Mind, Body & SoulThe Spiritual Side of Today’s Superstars By Alyssa Thomann
> Life is a chaotic string of events pull-ing us in different directions and leaving our bodies full of stress. It is impossible to deny the stresses we encounter from day to day. We all are victims. Some people let it build up and get the best of them ending in a big explosion of anger or worse, while others ease their way out of it and start everyday as a new beginning. I commend those who have their methods to keep their mind and body calm. Especially those who are the fo-cus of the public eye like today’s Hollywood superstars. If I had to wake up every morn-ing dodging paparazzi cameras and swarm-ing crowds of people, I would need a stress outlet as well. Let’s see how these celebri-ties keep their mind, body and soul at ease while living such hectic lives.
Adam Levin, Maroon 5’s frontman and judge on The Voice, was once a skeptic about the yoga scene. He admits to once believing it was a cheesy celebrity cliché. However, his workouts at the gym were becoming more harmful than helpful. His body was constantly in pain and his physique was be-coming too bulky turning him into what he claimed to be “a monster!” He decided, that for his body and peace of mind, he would give yoga a shot. 5 years later he’s still doing it. Levine believes that yoga molds the body to give it a much more natural look and feel. The physical payoff is a definite factor as to why he has become such a yogi, but he also claims that his routines are so therapeutic they help him to balance out his busy career. At every concert backstage there is a room
labeled “yoga” and before every concert where he must perform in front of thou-sands of people, an hour worth of yoga leaves him physically relaxed and ready for anything.
Actress and director, Drew Barrymore, is one to fully encompass and embrace her spirituality on a daily basis. No more than two years ago, she endeavored on a solo-trip to Delhi, India where she stayed for two weeks to take a break from her busy life and career. She was in need of a “shift of consciousness”. During her time abroad she was studying spirituality and religion. Barrymore took trips to different temples, explored and walked barefoot through the streets. She had amazing conversation and realized what a different experience it is to

journey alone. While there, she vowed that for the sake of her mind and soul she must take breaks from her busy life and venture out into the massive world. Delhi was just a single trip and she plans on many more endeavors.Through travel and meditation, Barrymore is able to keep hold of the reigns of her life- this is her stress relief. She says that praying, thinking about friends and never losing sight of all that you have are the most important ways to keep a happy mind and soul.
Madonna, 50 years old and still beautiful in both her body and mind has never let her extensive fame and fortune take from her what means the most - her spirituality and soul. After giving birth, to her daughter, Lourdes, Madonna began to pick up yoga to get her body back into shape. It has been
over a decade and she is still practicing the soothing and wellness exercise. She believes yoga is a metaphor for life. That you must take both life and yoga slowly; never rush. You cannot skip to the next position as you cannot skip ahead in life either. She explains that during your yoga routine, you may find yourself in some humiliating positions but you cannot judge yourself. Just breathe and let go.
Tapping into his spirituality and focusing on the betterment of his body and mind may have been what saved Robert Downey Jr. from his addiction to drugs. He has had nu-merous feats of success in his life and ca-reer that have unfortunately been followed by downhill spirals and run-ins with the law due to his addiction. However, life is looking up for Robert Downey Jr. He explains that
when you make time for yourself to heal and recover from something as serious as addiction, something like magic happens. His Yogic lifestyle is his rehabilitation. Downey is one of the latest celebrities to join and find serenity within the scope of this life-style and seems to be another success sto-ry. Through an active pursuit to better his life and by finding the right niche, Downey may have finally conquered his addiction. <

