good I like how the modals are in the perfect position to blend in both them and

the background together I think that the lighting is used well to help set the mood

Weaknesses

I think that some of the background is too plain on shots the artist could of added more
