KUMBAKONAM UNIT

This unit of Kumbakonam, met on 7th January, 2017, the first Saturdayof this month, in the premises of Gopal Rao library, Town Hall Road,Kumbakomam, by 5.30, in the evening. The President Prof. C. Rajasekarancommenced the meeting, greeting the members. We elaborated the eventsof General Council Meet of the Centre unit . All the communicationsobtained from the General Secretary Prof. E.P.Perumal, were read out.The President of the unit brought out a consolidated report of the importantevents occurred in 2016. It has been decided to have the annual feast in the month of March,on 11 – 03 – 2017. We request all the members of this unit to participatein the annual feast. The following members celebrate their birthday thismonth. Dr. P.V. Kaliaperumal, Prof. K.S. Narayanaswamy, ProfC.Rajasekaran, Dr.P.S. Parasuraman and Prof. K.M. Ramachandran. Wewish them a happy Birth-day. This unit thank the Chief Minister ofTamilnadu for having announced the DA hike.We remind our unit membersto remit the subscription for the year 2016-2017. Kindly ignore this if ithad already been paid.

The northeast monsoon has withdrawn from Tamilnadu leaving thestate with a 41% deficit of its annual rainfall. Deaths and suicides offarmers are shocking. We feel the Government should expedite the processof sanction of compensation under crop insurance scheme to bring somesolace to farmers. It is being called a “mass molestation.” With all thecreepiness and collective menace that the phrase conveys, the sketchyfacts of the events of New Year’s –eve in downtown Bangaluru onceagain hold a mirror up to Indian Society. Wishing the members a happypongal and a colourful Republic Day, Prof P.Marimuthu, Joint Secretary,delivered vote of thanks.

PALANI UNITThe TANRECTA - Palani Unit arranged for a Mupperum Vizha on

10th January, 2017 at the Nalapakam Hotel Meeting Hall. It was a confluence

of three functions namely the new-year celebrations, the Pongal Festivaland the get-together function of the family members. Thus, the January-monthly meeting started at 11.30 AM “with a hey, and a ho and hay

nonino” (‘As you like it’). It delineated the activities of the Palani Unit

in the year, 2016.

Most of the members attended the function with their beloved-ones.Dr.S.P.Manickam presided over the function. Prof.Gomathly K.Sivan sang

a prayer song on Lord Muruga. Prof.Durai. Sundaramoorthy, the secretary,

gave a welcome address. Dr.S.Rathnasabapathy, the vice- President, greeted

the eight members of the unit who were born in January. The list is as

follows: Prof.K.G.Sivaramakrishnan (Physics) Dr.S.Palanichamy (Zoology),

Prof.C.Natanabalapathy (Economics), Prof.P .Karunanidhi (Commerce),

Prof. V. Muthupandi (Commerce), Prof.R.Jayamani (Maths),

Dr.R.Murukesan (Indian Culture), and Dr.P.Chandra (English).

Distribution of Income tax deduction particulars:- The President took

pains to collect the income-tax deduction particulars from the Sub-Treasury.

Copies of the particulars of the deductions and the Auditor’s report of the

10th TANRECTA Conference were distributed to the members.

Identity Cards to the members:- The Unit had issued I.D. Cards to the

members. To issue fresh I.D. cards to the new members and those who

are in need of them, a photographer was brought to the meeting hall.

Laminated I.D cards will be issued to the needy soon.

Felicitating the octogenarians:- Prof.N.Sivaramakrishnan (Maths) and

Prof.C.Natanasatapathy (Economics) have completed 80 years of age.

The unit greeted them to live long and honoured them with shawls.

Honoring the organizer ofthe Palani Unit:- The Unit honoured

Prof.P.S.Chandraskaran (Ex-Prinicipal), the organizer of the Palani Unit in

the bygone years. Prof.Saratchandran felicitated him with a shawl.

Felicitating the central Office- Bearers:- The Unit congradulated

Dr.N.Marisamy and Prof.Soma. Sivashanmugam for having been elected

as Vice -President and Joint-Secretary respectively for the Central Unitand felicitated them with shawls.