Lower Your Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease

STYLE MD :: 19
> Approximately 5.4 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Every 68 seconds someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease. With the ag-ing of baby boomers, an additional 10 million Amer-icans are expected to develop the disease in the upcoming decades. As a result the rate is projected to more than double by 2015, to one in every 33 seconds. It is normally thought of as a disease that primarily affects older individuals. However, an esti-mated 200,000 people under the age of 65 are also affected. Despite aggressive research the percent-age of deaths due to Alzheimer’s disease continues to increase while deaths from heart disease and stroke have fallen. It is the sixth leading cause of death in American and the fifth among those over age 64.
Alzheimer’s disease is felt to be a complex disease with multiple interrelated causes, from genetics to lifestyle choices. The end result is a loss of brain cells and their billions of connections that leads to death of the cells in the areas of the brain that are responsible for memory thinking, and personal-ity. Currently we know a great deal about the dis-ease’s risk factors and the changes we can see in the brains and how these changes affect brain func-tion. Unfortunately, there still is no cure. Current medical treatments focus on treating the symptoms. Modern drug therapy is directed at boosting the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain cells. Unfortunately we currently do not have medica-tions that can slow or stop the progression of the disease or reverse it.
Numerous abnormalities exist in the brains of peo-ple with Alzheimer’s disease.
• Senile Plaques - abnormal collections of protein outside the brain cells felt to be a possible cause of the death of brain cells.
• Neurofibrillary tangles - intracellular structures that trigger cell destruction and malfunction.
• Imbalance of neurotransmitter levels - such as acetylcholine that prevents proper signaling be-tween brain cells.
• Increased inflammation - researchers believe that increased inflammation from oxidative stress is a major cause of cell death.
• Elevated Homocysteine levels - an amino acid that when elevated can increase deposits of amyloid and neurofibrillary tangles.
• Defective mitochondria - the organelles inside the brain cells responsible for energy production.
There is a large amount of data showing that mak-ing healthy dietary and lifestyle choices along with the optimal use of nutrients, hormones, and supple-ments may dramatically reduce the risk of develop-
ing the disease. New research shows that lowering elevated blood sugars may substantially reduce your chances of developing Altzheimer’s. We know your best offense is a strong defense against developing the disease in the first place.
The science of nutritional strategies for preventing and slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease continues to grow. New blood tests are now avail-able that allow us to measure specific nutrient lev-els in our blood and make sure we have the optimal levels to prevent disease development, and promote optimal health. Here is a list of some common sup-plements being investigated that have great promise by targeting multiple mechanisms in Alzheimer’s de-velopment.
• Acetyl –L-Carnitine – mitochondrial health
• Ginseng – used in Chinese medicine and may re-duce amyloid formation
• N-Acetlylcysteine (NAC) - amino acid precursor of the antioxidant glutathione
• Lipoic Acid - mitochondrial energy production
• Omega-3 fish oils - reduce inflammation and im-prove brain cell membranes
• Vitamin D - multiple beneficial effects for brain health.
• Magnesium - mineral essential for many enzymatic reactions.
• B Vitamins - B12, folate and B6 are essential to lower homocysteine levels.
• CoQ10 and PQQ - increase cellular energy
• Curcumin - lowers oxidative stress and may pre-vent amyloid molecules from assembling.
• Resveratrol - antioxidant that may have effects on positive gene expression.
• Phosphatidylserine - may reduce the risk of de-mentia and cognitive dysfunction in the elderly.
• Coffee, blueberry, green tea and grape seed ex-tracts – they possess potent antioxidant properties.
The research as to the cause, prevention, and re-versal of Alzheimer’s disease continues. Currently the best strategy is to focus on a plan of preven-tion. Proper diet, exercise, and nutritional supple-mentation with focused blood work are currently our best defense against a disease that has multiple mechanisms and requires a broad defense to target disease prevention. <

> When viewing the opposite sex, men
think long hair is sexy; women think full hair
is youthful. It is no wonder that Americans
spend a small fortune on hair care and
grooming products. We condition it, color
it, trim it, curl it, flatiron it and do everything
in their power so it looks thick, healthy and
shiny. When your hair looks and feels good,
life is grand. If your hair is unhealthy or thin-
ning, life may become a series of bad hair
days.
To keep your locks looking their best, avoid
heat damage from your blow dryer or flat-
iron. “The use of hot tools on a daily basis
is what causes people to have ugly long hair
and not healthy, shiny, gorgeous long hair,”
shared hair pro Oribe, who does hair for
Jennifer Lopez. If you must use heat styling
aids, use a heat-protecting product prior to
drying or styling your hair.
To give the appearance of thicker hair, have
long layers cut and get regular trims to re-
move split ends. Brush your hair daily with a
natural bristle brush to help distribute natu-
ral oils and encourage growth. Nourishing
your body from the inside out can help im-

it looking its healthiest. Foods that nourish

hair are salmon, dark green vegetables, beans, eggs,
and low- fat dairy products.
Hair loss can be blamed on a variety of culprits like
heredity, hormones, male pattern baldness or health
issues such as cancer. Other factors can also con-
tribute to thinning or hair loss such as poor nutri-
tion, prescription drugs, iron deficiency or stress.
What if your hair is thin or you have bald patches?
You cannot style what is not there, and at times, no
amount of teasing or spraying can help. Hair exten-
sions may be the answer. Hair stylist Karen McGraw
of Salon 400 showed us that, in as little as a few
hours, you can have a full head of gorgeous flow-
ing hair. In her comfortable, well-stocked and orga-
nized salon she can cut, style, color, straighten and
curl your mane. Karen specializes in natural look-
ing extensions. She matches your own hair color
and is able to use extensions of different shades to
add highlights resulting in multifaceted color. “Karen
makes my long hair look so natural that people think
it’s my own. No one knows I have extensions. I can
curl it and straighten it just as if I was born with it.
I just love working with Karen, she makes my hair
look perfect. Long hair gives me more confidence
and I feel feminine and beautiful. When I book mod-
eling jobs, my hair plays a major part,” shared Brit-
tany Shumaker one of Karen’s clients.
Another option is non-surgical hair placement. Kar-
en custom orders the correct shade, then cuts and
styles the hair once it is applied directly to the scalp,
resulting in a natural look. So natural, I could not
tell the difference between the new and existing hair.
Jeff Petracco had this to share about his experience:
“I joke with Karen, and tell her she is a miracle work-
er. I am a 54-year-old outgoing man who has been
balding for 30 years. I feel and look younger, and I
have Karen to thank for that. People I see all the
time do not even realize I have had something done,
they just notice I look better. Women who touch my
new hair compliment me on how soft and great it
feels. Karen has completely changed my appearance
and the way I feel about the way I look. I am so glad
I started going to Karen, I would recommend her to
everyone!”
Your hair frames your face. Take good care of it,
and people will notice a shiny healthy full head of
hair. Find a hairstyle that is easy to maintain so that
your mornings are not spent trying to style it in a
way that only your hairdresser can. A good stylist
will show you how to get that salon fresh look at
home with minimal effort. If a little help is needed
to add volume or length, the solution is as simple as
making an appointment with your stylist!<

