Three years ago, I began talking with friends and co-workers about exactly when the real world lost out to the virtual world.

It seemed like in the span of just a few short years, the only environment that people cared about belonging to, writing about, or paying attention to was the virtual world. Not the real one.

And that didn’t make sense to me. Computer experiences are delivered through a small platform screen, so they’re not immersive; they’re not felt all around. The mouse, keyboard and monitor all act like physical barriers to prevent people from fully engaging in what they’re seeing. Computers can entertain the eyes and the brain, but they can’t reach senses that are essential to making an impact or triggering emotions.

Understandably so. Computers aren’t how we have traditionally absorbed information and because of that, one-dimensional experiences just don’t have the same magic or staying power as an experience you can actually feel.

After two decades in graphic, web design and advertising, there is one thing I know for sure: the online medium can certainly be dazzling, but it can’t tap into the soul.

My goal is to leverage what I’ve learned from designing for the virtual universe, and use it in all three dimensions – to snap people out of their everyday haze and make them feel something, from deep curiosity to utter amazement.

SURPRISE

CONNECT

INSPIRE

Creating moments of excitement or pleasure where and when people least expect it is a key ingredient in Tangible’s creative and developmental process.

Tangible works to create talk value through building experiences people will blog about, talk about and pass on to others.

By connecting with people in the real world, Tangible transforms seemingly traditional spaces to deliver an experience that will get people involved with every installation.

EXPERIENTIAL PRODUCTS

Working directly with clients, Tangible can see a project from idea generation through to final delivery. The skills of the in-house team include strategy, interaction design, programming, music, writing, lighting and architecture. We also work with a network of specialists in different fields, from electronic engineers to artists and performers based on the needs of each project.

Our work resonates by tapping into people’s basic interest in entertainment, play and exploration. To that end, Tangible offers three distinct services:

Tangible is available as an interaction design (or “environmental design”) support service. Some companies we’ve worked with in the past include architectural firms, advertising agencies, marketing, event, and PR firms.

Tangible designs and markets its own interactive products. Some are sold separately and some – like Zygote, our inflatable illuminated orbs – are included as part of our service.

Emitting light via internal LED lights, this lightweight helium filled orb responds to human touch – changing colour as it is pushed.

This unique ball transforms otherwise ordinary events into multidimensional, interactive playgrounds that actively engage audience members in a holistic shared experience.

Graffiti has finally gone digital with Graffiti Wall. Now, artists can digitally “paint” a surface in the same way they can tag a wall with traditional spray paint. This multi-user application is perfectly poised to engage large groups of people and immerse them in a cool common activity.

Having users place their index fingers on a sensor gave us the opportunity to put the human heart on display. Through the use of wireless connectivity an orb will light up in real-time to the rhythm of a user’s actual heartbeat.

Installed within multiple malls across Canada, this recent project for Sunrype fruit juice had us using a camera and a computer to create a video wall that showed (in real-time) what consumers would look like if they were made entirely of fruit. This execution was used to further the reach of similar looking TV ads for the launch of new Sunrype packaging.

We use telophase to create custom user controlled lightscapes. These unique inflatable structures get people talking and create cool light filled spaces that engage the senses.
