Auburn University is conducting, an intensive academic program for undergraduate and graduate students as well as teachers of Italian in Taormina, Sicily, Italy, from May 27 to June 23.

since the program offers language courses at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced level.

Participants may earn up to 8 semester hours. Participants will be given Italian language assessment upon arrival and will be placed in appropriate level classes. An Italian civilization course, conducted in English, will be taught by AU faculty, while language courses, special courses in Ital-ian Literature, Art History, Geology, Culture, History, Fash-ion, Archeology, and Cinema, and Language Plus courses – cooking, ceramics, diving, eco-touring, golf, business and commercial correspondence among these – will be taught by the dynamic and specialized faculty of the Ital-ian institution. The special courses and Language Plus courses are available upon request for a supplemental fee, if students meet minimal entrance requirements.

Classes will take place M-F with W afternoons and weekends free for cultural activities and excursions. In addition to classroom instruction, students, in fact, will attend lectures by experts in the field, view films, visit ceramic shops, museums, and the cities of Palermo, Agrigento, Catania, and Mount Etna. Optional activities not included in the cost of the program are: group dinners, live theatre and music, and museum entrance fees.

Participants will be housed in double rooms in a (boarding house) with American breakfast

included, and pool. For those who wish for a more complete immersion, arrangements can be made for a family stay for an additional cost, with half or full board. Contact the Director for arrangements. Due to the limited availability, it is recommended to make reservations well in advance to secure optimal results.

Application for a United States passport must be made well in advance. If you do not have a PASSPORT: Please check http://travel.state.gov for the nearest lo-cal passport office and forms. Application for a United States passport should be made at least 120 days in advance of your departure date.

J. W. Goethe wrote about Sicily, in his book Italianische Reise, “Without Sicily, Italy cannot be fully understood. It is here one finds the key to all things.” In arts, law, and sciences, Sicilian contribution has been enormous: Caronda, Pirandello, Quasimodo (2 Nobel Prizes), Verga, Bellini, Antonello da Messina, Renato Guttuso, Sciascia, Vittorini, Tornatore, Dolce & Gabbana are unforgettable, without mentioning writers who have written of it (among these are Vivant Denon, Maupassant, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolf, and D. H. Lawrence). Taormina, on top of the Mount Tauro hill, overlooking the coastline of the Ionian Sea, is a treasure chest of history: walking along its streets, one finds a Theatre and Gymnasium of the Greek Empire, Odeon and Baths of the Roman Empire, and architectural traces of the Byzantine, Arab, and Norman dominations. It offers many opportunities of entertainment, among these the International Festival of Taormina Arte (films, operas, plays, ballets, and concerts) from May to July. The school is housed in a four-story XIX building which faces the community tennis courts, the lush public gardens, the magnificent bay of Naxos and the impressive Mount Etna. The teaching methodology emphasizes the communicative approach in classrooms of no more than 10 students to ensure that students are able to employ the Italian language in the Italian context. The school, Il Centro di Lingua e Cultura Italiana Babilonia, is accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education, I.A.L.C. (International Association of Language Centres) A.S.I.L.S.(Association of Language Schools of Ital-ian as a Foreign Language) and E.L.I.T.E. (Excellent Language Institutions Teaching in Europe), the University for Foreigners of Perugia, and the University Ca’ Foscari of Venice for teachers of Italian. It is quite easy to travel to any part of the country as well as to visit other parts of Europe. Students can travel at their own expense during the period after the end of the program.

Space is limited and students must file formal applications as soon as they know for sure they are participating. Complete the Auburn Abroad Application online and wait for confirmation from the Program Director. Non-Auburn University students must also be accepted as transient students by AU ($25) and attach a transcript to qualify for the Summer Abroad program. All AU and non-AU students must submit the completed Auburn Abroad Application. (See http://www.auburn.edu/forlang “Study Abroad” for link to application.)

After acceptance into the program, students must print the Course Approval Form, consult with the Program Director about course work, and obtain departmental signatures. Upon admission to the program, all participants will be responsible for full payment of all fees and costs by the deadlines indicated.