22 :: OUT & ABOUT
> The Tampa Bay History Center is a 60,000-square-foot museum located in the heart of the Channel District, allowing resi-dents to learn about 12,000 years of Florida history through interactive exhibits. They have new exhibitions regularly and provide a fun-learning environment.
If you are looking for a change of pace in your leisure time or simply seeking to have an enriching experience this is the place you want to visit with friends and family alike. The latest exhibit that is up for display is a compilation of photographs of artist Carl-ton Ward Jr., which showcase the beauty of Florida’s wild life interior. Appropriately titled “Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition: The Photographs of Carlton Ward Jr.” To-gether with documentarian Elam Stolzfus, conservationist Mallory Lykes Dimmitt, and bear biologist Joe Guthrie, Ward embarked on a 1,000-mile journey through the state of Florida that lasted 100 days.
The journey began at the southern tip of the Everglades in Flamingo, Florida as the team hiked through some astounding wil-derness areas filled with swamps, parks and agricultural lands. The team’s expedi-tion ended just above the Florida border in Fargo, Georgia. The best of Carlton’s photo-graphs of Florida’s true beauty in the form of landscapes and animals from this amazing excursion are up for visitors to enjoy at the History Center through May 5th. Ward ex-plains his mission was to bring more aware-ness to our State’s ecosystem and how we
play a role in it every day. “We rely on our natural resources like the Everglades water-shed and St. John’s River watershed which millions of us get our drinking water from, also we don’t realize that in the Everglades we have panthers and many other types of wildlife that roam the land just as they did so long ago.” said Ward.
Throughout the journey, Carlton captured some of the most incredible photographs of our state’s ecosystem and all that makes it what it is and everything we rely on. The wildlife section of the exhibit featuring all the different types of animals we shelter in this state is nothing short of remarkable. You will learn about animals you might have never known inhabited the Sunshine State and take a trip down some of the most in-credible sights of Florida landscape you have ever seen. To go along with this exhibition is a documentary of the team’s entire 100-day journey, which is currently set to air and make its local and national debut to audi-ences later this year.<

> March got off to a fantastic start with a
slew of sold out events that brought out the
best of the best in the music, comedy, and
theater business. It was a month to remem-
ber with major musical acts making stops
in various venues and comedy tours that
will leave audiences laughing even after the
show. The crowds all came out for theater
performances as well and I think as a city we
could all agree this is was a great month to
get out and enjoy our favorite acts.
Kicking things off was a musically perfect
performance at the Hard Rock Hotel and
Casino by Grammy winning band Matchbox
20 on March 13th. The longevity of the band
spans over a decade with many hits that
have attracted fans for all these years. They
are hands down the most popular rock
band of the late 90s and still hold a strong
fan base which all came out to see. The tour
is a result of their fourth studio album titled
“North,” which is their first official album
release since 2002. Concertgoers delighted
in cocktails and an exciting performance
that lasted a couple hours and left us all
wanting more, encore encore! We’re keep-
ing our fingers crossed that they’ll make yet
another stop to our city sometime in the
near future.
Shifting gears from legendary rocks bands
to unforgettable comedy shows, this month
was all about laughs as numerous comedi-
ans brought their tour to Tampa. The best
names in the business like Bill Cosby, Jerry
Seinfeld and the Royal Comedy Tour were
all part of this month’s comedy act, and I
mean how lucky are we? Jerry Seinfeld and
Bill Cosby all in one month! For comedy
lover’s, including me, it doesn’t get better
than that. Comedian and popular television
show character Jerry Seinfeld was at the
Carol Morsani Hall on March 30th and had
the crowd including myself laughing hysteri-
cally!
Moving forward with theater, the story
that has stolen hearts all over the world
for years with the play and now the newly
released movie, Les Misérables was also
in attendance in Tampa this month with a
heart wrenching Broadway performance
of the classic tale. Shows were held at the
Van Wezel Hall March 5th, 7th, and 10th
with sold out shows every night. This was
the 25th anniversary show, which displayed
new scenery and staging for lovers of this
legendary musical. Fans of the musical were
raving after the show’s performance and I
could do nothing but agree – it was every-
thing you would want to see in a musical,
love, tragedy, heroism, the works. The show
was so spectacular to witness and I abso-
lutely would recommend to anyone who
enjoys the arts. <