Felicitating the new Office-Beareres of the Unit:- The Palani Unit also

felicitated the new office-bearers of the Unit with Ponnadais.

Offering shawls to the Hotel-Partner and the Hotel-Workers:- As atoken of affection we honored Thiru.N. Magesh, one of the partners ofthe Nalapakam Hotel, with a shawl. Further” he was an almamater of our

college. We appreciated the services of the hotel workers during our

meetings and we offered them shawls.

Election of Three Excutive Committee Members:- The Unit elected

three Excutive Committee members unanimously. Prof.S.Nagalingam,Dr.R.Mathivanan and Prof.Kalyanasundari are the E.C.members.

Tours and Excursions:- For conducting tours and excursions in the coming

years, the Palani Unit has nominated Dr.S.Ratnasabapathy andProf.S.Nagalingam as organizers.

PARTICIPATION OF THE MEMBERS: ACTIONS AND REACTIONS:-

1. The President requested the members to take part in all the activities of

the Unit. He requested them to distribute the food and water packets to

the pilgrims attending the Thaipoosam on 9.2.2017. The Unit arranges

the distribution of the food items with a good share from the President.

2. Our former Secretary(2010-13) Prof.P.Karunanidhi extolled at length

the activities of the Unit and the Centre.

3. Prof.T.Palanichamy(Botany)suggested to issue to the members a daily-

sheet calendar and a monthly sheet calendar instead of giving two-montly

calendars.

4. Many members felt that the Pongal festival without a Jallikkattu has

lost the flavour of the festival. They opined that the festival would have

an added attraction if there is Jallikkattu, the Pride of the Tamils.

5. Prof.G.Sreenivasan showered his affection on Prof. N. Sivaramakrishnan

who was a sincere and able administrator in his tenure as a Principal(in-

charge)

6. The Unit takes steps to install a washing machine from the amount

sanctioned by Prof.Narasingam Trust for the use of the aged people

and the young students residing at the Dhurga Home, Virupachi.

TRIBUTES TO THE MEMORY OF PROF.(Late)A.MANGAIPAGAN

Prof.M.Dhandapani(Chemistry) reminisced his association with

Prof.A.Magnaipagan who had been an active participant in all the agitationslaunched by the MUTA.

Reply to the Toast:- Our Chief-guests Dr.N.Marisamy and Prof.Soma-

Sivashanmugam, thanked the Unit and promised that they would establishgood rapport between the Units and the Centre.

Treasurer’s Report:- Dr.S.Planichamy explained the financial position ofthe Palani Unit which has always been fertile with the contribution of the

members.

Vote of Thanks:- Prof.Maragatham Sivanadam thanked the members and

their families for having attended the function and the annual feast.

Our February Monthly Meeting:- We will meet on 14th February,

2017 at 5 p.m at the Nalapakam Hotel.

CHENNAIThe meeting was held on 21.01.2017 (Third Saturday). 55

members attended the meeting. The President, Dr.V.Swaminathan spokeabout the Jallikattu issue and also about the meeting the President andSecretary of our unit had with the DCE and the Principal of the QuaideMillat College.

The Secretary in his report shared with concern that the CentralGovernment had closed the issue of “Option I fixation of Pension” whichwas recommended by the 7th pay commission. He informed the housethat this is a huge loss to all pensioners, resulting in everybody gettingthe same minimum pension, irrespective the increments earned in payband 4.

Resolutions were passed on the Jallikattu issue. It was decidedto hold all future meetings at 4 p.m. on every second Saturday of themonth instead of 4.30 p.m.

The Chennai Unit is sad to report the demise of three of itsmembers, Mrs. Jayvardhini (SIET College), Mrs.Maragatham (QuaideMillat College) and N.Sundaram (Presidency College).

The Secretary informed the members about the data base to becreated with the details of members by the TANRECTA for futurereferences. A printed form will be given to the members to collect thedetails.
