What is the private sector?
Businesses that are not owned/controlled by the government.
1. Tesco – supermarket – generate their revenue by following the cost leadership strategy (sell high volumes at low prices)
2. Apple – multinational technology company – generate their revenue with the differentiation strategy (sell their products at a very large price, which is justified by the quality of the goods)
3. Primark – large UK retail store – cost leadership – significantly cheaper than most other retail stores

What is the public sector?
Companies that are run/funded by the government.
1. Downend Secondary School – education 2. Police stations – law enforcement3. NHS – provides free/low-cost health care for UK residents
All funded by the government or public (through things like taxing etc.)

What is the voluntary sector?
Firms which are not run by the government and also do not exist to generate profit (non-profit organizations and charities).
1. Community groups – clubs which cater for local residents – can apply for grants
2. Oxfam – charity focusing on poverty – rely on donations and fundraising3. Barnardo’s – charity which provides care for vulnerable children – donations
and fundraising