> The law defines all sorts of things. It defines mental capacity, intent, contracts, trusts, and even nuisances. Most do not know it, but the law also defines who is healthy and who is not. More precisely, the law defines which categories of non-citizens are unhealthy and thus inadmissible to the United States. Section 212(a)(1)(A)(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act states “… any alien who is determined to have a communicable disease of public health sig-nificance” is ineligible to receive a visa and ineligible to be admitted in to the United States.
What is the legal definition of a disease of public significance? Here is a short list of some of the diseases of public significance: chancroid, gonorrhea, granuloma inguinal, leprosy (infectious), syphilis, and tubercu-losis. The Secretary of Health and Human Services (HSS) determines this list. The list of diseases that are of public significance is not limited to the designations made by the HSS. In addition to the designations of HSS, other quarantinable diseases can be added to the list through Presidential Executive Order, and those diseases that are con-sidered public health emergencies by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Although the above list may have made you cringe, the reality of the situation is many of the diseases are quite common and/or treatable. Whether people admit it or not, it is highly likely that some friends or family members may have or have had the above diseases. How would we cope with being separated from our family member, wheth-er a spouse, child, or parent, because they had gonorrhea? Although the hypothetical seems grotesque and playful, the truth of the matter is it is reality for some individu-als. Luckily, waivers are offered for certain family members and certain diseases. Filing a waiver can be quite complicated. It requires additional fees and documentation. Al-though it may delay the family reunification,
complicate cases, and increases costs for the individual, the families could eventually be reunited if the applicant is able to meet the difficult requirements of the waiver.
Needless to say, activists and rights groups have historically challenged this issue. Just recently in 2008, Congress repealed the HIV/AIDS admission bar. Technically, prior to 2008, you were unable to become a legal resident of the United States if you were HIV positive or infected with AIDS. Now if this is really thought about, this was not only an issue for those seeking to enter the United States from abroad, but it was also a hurdle for those individuals already in the United States. For example, if someone en-tered the United States legally as a student, contracted HIV while in the United States, and eventually married a USC, that individ-ual was technically unable to become a legal permanent resident through their marriage. In order to qualify for waiver one would have to demonstrate three things. First, a qualifying family member is needed such as a spouse, child, or parent. Second, the appli-cant must establish danger to public health and the possibility of spread of infection posed by the applicant’s condition is mini-mal. Thirdly, the applicant must demonstrate how they will financially support their medi-cal treatment in the US at no cost to the US government. Given this high standard for a waiver, it is no wonder many of these applications were denied and families were kept apart. Perhaps Congress’ original in-tent was to protect citizens of our country, but in practice the law was discriminatory and harmful and so it was repealed.
So, are you healthy enough, legally, to be-come a legal resident of the United States? The answer is probably “yes,” but this is to-day, after substantial changes in the law and applications for waivers of inadmissibility. The answer may not have been the same just a few years ago. <

> “We chose to call this model LaFer-rari,” declared Ferrari’s President, Luca di Montezemolo, “because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence. Excellence in terms of tech-nological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving. Aimed at our collectors, this is a truly extraordi-nary car which encompasses advanced solu-tions that, in the future, will find their way onto the rest of the range, and it represents the benchmark for the entire automotive industry. LaFerrari is the finest expression of our company’s unique, unparalleled en-gineering and design know-how, including that acquired in Formula 1.”
For Ferrari the development of a limited-series special like the LaFerrari represents an opportunity to experiment with all the technological solutions that will later filter down onto the production cars. Of particu-lar significance in this context is the intro-duction of the hybrid system which, making full use of the Scuderia Ferrari’s F1 KERS know-how, has resulted in a solution that exalts Ferrari’s fundamental values – perfor-mance and driving thrills. The hybrid tech-nology used, known as HY-KERS, represents the perfect combination of maximum per-formance and lower emissions. LaFerrari in fact emits just 330 g/km of CO2 but with-out resorting to electric-only drive which would not fit the mission of this model. The HY-KERS system is, however, designed so that in future applications a car can be driven using exclusively electric power for a few kilometres and, during development testing, a full-electric version of LaFerrari achieved just 220 g/km of C02 emissions on the combined cycle.
The LaFerrari is equipped with dynamic controls that are integrated for the first time ever on a Ferrari road car with active aerodynamics and the HY-KERS system. Thanks to Ferrari’s proprietary logic which govern all the systems, the car can achieve absolute levels of performance, aerodynam-ic efficiency and handling without any form of compromise in any area. A very advanced and uncompromising approach was also taken with the interior design which fea-tures an HMI inspired by F1 single-seaters. <

> How does one start an article about Imagine Dragons? Whatever I say, it won’t be sufficient enough to talk about this band that myself and many others have fallen in love with. ID is cur-rently on tour promoting their debut album, Night Visions and we had the pleasure of sitting down with the band as they passed through ‘The City Beautiful’ for a sold-out concert at House of Blues. ID drummer Daniel Platzman told us the Night Visions tour has been an unbelievable dream come true and one brief look outside the venue was all it took to understand why. Packed lines of concertgoers wrapped around HOB. Once inside, fans of all ages eagerly waited for the show to start and no matter where you stood, the people around you were singing along with every single lyric and word. The energy of the crowd was incredible and matched, if not sur-passed, only by that of the band themselves. From
their stage presence to their crowd interaction, ID knows how to put on a show. Watching them perform you’d think they were a longtime estab-lished band, but as guitarist Wayne Sermon tells us, this is not the case at all.
“We’ve only been a band for 4 years and 3 of those years were basically just sleeping on couches and eating bean burritos.” (Sermon)
Incredibly, ID’s rise to international fame has only been within the last year, which seems crazy when you can’t go anywhere without hearing their music. As Sermon found out one day, you’re not even safe in the theatres!
“It was really bizarre hearing my music for the first time in a movie trailer...I’m there and watching the trailers beforehand and our song came on. Then the next trailer comes on and it’s another one of our songs. I swear I just started sinking in my seat...I was like, “Ugh, I hope people like it.” (Sermon)
ID says their goal has always been to make their music as organic as possible and to build their band one fan at a time. Well I think it’s safe to say they’ve achieved that. ID’s fanbase is huge and it continues to grow. One thing I loved about them during our interview was how down to earth they were. These guys are truly all about their music and don’t try to be something they’re not. Their songs are born out of true, genuine mo-ments. Take the chart topping single, “It’s Time” for example.
“‘It’s Time’ started late one night in my kitchen. I was going through a low point in my life and I was stomp-ing my feet and clapping my hands and singing about change as in a new beginning, but going back to who

