Target Audience & Demographic Profile

The main target audience will be for people around the area where the paper is located. This can change depending on subject matter and the content of the newspaper. Tabloids for example are targeted and working class more on the lower socioeconomic groups that are less well educated fitting a demographic group C, D or E so generally they are semi skilled, tradesmen etc. Contrastingly Broadsheets are aimed at high well educated socioeconomic groups with a strong interest in world affairs and politics. They are likely to be in a higher professional career and be an older demographic. In terms of the VAL'S system they would be 'fulfilled' meaning they are well educated profession's; with an understanding of responsibilities and the world. Both papers however are not limited to these particular groups as many who fit the target audience for broadsheet newspaper would chose to read tabloids for lighter entertainment. Local newspapers are targeted at the local area they circulate in. The stories within are directly related to the smaller area they are produced for and so wouldn't appeal to someone whose not familiar with that specific area. They are not strictly entertainment based although they feature a lot of tabloid style articles. Depending on the area will alter the demographic and psychographic groups, usually people who read and care about there own community will be classed under the VAL system as 'carers'.

Who is the target audience for my paper?

My paper is a fashion based local paper situated in the area of Bromley. The target age group will range from 14-25 as these are the one who would be most interested in local fashion news and up to date with current trends and cultures. My paper will appeal to both boys and girls but focusing mainly on young girls. It will focus on the psychographic group of 'experiencers' but also in terms of young persons it will focus on 'trendies' following current trends as well as 'innovators' looking to make their mark and appreciate different styles of fashion along with 'rebels' who appreciate the anti establishment approach taken by many fashion designer's. It will target the higher socio economic groups found in the area as does the News Shopper fitting with the social groupings A, B, C1 and C2 with available income to purchase clothes and big labels.

Who are the target audience for the papers you looked at?

The News Shopper is very similar to mine as the people it targets is the local community of Bromley. It caters for a higher socioeconomic group to fit that which is the dominant demographic of that area. In terms of socio group it can be categorised with types A, B. C1 and C2 as these are dominant groups in the area ranging from highly skilled professionals to skilled tradesmen all fairly well. The Sevenoaks Chronicle will target a very similar audience also as it is a suburb of London. The stories featured in this relate to the people living in that area so in terms of the VALs system these people will be 'carers' or fufilleds' as they are living in a wealthy area. The target audience for the Metro Newspaper is working professionals in an urban environment. In terms of psychographic it would fit into the VALs classing of 'Actualisers' as they would be young successful professionals and image is very important to them so the life of celebrities and the latest gossip would appeal to them.'Experienceers' could also be linked in as they are young and adventerous appreciating new products and styles spending alot on the latest trends.

How will you measure your success in having

made a product which appeals to this audience?

I will use target audience feedback to measure the success of my product in appealing to its desired market. This will mean i will be getting involved in different focus groups and getting them of offer me feedback on the pros and cons of my newspaper. This will then help me to improve the overall design and make any changes that i feel are necessary. I will also upload my product online to gain viewers as this is the easiest place to access the target audience that i am appealing to and in this modern age of multimedia available it will allow me to reach a much broader range of people.
