Tarot Unlocked The Tarot of the Human Experience

This tarot deck and the accompanying book have been designed to accomplish three tasks: 1) introduce a modern, comprehensive approach to the concepts of each card and the process of reading cards, 2) teach people who are interested how to read tarot cards, and 3) improve the relationship between tarot and astrology. Tarot has a long and interesting history with many new, modern interpretations of the art of the cards since the 1980s, but few advances in the content that would reflect current times. Most decks today still use the King/Queen court card identifiers and some traditional symbol for the suits (a wand or spear for fire, a sword for air). The Tarot of the Human Spirit acknowledges the scheme of the system of the tarot while modernizing it thoroughly and thinking of it comprehensively. All Major Arcana cards have key words to reflect their essential archetype instead of esoteric historical names (Rebelling Against Expectation for The Devil and Asserting Your Will for the The Chariot). The Minor Arcana are identified by their base element (Air, Earth, Fire, and Water) and given a gerundive verb to reflect action (literal or metaphorical) that the querent needs to complete when they draw the card (Ace of Air - Breathing, 5 of Earth - Climbing). Each suit follows an linear and cyclical energy pattern, moving from 1 to 10 to 1 (again). The court cards have been rethought to identify archetypical roles in life using geographic direction (east, west, north, and south, with each one representing an element - east/fire, west/earth, north/thought, south/feelings), so instead of the King of Earth, there is the Energy of the Earth to the West (earth/earth), best expressed by The Farmer. Energy of Air to the West (air/earth) is The Architect.

This new approach is designed to make it easier to learn how to read the cards, which includes a break down of the meaning, message, and sample use of a card in a position in a reading to help students begin putting the cards to use. The book also includes a worksheet approach that asks readers to connect each card with the key moment in his/her life that mirrors the meaning of the card. Not only does the book reflect a systemic design, it is also designed to be a learning tool. Lastly, as a professional astrologer, I have long believed that the two systems work well together, but like dogged adherence to the old meanings, attempts to connect the tarot and astrology have been in-congruent at best, largely because the system of astrology, as it is normally presented does not have a convenient 22 (Major Arcana cards), 56 (Minor Arcana cards), 78 (total cards) scheme. In my book Astrology Unlocked I demonstrate an expanded rulership scheme that assigns co-rulers to 10 houses while leaving the Moon and Sun as individual rulers of the 4th and 5th house. I did this to balance the masculine feminine energies of the houses and to take advantage of useful modern energy when casting client charts. Now there are a perfect 22 rulers to match the 22 cards of the Major Arcana, allowing the two systems to merge at their most powerful meanings (Energy Points in astrology and the Major Arcana in tarot).

Joint Venture or Artist Commission

When I first began this journey, I was commissioned solely as a photographer and designer. However, as the project progressed I began to take more of an interest and outspoken role therefore the commissioner proposed a joint venture.

After much deliberation and a meeting with a lawyer to discuss the cost and benefits, I decided to take the plunge and participate in the joint venture. The email that details this is to the right.

We have decided to call the company Black Fan Productions and will begin drawing up the contract next month with our lawyer Clifton.

Air 01: Breathing


Meaning

The first card in each suit represents the initiation of the cycle of the energy flow. Breathing is

about the opening of the mind, new thoughts and ideas, and the need to think anew. The Ace

of Air is thinking on a new path or the “aha!” moment. The air is the unseen element; we only

observe it through outcomes, trees moving back and forth in a breeze or a strong wind, a

photo of the breath on glass.

Message When you draw this card in a reading, you are telling yourself that you need to approach a

situation with a new way of thinking about it. You need to come up with a new idea or new

understanding. You can trigger this energy by talking to someone about your situation that you

would not normally talk to, a stranger or a professional advisor/counselor. Perhaps you pull

more cards on the issue. Use your imagination, how would someone “not you” address the

situation or problem? You need to “see from a different perspective.”

interpret the card for yourself and your client in the following way: “You need to actively

attempt to see the problem/situation differently. Engage someone who does not know you or

the situation, a stranger at the grocery store or an advising professional (life coach,

psychologist, or astrologer) and tell them about the situation and see if they can help direct

your thinking down a new and different path. Write about the situation, get it out of your head

and then put it back in again (by reading what you wrote).

Meaning

The second card in each suit represents direction in the cycle of energy flow. Flirting is about

directing the feelings we have towards someone else. The emotional energy generated from

the Ace of Water gets outward expression with this card. At its best expressing, and as shown

in the photograph, the energy is mutually shared, creating a positive feedback loop that is

exciting and joyful.

Message When you draw this card in a reading you are telling yourself that you need to express your

feelings for someone in your life and see how the energy is received. It may or may not be

returned; outcomes are not the intent this energy. The message is about letting your own

emotions extend beyond your inner world. Flirting energy is light and fun, meant to be used to

test the “waters” without a heavy investment of energy.