you are at your core and staying true to your roots. I never wrote it with the intention of it playing on the radio or even being heard by anybody really, but I brought it to the band and that’s when it really came to life and we knew we had something pretty special that we had created together.” (Dan Reynolds)
The ID frontman went on to say that their other single, “Radioactive,” was written in a similar way. He called it a song about personal empowerment and overcoming surmounting odds.
“At the end of the day we’re a rock band that fuses an organic sound with a synthetic electric sound and “Its Time” and “Radioactive” we felt would be two good singles to show the entire spectrum of the band.” (Reynolds)
A big way in which ID combines those worlds is through creative use of instru-ments. Everything from a quad of toms and claves to a mandolin and other stringed instruments. Perhaps my favorite item is the 6-foot-tall, 300-pound Taiko drum that the band just purchased from Asia. It’s an incredible sight to see on stage and an equally incredible experience to see Reynolds going to town on it.
“I grew up listening to a lot of urban radio and hip-hop and so I was very obsessed with percussion. My first instrument was drums so we work a lot of percussion into our music. There are just so many great instruments that are not used here in the states that are used all around the world that have real value to them so we hope to incorporate that more into our show and music.” (Reynolds)
The future looks big and bright for ID and as Sermon told us, writing new music is instinctive to the band so don’t be surprised to hear more instant hits from them in the near future. For now though, their focus remains on Night Vision.
“We looked at our schedule for the next year and it’s pretty much booked with just play-ing shows which we can’t really complain about cause that’s what we love to do. We love to play live music for people. It’s our first love and there’s a lot of people who haven’t heard us play live yet and we want to reach those people.” (Sermon)
If you would like to be one of those people or would just like more info on Imagine Dragons, be sure to check out www.ImagineDragonsMusic.com for the latest on the band, their music, and their tours. <

46 :: BEST FRIENDS
> Ah, the sounds of spring in Flor-
ida: the crack of a baseball bat, the
chirping of robins, and the constant
buzz of mosquitoes. Those little flying
villains are not only after your blood,
your pet’s blood too.
The mosquito is the “Petri Dish of
Disease” within the insect world.
They have the ability to transmit ma-
laria, West Nile virus, encephalitis, and
many other deadly diseases. Unfor-
tunately, they also have the ability to
transmit contagions and microbes
that may also cause havoc in dogs,
cats, horses, and many other family
pets.
The most prevalent and (very ironic)
the most preventable of diseases in
dogs and cats is heartworm disease.
The process begins when a mosquito
bites an infected animal with heart-
worms and their “eggs” - microfilariae.
The microfilariae develop into larvae
inside the mosquito. The mosquito
then bites another pet, thus transmit-
ting the burrowing larvae to the skin
of the pet, beginning the migration to
the heart. Within the heart, the larvae
grow to lengths of 12 inches in the
right side of the heart and the pulmo-
nary arteries. Once reaching maturity,
the worms create more microfilariae,
thus continuing the cycle.
According to the American Veterinary
Association, “Heartworm disease can
cause serious health problems and
may eventually lead to heart failure
and death.” – I know… pretty mor-
bid for our lighthearted article about
Body and Soul.
But there is good news.
Heartworm disease is 100% prevent-
able. Take your pet(s) to their Veteri-
narian, have a simple test completed
(to insure that the pet is not currently
infected), and then obtain a pre-
scription for heartworm prevention.
There are several varieties of heart-
worm prevention, so you should have
a brief discussion with your Veterinar-
ian to find the best treatment to par-
allel you and your pet’s lifestyles. Most
prescriptions are easy to feed to your
pet and are much more affordable
compared to treating for heartworm
disease.
If you don’t have a Veterinarian, you
may contact the SPCA of Central
Florida’s low-cost clinics for spay/
neuter surgeries and for annual well-
ness exams. There are two facilities
(Orlando and Sanford) and one mo-
bile unit (Kissimmee and St. Cloud).

48 :: SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW
STRESS - BY MARK L. HORWITZ
> As a lawyer I have observed the stress caused by being under investigation or charged with a crime. The impact of realizing that you may lose your liberty, as well as face public humiliation, can be se-vere and takes many forms. Loss of sleep, loss of productivity, loss of concentration and even thoughts of suicide are common examples of the impact of stress. In help-ing clients who must deal with the criminal justice system, I routinely discuss the im-pact stress may have on daily life and that it must be recognized, acknowledged, and dealt with. Recognizing that stress is a normal conse-quence of facing criminal charges is a first step. While most people have a certain amount of stress in their lives, few have had to deal with the extreme stress caused by a criminal case. I have observed, both men and women, break down and cry in my of-
fice. They will call complaining of lack of sleep and inability to function. I believe it is important for an attorney to let clients know that what they are experiencing is to be expected, under the circumstances. Help in coping with the stress caused by a criminal case can take many forms. Open communication between attorney and cli-ent can relieve stress by answering ques-tions, explaining procedures, and under-standing the legal case. Reaching out to a spouse or family member may also be helpful. Many also benefit from talking with clergy or counseling with health care pro-fessionals. <

