Target Audience for Period Drama’s

The main audience for a period drama is typically women aged 17-50. The period drama

genre can span a wide age range due to the content. It has a wider target audience than

some genres such as teen movie, as it can relate to a wider audience, due to the range of

characters and varying plotlines.

Many Period Drama’s have a romantic storyline, which could also appeal to women more than men. The protagonists in the films are usually

strong, opinionated female characters, or if not feature a prominent female character. This

means that a female audience will be able to relate to the characters.

The plot lines in Period Drama’s tend to be more complex and involve characters emotions and feelings, such as in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and

deals with the relationships between the characters. This would appeal to a female

audience as in some ways Period Drama’s are also similar to romantic drama’s, which is

another genre that has a large female audience.

However some Period Drama’s are not targeted at a female audience, such as ‘Dorian Gray’

which involves more violence and has an overall darker feel than most other Period Drama’s. This

could have been done to attract a wider audience.

Conclusion

Overall, the target audience that we will be aiming to reach for our production is women aged 17 – 50. This is because our story line involves a complicated, romantic plot line,

typical of the conventions of Period Drama’s, which should appeal to this audience and

interest them.