62 :: TRAVEL ‘N STYLE
> Driving from I-95 eastbound at Exit
59A to the end of Indiantown Road and de-
spite being somewhat off the beaten path,
we discovered this quiet spa resort. Our
first impression was that we had stumbled
on a South Beach art deco hotel. Navigating
thru the front entrance is a totally different
experience, however, presenting an atmo-
sphere draped with the warmth of mahog-
any, soft lighting dancing off playful ‘antler’
motif chandeliers, vibrant silk draperies of
orange hues and heavy wooden beams; this
is the perfect invitation to an enchanting
and calming respite and just what we need-
ed on this lovely weekend.
Situated at the northern end of Palm Beach
County in Jupiter, this compact and beauti-
ful but unpretentious resort of 159 guest
rooms possesses all the amenities of other,
larger facilities farther south. With its se-
cluded Atlantic coast pristine beachfront
stretching over 1,000 ft. in length, this nine
story resort and spa features all newly
renovated suites and guest rooms contain-
ing designer mahogany furnishings, marble
bathrooms with private seating balconies to
showcase stunning ocean views. A complete
range of guest room amenities includes ful-
ly-stocked honor bars, plush robes and slip-
pers, in-room safety deposit boxes and VIP
evening turndown service. Resort amenities
include a heated oceanfront swimming pool
and new whirlpool spa, fitness center offer-
ing private instruction, separate Yoga/Pilates
room, lighted tennis courts, game room, a
full service 7,500 square foot spa and four
award-winning restaurants and dining op-
tions.
Drawing from Florida’s abundance of locally
harvested fresh ingredients to inspire a host
of internationally flavored cuisine, Sinclairs
Ocean Grill was precisely what we had in
mind for a romantic dinner. We began our
culinary odyssey with some icy ‘bubbly’
along with an appetizer of Smoked Duck
Spring Rolls. The following course of Seared
Steak Tenderloin Papardella Pasta with wild
mushrooms, black truffles, asparagus tips
and cherry tomatoes in a cognac cream
sauce was perfectly matched with Magnifi-
cent, Franciscan, Napa Valley - California,
one of my favorite reds. Our main course of
Cioppino Stew, a seafarers delight of slowly
simmered yellowtail snapper, grouper, mus-
sels, calamari, shrimp and scallops in an herb
and tomato based sauce was deliciously
paired with a full bodied Puligny- Montra-
chet, from Louis Latour, a French, dry white
of majestic note produced in the heart of
the Burgundy region; this meshed beauti-
fully with the palate.
As a further enhancement to the roman-
tic setting, we were awakened the follow-
ing morning with gentle sounds of rolling
surf and soft, almost ancient musical sounds

coming from a wedding party taking place
in the distance, on the beach. The aroma of
jasmine along with laughter which filled the
sea air, confirmed our thoughts of this be-
ing the perfect way to begin this journey of
togetherness.
After a leisurely stroll on the beach, we pre-
pared to be pampered from head to toe at
the newly refurbished intimate spa and salon;
we began with warm, cozy, plush robes and
visits to the Tea Bar, where herbal teas, fresh
fruits and hot chocolate ‘shots’ preface the
serene experience. Each of six treatment
rooms is equipped with a state-of-the-art
massage table, subtle lighting and individual
sound controls. Specialty body treatments,
such as sugar rubs, take place in a specially
designed wet room; gel nails and rose petal
pedicures are among other specialties at
the full-service nail salon. My choice for
skin enhancement was the “Blushing Rose
Facial” which uses pure Damask rose oils
to impart radiance and nourishment to the
skin, followed by an intensive scalp, face
and décolleté massage, to complete this
treatment. For him, “His Highness” classic
gentleman’s facial, created for kings, roy-
ally addresses the skin care needs of a man,
providing a regal cleansing, exfoliation and
massage, resulting in a more handsome and
revitalized than ever, ‘courtly” look.
After a brief intermission in the Tea Room,
for a few ‘shots’ of chocolate, we opted for
a ‘couples’ massage and with the assistance
of our therapists, chose the Indian Tide
Massage (Abhyanga), a stirring rhythmic
massage based on holistic Ayurvedic ther-
apy; warm, herbal-infused oils are kneaded
into the muscles creating an emotional and
physical state of well-being. Falling into a to-
tal relaxation mode, we realized that enjoy-
ing this calm, rejuvenating experience could
be repeated more often…it’s only a short
three hour drive from Tampa! <Jupiter Beach Resort & Spa

> The Tampa Museum of Art is pleased to present 100 important
American paintings from The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C.
Founded in 1921 as America’s first museum of modern art, the Phil-
lips Collection is world renowned for its exceptional collection of mod-
ern American and European masterpieces. For this exhibition, curators
selected works from the 1850s through 1960s that showcase the full
breadth of its American art, featuring those exceptional artists who were
able to find their own voices and create work that was deeply personal
and expressed with fresh vision, yet connected to the great traditions of
the past and the present. Geniuses of American painting in the exhibition
include Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, Childe Hassam, Rockwell Kent,
Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Grandma Moses, Jacob Lawrence,
Jackson Pollock, Clyfford Still, and Mark Rothko.
To See as Artists See: American Art from The Phillips Collection, orga-
nized by The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., makes its final stop at
the Tampa Museum of Art after international stops in Madrid, Tokyo and
Rovereto, Italy, and most recently in Nashville and Fort Worth. The exhi-
bition returns home to The Phillips Collection for a special presentation
in 2014. Now until April 28th. <

66 :: HEALTH & BEAUTY
> We live in an age where twenty-four hours in a day is just not enough. Everyone is always on the run. Things need to happen fast, they need to be done yesterday and we pay for it with our health.
Some say the advance in technology will be the death of us, but we say otherwise. We have found a twenty-fifth hour and we want to share this secret with you.
There is an application for almost anything these days. We want to introduce you to the top three that will enhance your body, mind and soul. The result is a healthier body that diets smarter, sleeps better and is very ac-tive. Sound impossible? Fear not my friend, we have tested them out ourselves and it is very much possible. The quality of your sleep determines your performance during the day. Even sleeping eight hours a night does not mean that your body has fully recharged. Sleep Cycle, an ap-plication developed by Maciek Drejak, will record your sleep patterns and help you figure out a better sleeping habit.
Your body moves differently during the various cycles of sleep and the app recog-nizes this. The way it works is it uses the accelerometer in your iPhone to sense your movement while you’re sleeping to measure sleep quality. It also allows you to record
what you have done during the day and con-nects that information to the type of sleep quality you had. After using the application for a period of time you will adjust your be-haviors and mimic the days you experienced excellent sleep.
We noticed that a healthier diet during the day lead to better sleep during the night. Understanding the nutrition facts on the foods that you eat will lead to educated eating habits. Being aware of the content of the food you are about to introduce to your body will lead to smarter eating, and a healthier diet.
Lose It, a dieting app, will calculate the amount of calories you need to consume each day to maintain or lose weight. Ex-ceeding this calorie count will cause you to gain weight; rarely anyone wants that. This application contains a large database of foods with their nutrition facts, and if it’s not in there, just scan the barcode of the food item and voilà. It is food journal-
ing made simple. The way it works is that it gives you a daily budget of calories to lose weight. If you want to eat more, you have to exercise more to balance your calorie bud-get. And when you come across a food item that will eat up most of your calorie budget you will learn to make an educated decision not to consume it.
Wanting to burn more calories leads to more exercise and a healthier body. The most important muscle to exercise is your heart and what’s a better way to do it then running or cycling. Strava, a social fitness ap-plication, is our favorite exercise app. It re-cords your route, level of activity and time you spend running or cycling. It also allows you to share your results socially, which ignites competition within your circle of friends.
Our bodies are like machines. The more we take care of them the better and longer it will perform. Performing better during the day will create the illusion of a twenty-fifth hour. So download those apps and watch the twenty-fifth hour appear one minute at a time.<

> 1. Stay Tip-Top All Year. The stan-dard restaurant tip is still 15% to 20% of your pre-tax bill (if you’re dissatisfied with your server, leave 15% anyway and tell the manager why you weren’t happy.) But other service providers should get a little extra, too. For taxi drivers, figure 10% to 15%, depending on whether they help you with your bags. Valet-parking attendants should get a buck or two once they return your car-unscathed. Hair stylists and massage therapists should pick up an extra 15% to 20% per visit-with the exception of the owner, whose pride would be offended, says etiquette maven Judith Martin (also known as Miss Manners).
Be generous with people who provide you with good
service all year long. But don’t fall for the tip jar.

2. Don’t Let a Tip Jar Send You on a Guilt Trip. You see a tip jar at your lo-cal coffeehouse or sandwich joint and you suddenly feel like Hamlet: To tip or not to tip? Unless you get great service, there is no need to tip the barista at Starbucks. If there’s a jar at the carwash and the crew gives your ride a little extra TLC, consider leaving something. But don’t feel obligated. “It’s up to you whether you want to throw some change in the jar,” says Lizzie Post, great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post. “If you’re a regular customer, tip on occasion.”

3. It Gets Tricky When You Travel. Skycaps at U.S. airports get $1 per bag. Cabin stewards on a cruise ship leaving from a U.S. port usually get $3 a day (but look online to see whether service is included). Once you arrive overseas, check your guidebook to see what the local custom is. In Western Europe, you generally leave a nominal tip if you really liked the food and service, to say “thank you” and to show appreciation at a restaurant, or you don’t need to tip at all. Usually the tip (or service charge) is already calculated in the price. If not, consider leav-ing about 10% in an upscale restaurant. At a pub in the U.K., instead of tipping the bar-tender, you might offer to buy him a drink. In Denmark, you’re not expected to tip servers or taxi drivers, says fashion designer Kate Spade in her book Manners (Simon & Schuster). And if you ever make it to Ice-land, Spade writes, don’t even think about tipping a waiter. It’s considered rude.
4. Maybe Give a Little More this Year. Yes, tipping is discretionary. But the recession has changed the rules. Consider opening your wallet a little wider now, es-pecially if you experience superior service. Why? The workers you tip are at the low end of the pay scale. “Everyone’s watching his or her pennies, but these people need tips even more,” says Lydia Ramsey, busi-ness-etiquette expert and author of Man-ners That Sell: Adding the Polish That Builds Profits.
5.‘Tis the Season. Just about anyone who serves you during the year should get a token of appreciation. The norm for your nanny and house cleaner is a week’s pay. Your mail carrier is not allowed to accept cash, but you can give him or her a gift val-ued at $20 or less. Your newspaper carrier, trash collector and UPS driver should get 20 to 25 bucks. Appropriate gifts for hair stylists (whether they own the shop or not) include the cash equivalent of one ap-pointment or a nice bottle of bubbly. If you have kids in school, don’t give the teacher cash–it could be construed as a bribe. Sug-gest that all of the parents chip in for a gift certificate. <

74 :: COCKTAIL HOUR
> The after dinner cocktail has been a staple in our society for quite some time now. For some a night out on the town with friends and a good meal is required to end in a libation at the bar. Everyone has their preferred choice when it comes to their fi-nal cocktail almost to the point of it being a religious act.
There are more than a few choices to make when you get up from the table after a big meal and head towards the bar for the ever important, after dinner cocktail. Whether you call it a nightcap or a digestive, before you order I suggest you ask yourself a few questions to help you with the selection. Did you go all out, gastronomically speaking, and are in need of something to settle your stomach? Are you looking for that alterna-tive to dessert in the glass rather than the plate? Or are you looking to find that per-fect nightcap for that perfect evening? I have a few things for you to ponder regardless of which poison you decide to pick.
For a lot of us who indulge our devilish gas-tronomy side the after dinner drink will be in the form of a digestive. Usually a beverage made with plenty of herbs and spices. These are generally regarded to settle your stom-ach. The digestivo, the term used in Italy for centuries, was based on herbal medicines that were consumed in liquid form to help with exactly what you are thinking. Now the history of this is absolutely fascinat-ing but that is for another time. In modern times there are some great Italian liquors to choose from. I recommend an amaro, bit-ter spirit, such as Fernet Branca or Averna. These can be poured at room temperature and sipped on or like some prefer, chilled as a shot. There are plenty of digestives behind every restaurant bar you end up at so just ask your local bartender. There are other choices all over the world and each country will have their version of digestive aiding liquor. I just lean towards the Italians because, well it is just what I prefer. Look to the Greeks as well, they have a bevy of choices from Metaxa to Grappa.
If you were able to get thru dinner with-out the need of the tummy settling elixirs and prefer the dessert option behind the bar there are some great choices to de-cide from. Sticking with Italy I would lean
towards a great Limoncello. If you are fortu-nate to find one that is made in-house stop your decision-making and order it chilled. There are many nut liquors to choose from as well, some cream based some not. These selections, like Baileys or Frangelico, will definitely take care of that sugary rush you need. It is always a good idea to take a look at the port and sherry list to satisfy the sweet tooth in liquid form. Ruby ports are typically on the sweeter side so I lean towards a nice tawny port or a vintage port more often than not. The combinations are endless and you will no doubt walk away perfectly sated.
For those who are looking for that per-fect nightcap after a great evening let’s talk whiskey. Now I know we all have our fa-vorites between small batch bourbons or single malt whisky so we will just scratch the surface a little. For those who want to think outside the box a little I recommend looking for exactly that. Compass Box is a brand that is not afraid to play with your mind as far as your idea about whisky. If you want something a little different and a little smoother try the Compass Box Orange-rie with a cube of ice or two. It is a blend of Scotch whisky and hand-peeled zest of Navalino oranges, as well as cassia bark and cloves. Now while a great bourbon or whisky is a good choice for a nightcap, the Orangerie is just a great way to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. You can even say it is taking out two birds with one stone as it does have some diges-tivo tendencies.
I hope this helps the decisions one must make when picking out that perfect after dinner drink. Just remember to think about which way you are leaning after a big meal. Do I need to keep the stomach growling monsters at bay? Is it that human need for sweetness that needs to be quelled? Or are you just looking for that perfect sipper to cap the night? Either way there are obvious-ly more options to choose from than you saw here. It is merely a guideline to making the correct choice for what you need to walk away with one final thought, “Now that is how you end a meal.”<

If you are registering as an individual, you will select your day to race and your preferred wave time. Waves are released every half hour starting at 9 am. If you are register-ing as a group, only the team captain will select your day to race and wave time. You will be emailed your as-signed wave time at least one week prior to the event.
After you finish the course, grab a beer, some food and check out the vendors. The vendors will be giving away and selling cool swag. Enjoy the music and party-like atmosphere. Stick around to play some mud vol-leyball in the courts. Be sure to check out the Mud Crusade gear tent to pick up some t-shirts and other memorabilia.

QR-IOUS?Most simply put, QR codes are 2D codes which can be scanned using a smart phone to access information or take some sort of digital action. Tampa Style Magazine’s Concierge Guide created QR codes which links to our city guide, so that when you scan the code with your phone, you can view the guide pages, which include restaurants, golf, nightlife, fine hotels, etc., instantly finding them with the directions provided.
1) Scan with your Smart Phone and choose your city.
3) Choose your interest. Example: “Dining”
4) Make a reservation.
5) Get directions. Register your business here!
TheConciergeGuide.com
HOW TO SCAN PROPERLY:
1) FOCUS THE CODEIt is important to bring the code into perfect fo-cus. To help, we enabled a “tap to focus” feature. Also, varying distances and holding still can help achieve the right focus.
2) HOLD THE DEVICE STILLDo your best to keep steady and hold the device still. This enables the code to come into perfect focus.
3) TRY A VARIETY OF DISTANCESIt is important to bring the code into perfect focus. Depending on your device’s camera, this happens at different distances and sizes. Try mov-ing your device closer and further away to find the best point of focus for the code.
4) GOOD LIGHTINGCodes are easiest to scan in good lighting at high contrast. Test out different lighting where the code is most visible with no glares or shadows over the code.
